    What am I doing wrong?? Bought a measuring tape at Joanns, my waist measurement says that I'm a 36, but my perfect pair of jeans Levis/Madewell are 28... what's wrong why is the size soooo off, I've tried wearing the size my waist says but those jeans are super large on me.

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  5 лет назад +4

      This is such a good question and it's for a number of reasons. Firstly vanity sizing, garment sizing is not very accurate these days, companies want us to buy their products so that they make us feel good by making garments larger and keeping the size the same! I also wonder how this differs from European sizing to USA sizing for example a US 8 is a UK 12, I don't know whether this happens in denim sizing too?
      I actually have a funny story about a customer who came to an in-person class with me. Made a skirt and then called me complaining; she said that I took her measurements wrong because she always buys X size in the shop and her 'real measurements' were bigger than this! I offered for her to come back and I would re-measure her, she was seriously shocked that the measurements I took were accurate, her words "I didn't realise I had put on weight, I have always worn the same size!'
      Vanity sizing is a big issue and you will find this changes from brand to brand; one store you might be a 26, another a 28 and another one a 30! It will also depend on the cut of the jeans, if the jeans sit lower than you waist then it might be that you need to buy this smaller size for the jeans to fit your hips (high hip and low hip). You may simply have a straighter figure through the waist, than what the 'fit model' they designed the jeans for has. Does that make sense?
      Another aspect is the stretch of jeans. Obviously different denim has a different proportion of stretch and again you will find this differs between cut (style) and brand.
      Sorry this turned into an essay, but I hope it helped? Basically you aren't doing anything wrong! Aneka x

      @@amaraezionye6739 When you measure your smallest part are you measuring your waist? Or are you measuring too high up? Hi, thank you for the video. I have a Q about measuring bust-size etc for a pre-made coat. If the coat is a size 32" bust, has that taken into account that the wearer will probably have layers of clothing on underneath? I'm not sure if, when measured in just a bra and tight-fitting shirt at 32", if I should ADD an inch or 2 to allow for wearing thicker layers underneath the coat.

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  4 года назад +1

      If the coat you are buying is suitable for a 32" bust they will have include the ease (difference between body measurement and garment size) into this figure; as well as the idea that you will be wearing other layers under the coat. Aneka

    PLEASE 🙏 PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND!!!!
    Im very confused about the waistline. What if ur fat with a big round belly. Do u measure the biggest part of ur stomach? Or still do waist line? Also u confused me because u said make sure the tape measure is straight. But u also said put it above the belly button. If i put above belly button, id have to lower the front a little. Also is measuring different for fat people? Because sometimes our fat makes us uneven in normal places. And the waist is definitely smaller but we need to be able to get our clothes OVER THE FAT PARTS FIRST before getting to the smaller waist etc. So for us should we waist measure where the stomach tire 🛞 begins, like slightly beneath that smaller waist size? Or do we still measure the small part and hope that high waisted bottom can get over that bulge first???

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  Год назад +1

      Happy to help.
      1. Depending on your shape you can measure the true waist. This would be where you bend at the side. OR you can measure where the waist looks better on the individual you are measuring. They may want it higher if they have a larger stomach.
      When drafting on an individual with a larger stomach I might measure both the true waist and the flattering waist.
      2. Larger individuals (fuller figures, plus sizes) can have a slanted waist. Lower at the front and higher at the back. That’s ok.
      3. Belly button is very much a standard mark. I would aim for the bend at the side seam. This works better on individuals with a stomach.
      4. In terms of fitting clothes over the fuller abdomen. It depends what you are making. Usually I would measure the true waist, High Hip and Low Hip. If the abdomen was larger than the Low Hip I would use this figure for drafting the Low Hip. So that the garment doesn’t come in again lower down and accentuate the fuller abdomen.
      I would record both true waist and fuller abdomen so that you can mark them on the pattern and achieve a good and flattering fit.
      I hope that helps?

    Not all jeans are made for where the actual waist line is. So its kind of tricky with this. How do we know :-/

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  2 года назад +1

      Usually although the jeans are cut for the waist they will still use the waist measurement as the sizing. If you look at finished garment measurements of the jeans (some retailers will tell you this). You’ll see that a 26” waist pair of jeans might be 30” around the waistband if it is designed to sit lower.

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  7 лет назад +5

      Pleasure Alisha, sorry I didn't cover the shoulder in the tutorial. For an accurate shoulder measurement you will want to measure from where the neck meets the shoulder (where you would wear a necklace). To the end of the shoulder. This isn't the end of the shoulder but if you follow your collar bone out to the shoulder there is a bone at the end, this should be in line with your armpit. That is where you measure the end of the shoulder. Does that make sense? Aneka :-))
