I remember when 1 GB of RAM was plenty of RAM back in 2004 or 2005. However, by 2007, 1 GB of RAM really started to not be enough and PCs with 2GB to 4 GB of RAM started to become common, especially when Windows Vista was released.

Thank god i got a new laptop with an i5 11400h about a year ago. Anyways what is your experience with Terraria and how much have you played it? Also, are you thinking of testing it on very bad systems in the future?

    • @alexg9601

Terraria is quite a bit RAM and CPU hungry since it has the entire world loaded at all times, as far as graphics go I don't know for sure why but the lighting engine is somewhat taxing when you set it to white or color, the backdrops and the parallax effect on them also packs quite a punch, it isn't by any means a "demanding" game, you are perfectly able to play it on 4GB RAM and a Celeron (a "modern" Celeron that is), but it isn't as easy to run as it would look, i know for a fact Terraria does NOT like iGPUs, but something as low end as an RX550 should handle it pretty well

Like pentium/celeron processors from before 2004, or so (cant recall the exact specs). They had 256mb ddr1! And we had to run simulation programs, like designsoft tina 8, or pcb programs like sprint layout. It was horrible. Later inended up getting some 256mb sticks of ddr1, and i brought one with me to the lab every time, and install it to the pc i used that day. Like windows xp 32 bit did stop lagging when typed in notepad xdd. A year later i got my dads old laptop with pentium t3200 and 4 gb of ddr2 for school. It made a huge difference!

    Here's the thing...
while I have no recent experience with gaming with 1GB of RAM, I have with 2GB. I don't often do computer related videos, rarely is more likely, but I got to extensively test a Celeron based laptop with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of RAM to the point I made this video which blew me away with the results. I tested over 70 games (about 50 in the video) and the difference between 2GB of RAM and 8GB of RAM was for the most part not what I was expected. For many games the performance was WORSE with the 8GB, some games wouldn't even run, where for most games the performance was too similar to matter either way. Mind you I am talking about a laptop without dedicated GPU and a much weaker CPU than the i5 you tested here.
ANYWAY, thanks for the fun video as always. Thankfully your videos are never boring.

    Sitting at 32GB today.

One thing we should look for is that the PC uses your SSD as a alternative source of RAM. It works worse than normal ram, but it happens to not stutter the apps.

During 2011 I remember playing Left 4 Dead 1 with Athlon II X2 250 with 1GB RAM, I do not have GPU back then and I think the GPU is intact with the Emaxx MCP61D3-ICAFE motherboard. It loads slow as hell and I thought my PC has no hope in gaming, then my sister's husband gave me something (a 4GB RAM) and said it should help improving my PC performance. He took off the side panel and installed the RAM to he motherboard. It was my first time seeing the components inside a PC and then we booted up the PC, I was surprised of the improvements when it boots in Windows XP. I didn't know back then that PCs are upgradeable and discovering it was like magic for me, framerate are still stuttery but it loads everything much better. A year later, I asked my mom to buy a GT610 for it and I enjoyed playing video games with it. That PC even survived until the year 2020 after buying a new PC, then it finally stopped working. The last game I played with it was PUBG Lite running on 20FPS. I think that PC was just waiting to be replaced and it served me for good 10 years. I also recorded some games I played on it and posted it on my channel :)

Just stepped into a time machine, came out, 30 years later than 1992. First, I thought you mean 1MB of ram, then I learned that knowledge is all over the so called "internet" and looked up GB. 1 Gigabyte equals 1000mb or ram. My 386 SX 20mhz just has 2mb. Really insane! Btw, why do all people look at this strange flat rectangle when walking outside? What do they talk into this and for what?

Imagine the hell developers went through as recently as 2015 when some game companies still required them to port their games to the PS3 and 360. Which both had only had half a gigabyte of Ram (256MB system+ 256MB VRAM on PS3, and 512MB unified on 360). And a tiny portion of it was reserved for the OS... And their was no SSD virtual memory to assist, since they used sata 1 hard drives.

their operating systems were so light compared to a pc that it was not necessarily mandatory and then their processor played the biggest role in all this
then why talk about an operating system for these consoles, it's barely the cache memory size of a processor between 16 and 256mb XD while windows 10 takes 3gb in 64bits and windows 11 takes 2.5gb in 64bits
