Okay I just want to explain why I love this scene and see if you guys agree: 1) Grindelwald portrays himself to his followers as a freedom fighter, and I can totally see why people followed him because he’s a great villain, manipulative and charismatic (unlike Voldemort who ruled through fear) 2) the SOUNDTRACK omg 3) the blue fire spell (protego diabolica) is just AWESOME 4) how he uses his wand like he’s conducting the flames is just wow 5) the way Credence and Grindelwald hug is everything Voldemort wanted to seem like and closely mirrors the scene where he hugs Draco 6) the effects are amazing 7) this is kinda a tangent: can we talk about how Newt is holding his own against Grindelwald, who eats trained Aurors for breakfast, and he was expelled from Hogwarts and didn’t get to finish his education, because I feel like Newt doesn’t get enough credit for that

Maybe Grindelwald isn't as powerful as Voldemort in terms of magical ability and strength, but he is easily a much more skilled opponent than Voldemort, utilizing far more creative spells and abilities. Voldemort just likes to spam killing curses over and over again.

Dumbledore and Grindelwald are like two sides of the same coin. Very much alike but very different as well. They both could outclass Voldermort. They were perfect rivals. But Voldermort is hands down way more dangerous.

One is that Voldemort to an extent feared Dumbledore and two because he knew that Dumbledore wasn't an opponent that he could beat by overpowering him. So he conjured a fiery snake, directed thousands of shards of shattered glass and when that failed, he went for Harry. Dumbledore's weakness in that moment. All without the Elder Wand. Harry was an anomaly to Voldemort. Lily's protection charm shielded him until Goblet of Fire, their wands sharing a bond shielded Harry (why Voldemort attempts to use Lucius' wand), the Elder Wand rightfully belonging to Harry protected him and allowed Draco's wand to overpower it. By all accounts Voldemort should've been able to kill Harry with little difficulty using only the Killing Curse, he has personally faced far stronger and more talented aurors. Had he learned not to underestimate Harry's plot armour and used his own wand in the final duel then Voldemort, while Horcruxless, would've finally killed Harry and survived the Battle of Hogwarts. While we didn't see Voldemort do anything near as flashy as Protego Diabolica... That doesn't mean he didn't have the capacity to, and given the context, it makes sense why he didn't.

Geoff Roach Yeah, but Voldemort was a psychotic extreme egoist. Very few people could seriously want a person like that to succeed. Grindelwald is actually fighting for very noble principles higher than himself and is standing up to a broken establishment.
If they make another one (which is pretty unlikely) it's still possible to get him back. In fact if they're smart they'll hire all three actors who've played him, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Mads Mikkelsen. Those could be his three favorite forms to take and at the same time the audince would have a plausible ret-con as to why he's played by Mikkelsen in the 3rd movie. It sounds stupid but I think it would actually mend the disparity.

I will forever be sad watching the Fantastic Beasts movies. Johnny Depp was the PERFECT Grindelwald (for this age category/moment in Wizarding history). Jude Law and Johnny Depp were the perfect casting choices. Johnny literally made Grindelwald come to life!! From the little we know of him from HP books, I couldn't have imagined a better actor playing Grindelwald. Alas, I will at least be happy that we got to see him as Grindelwald in the second FB movie.

Grindelwald is absolutely right. Unless certain measures are taken magical blood will be diluted out of existence. I think magic users should have a country of their own to protect their existence as a unique people. There is not a single thing hateful about that. I love how it looks like Grindelwald is conducting music rather than killing loads of people. It's an art form to him, and it's beautiful how he expresses that. Depp really gave this role his all.

@Therese Davis Yes there is. The bomb and WW2 actually happened (we know it did). In the film's timeline it still hasn't (so for many of the characters it's still something to come). Grindelwald is using it to spread fear among wizards. He uses a horrific event to polarize society, blaming muggles and saying they could be dangerous for wizards too since they're able to cause mass destruction. His speech is no different in that regard to those of some totalitatian figures who have manipulated portions of society before.
A lot of this movie’s plot was everywhere to me but goddamn are the visuals very pleasing for this part of the movie. Also the teleportation scene with that Chinese fluorescent tiger beast.

She drew on him and he had no way of knowing what she was going to cast at him, I believe this would fall under justifiable self defence on the aurors part.

Yes it is a mixture of fiend-fire and firestorm that Dumbledore used in the half-blood prince to save Harry. Firsetorm kills everyone as instructed by the wizard and so is fiend fire. Fiend fire resembles dark magic while firestorm is a much more whiter version of it but causes the same damage.

Its so good to see the detailing that the moviemakers adhered to. If we look closely, Grindelwald uses the Elder Wand, and in the books, it is Grindelwald who is the predecessor of the wand before Dumbledore gets it.

If they make another one (which is pretty unlikely) it's still possible to get him back. In fact if they're smart they'll hire all three actors who've played him, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Mads Mikkelsen. Those could be his three favorite forms to take and at the same time the audince would have a plausible ret-con as to why he's played by Mikkelsen in the 3rd movie. It sounds stupid but I think it would actually mend the disparity.

Did people complain about it? Not really beyond some people who disliked the new Dumbledore. Drawing attention to it would only make it worse.
I will forever be sad watching the Fantastic Beasts movies. Johnny Depp was the PERFECT Grindelwald (for this age category/moment in Wizarding history). Jude Law and Johnny Depp were the perfect casting choices. Johnny literally made Grindelwald come to life!! From the little we know of him from HP books, I couldn't have imagined a better actor playing Grindelwald. Alas, I will at least be happy that we got to see him as Grindelwald in the second FB movie.

Johnny's scenes were the best part of this movie. He was the only reason I watched it. I didn't care for the rest of it. He's an amazing actor. It was stupid to let him go.
I was skeptical about Depp doing this role but OMG he absolutely owned the role and also the franchise despite only appearing in bits. As Grindelwald Depp managed to create the kind of impact that Ralph Fiennes wasn’t able to as Voldemort.
He's my favorite character in there, hands down. Him not being able to complete this series breaks my heart.

I love how it looks like Grindelwald is conducting music rather than killing loads of people. It's an art form to him, and it's beautiful how he expresses that. Depp really gave this role his all.

@Therese Davis Yes there is. The bomb and WW2 actually happened (we know it did). In the film's timeline it still hasn't (so for many of the characters it's still something to come). Grindelwald is using it to spread fear among wizards. He uses a horrific event to polarize society, blaming muggles and saying they could be dangerous for wizards too since they're able to cause mass destruction. His speech is no different in that regard to those of some totalitatian figures who have manipulated portions of society before.
A lot of this movie’s plot was everywhere to me but goddamn are the visuals very pleasing for this part of the movie. Also the teleportation scene with that Chinese fluorescent tiger beast.
Don't forget the score. And also some of the performances.

In all honesty the more movies come out, the more forgiving these curses seem to be. Are the books like this? Yes it is a mixture of fiend-fire and firestorm that Dumbledore used in the half-blood prince to save Harry. Firsetorm kills everyone as instructed by the wizard and so is fiend fire. Fiend fire resembles dark magic while firestorm is a much more whiter version of it but causes the same damage.

Its so good to see the detailing that the moviemakers adhered to. If we look closely, Grindelwald uses the Elder Wand, and in the books, it is Grindelwald who is the predecessor of the wand before Dumbledore gets it.
