  • I finally take the engine out of the bike and strip it right down to discover the root cause of the rattle. Turns out it was a very worn primary chain. Now I need to figure out what parts I'll try to install from the XJ750.

    Even though I'm not doing everything you did... These videos are still indispensable to me getting my new 82 xj650 running. Having never wrenched on a bike before, you're getting me through the hard parts better than any written manual

    Coming along nicely, really makes you wonder why the chain is so loose, awesome video, 👌🏼

      Yep, not sure yet. Will take a close look shortly. Seems odd given it only drives the alternator and drive to the starter motor...

      @@Mezzmoengineering You are right, this chain drives only alternator and starter. In my engine chain slider was broken and i have replaced it (the chain too). Check the oil nozzle (it lubricates primary chain) because loose chain could damage it.

    My engine was something around 50kg.....I tipped it sideways onto tyres....then dismantled the engine ....every bolt....going to rebuild...new bearings...bolts etc....my barrel was a nightmare to separate....it’s a 97

    Do you need to remove the head and jugs to split the case.
    I recently replaced the cylinder head gasket and base gasket at the jugs.
    Dont want to have to replace those parts again.
    Cost on gaskets.
    Can I replace the chain on my bike without pulling head and jugs again?

      Hi Mate, If you just want to get to the oil pump and transmission area only then the bottom case with come off with the top end all together.

    Hi there. Nice series you have here, and I stumbled into. I wonder, why aren't you just going to try to use the 750 engine? Boring a 650 to what, 690? 700? why not just use the 750 now that you know this one has some issues? And why YICS? I am working with a 550 vision and its one of the first things they recommend you remove, as how much it helps is debatable, and often another thing to leak and cause run issues. VS what YICS does is supposedly spread the gas atoms out for more thorough combustion. Not sure if that really gives more HP, though it might make the exhaust a bit cooler considering there will be less burning gas in the exhaust. Though the YICS system looks completely different on how it is set up on the 4 cyl. Best of luck!

      Hi Chris, welcome to the channel. Yes, I could just fit a 750, but that would be too easy, LOL. I have a complete 750 and my plan is to convert to YICS mainly because I think it looks better and it does appear to provide better economy. I'm going to keep the 650 casing etc, but install the 750 crank and bore out to 68mm or 820cc as well as use the 750 cams. I'm also going to lightly port the inlet and exhaust ports and then tune the carbs using different jets. To make YICS work I need to use the 750 barrels and head. Some 650's had YICS, I believe they developed that due to people complaining about fuel consumption on the first models.

    Did you have to taer down the top end to split the cases?

    • @Mezzmoengineering
      @Mezzmoengineering  4 года назад +1

      No, you can split the cases without touching the top end. BUT, you won't be able to remove the pistons or crank unless the top is removed. You can't get the primary chain out either without the head removed.
