Hey! Hope you enjoyed this Q&A :)) Join my Discord at this link: discord.gg/Hg2cMkaedH
You'll have to accept a few rules, but then you'll be smooth sailing. If you don't have a Discord account, it's super easy to set one up. It's going to be a lot of fun, I'm hoping we can all have lots of chats about transport, city planning and Sydney. I hope I see you there!
Also, if you wanna buy NIMBY Rails, you can buy it at this link: store.steampowered.com/app/1134710/NIMBY_Rails/. NIMBY Rails is a railway simulation game where you can build a railway system anywhere in the world. It's just $27 on Steam, and it's absolutely worth it; prepare to lose many hours playing the game.

Talgo's gauge changing rolling stock is probably a reference to the set ups in some parts of the world that allow a train to change its gauge during a revenue journey. Talgo is a particular brand of such rollingstock and facilities, but other engineering companies have created such systems. I believe they are most well-known in Spain, where some inter-city passenger trains actually change between gauges mid-journey. Basically the rollingstock is designed to interact with a mechanism built into the rail that modifies it's gauge as it rolls over it, converting a train between gauges on the fly.
As for why we don't use them here, simply put we don't need them.
For starters, we actually have a pretty comprehensive nation wide standard gauge network. All the capitals (and their key industrial terminals) are linked by standard gauge and a surprisingly large portion of Victoria's railway network has actually been converted to standard gauge already. This just leaves SA, WA and QLD as odd states out with narrow and broad gauge networks (Tas too but you weren't catching a train across the bass straight anyway). For the most part there isn't actually that much of the WA and SA networks still in use that aren't part of the standard gauge national network, so no major issues there. For QLD, the main issue would be an inability to run trains from the North Coast line onwards to NSW/VIC, but I think there is a real question on why you would need to in the first place? If we're talking about moving goods from Cairns/Townsville/Mackay to NSW/VIC, then container ships are a major competitor that rail will struggle to beat.
So then you have to consider, what break of gauge services are actually required? Most our bulk freight rail movements travel to ports in the same state the grain is grown in or the minerals are extracted from, so no need to worry about different gauges. Coal extracted in QLD travels a couple 100km east to a coastal QLD port and never comes remotely close to the standard gauge tracks of NSW. Any containerised freight that travels intra-state doesn't really care about gauge either. There might be an advantage to being able to directly move a container car from a local gauged train to standard gauge train for interstate transfer, but if you have to make that movement it's not that much more work to just use a crane to switch the container to the new train instead.
Likewise, any passenger service that doesn't cross state borders doesn't care about gauge. The ones that do are all standard gauge services using the national network. Even Vline services to Albury in NSW use standard gauge rollingstock now. It doesn't really matter that QLD, NSW and VIC use three different rail gauges when there is a standard gauge rail between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. If it doesn't already have a standard gauge rail link, odds are there isn't enough demand to justify the cost of implementing gauge changing tech to allow movements to and from that location.

Sharath to have more subscribers then the populations of all but 49 towns in Australia and a paragraph in the Sunday morning herald written about you shows how hard you’ve worked just to earn those subscription’s………..plus your videos are easy to watch and I live on the central coast I was wondering if you could do another video like the peats ridge road you made awhile back. Preferably one about rail transport on the central coast (if you get a train to wondabyne there’s a quarry next to it that quarried sandstone to be used in construction of the old railway bridge on the Hawkesbury river and quite a few buildings in Sydney cbd)

Congratulations, and well deserved. Your videos are great. By the way loved that you added a stop at Silverwater as one is very much needed in the area, the politicians just said that Silverwater was a jail and therefore did not need access to public transport, on the other hand you said Silverwater was just industrial. I beg to differ Silverwater is becoming and more and more suburban and is backed up to Newington (another suburb with little public transport), hence a stop in Silverwater would be greatly appreciated.
