  • The Rocca Albornoziana is a fortress overlooking the city of Spoleto. This is the main bulwark of the system of fortifications built by Pope Innocent VI, to militarily strengthen and make more evident the authority of the Church in the territories of central Italy, in view of the now imminent return of the papal see to Rome after the seventies. about years of stay in Avignon. The construction works took place between 1363 and 1367, and were chaired by the Spanish cardinal Egidio Albornoz, under the direction of the Gubbio architect Matteo Gattaponi. The structure of the rectangular perimeter, in fact, with four corner towers, is divided into two spaces separated by a median body connected to two other towers: the Courtyard of the weapons, which occupies the area intended for the troops, and the Courtyard of Honor surrounded from buildings intended for the governors of the city, but in which many popes also stayed, including Boniface IX in 1392 and Niccolò V in 1449 during the plague of Rome, as well as Lucrezia Borgia on several occasions. This area, which also housed the administrative offices, is surrounded by a double loggia built, according to Vasari, on a project by Bernardo Rossellino, called to Spoleto by Pope Nicholas V. In the center of the courtyard there is a hexagonal well that surmounts a large cistern used to collect rainwater. The two courtyards are connected by a vault formed by arches frescoed between 1572 and 1575 on whose vault the coat of arms of Pope Gregory XIII is painted; on the sides are the representations of six cities of the Papal State: Porto d'Anzio, Perugia, Orvieto, Ripatransone, Spoleto and a last city not yet identified. Through the grand staircase you go up to the noble floor; from here a sixteenth-century stone door gives access to the largest area of the Rocca: the Hall of Honor. This room, which hosted banquets and great ceremonies, was never completed in the vaulted roof and in the pictorial decoration. The hall leads to the pint room, the room located inside the main tower, where the castellan stayed. Along the walls there are two pictorial cycles dated between the last decade of the fourteenth century and the first decades of the following century. From 1817 the fortress was used as a prison until 1982. After years of demanding restorations, in 2007 it was used as the permanent seat of the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto.

Beautiful drone work and fascinating detail of the "ancient" Papal and Cardinalatial coats of arms. And the birds sing so beautifully too. So much questionable restoration , Alas...! Just love your work Massimo...

The videography is magnificent! Each frame is a labour of love, captured with supreme sensitivity. Bravo, my friend! I had missed the Roca whilst in Spoleto due to severe time constraints and have remained curious about the same ever since ... this beautiful presentation has made my day! Umbria is a realm of mesmerising beauty, in no way inferior to neighbouring Toscana ... Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Spello, Todi, Perugia and Orvieto are forged out of tears and sighs ... O beloved land, the heart aches for you!
