This was the MOST intensive, actual sets, real-live production in the history of games at the time of its release and a record it may still hold. The second place one? WC III! :)
Still, as of 2002, the most expensive computer game ever. Produced for a cost of roughly 10 million dollars (imdb.com)

Randall Watson Jason Bernard passed away shortly after the filming of the movie, "Liar Liar." He played as the judge. There's a memorandum to him in the post credits in that movie. I agree with you. He played a great character & his acting was stellar, very touching at times. His passing was a huge loss.

There are some games that will always have a special place in your heart. For me those are the Gabriel Knight games, most Bioware games and Wing Commander III and IV.
It had such an incredible production-value for that time, the acting was top notch, the story was great, intrestring characters and it had enjoyable gameplay to boot. At the time I was just awed by the freedom of choice the game seemed to give you in which way the story would progress. Only in my second playthrough I noticed my choices didn't matter that much. It was and is an absolute classic and I really would love to play a game in this genre with this quality of storytelling again. Does anybody have a suggestion (preferably on a gameconsole)? Never been able to find anything this good again.

I would say that this is the definitive Wing Commander game, and yes, in a way it most certainly is. However, due to the fact that it references a lot of things from the previous game, I can't really call it that as it picks up the narrative from the previous game and is barely a self-contained story.
The plot takes an unexpected turn and the Kilrathi are barely seen in this one, so if you are new to the franchise and want a more accurate representation of Wing Commander as a whole, you are better off playing Heart of the Tiger instead (Wing Commander III). That one gives a more in-depth look at the core Wing Commander-setting and has a more cut-and-dry story about the evil Kilrathi and you as a hero trying to save the human race. However, in terms of story quality, scriptwriting, character development, action, suspense, graphics, music and almost everything else (along with a superior budget), Wing Commander IV improves on the experience immensely and it is, without a doubt, the BEST Wing Commander game of all time, if not the most representative.
Make no mistake, as good as WC3 is, WC4 is even better. WC4 takes the characters that you love from the third game (the core cast anyway) and make you love them even more here. The intricate plot, the drama, the pacing, the branching choices... its all perfected here and will leave you remembering the game for years to come.
