Great video Chris! Thanks for sharing the paint info tools at Wolfsburg, Samba and paint ref. Hey where do you choose to buy your headlight assemblies for 66 and earlier? Thanks!
Yeah I usually go with wolfsburgwest if I buy them outright, but many times I restore them myself.
That 61' is an absolutely gorgeous car! Love it!
Thank you.
Silver Granite. OMG. The job done laying and clearing that color is spectacular! That application and color is worth every cent paid.
Thank you!
Thank you for making all these videos. My 12 year old boys and I are working on a 57 rag. We love watching your vids !!!
Very cool, thank you!
Happy Thanksgiving Chris.Thank you for sharing all your knowledge to us VW Ohana (Family).Mahalo(Thank you) from Hawaii 🤙
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving to you too.
I think the bugs look way better without the clear coats.
That said in a climate like here in Ireland with 100 days of rain a year I don't blame people going for the extra rust protection and less sun fading the paint.
My 78' is in Agave green L240/Black interior. That is what sold the car tot me! Love this color... One hell of a Fantasy shop you have Chris!!
Thank you very much!
Remember my flat black ragtop beetle? Yeah it's still flat black. Eventually I'll get it repainted. Great tips. Thanks for sharing.
Hell yeah man.

I painted a '57 for a friend that was white. We popped the door panel and we were shocked to see gun metal metallic. Did not know they did metallics in those days. Paint shop had the chart and it was anthracite. We used that color in Imron. This was 1985. Mine will soon be back to original L-87 Pearl white. Red interior. Cheers!
Nice.
This is an awesome video Chris. Only problem is that I now don't like the Fontana Grey that I was about to choose for my 67, as much as I use to. lol
I think the tricky thing is when you live in San Francisco, some days are sunny, some days are overcast, so certain colors look very different on various days.
I have a 1972 Super Beetle in Marina Blue. It really needs to be completely sprayed as it set in a carport for 21 years.
Great information.
I have a 64 crank sunroof bug, total original parts but needs a complete restoration. I am going to restore back to original condition and with the information I'm finding on you site it's making research a whole lot easier. Many thanks and keep up the fantastic work.
Your bugs are absolutely outstanding.
Thanks so much!
Great thoughts and appreciate your flexibility towards color and years. I love the bourdeu red it deserves to be on more than one year only. Promise that car will show up in a shop tour or a how to video before it leaves the shop. You aren't the only one who gets attached to the cars in your shop!
I hate going against you....but that silver with the all blue interior looks damn good 😁
I absolutely love that Bordeaux
You had something similar to this before and EVER since, I've been looking at car colors on newer cars, VW,, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc...like Rainmain....and even though I have not met you yet, I look at the paint color and wonder what Chris Vallone is doing ! LOL. Doesn't help that I am colorblind either....Happy Thanksgiving !
Haha, very cool man, that's hilarious
Chris, great info. This helps me on deciding what colors to restore my newly acquired 74 VW Super Beetle Convertible here in AZ. It was originally a CO car, but moved to CA in 2006, where it sat for 14 years. Thanks!
Thanks I did email you before I decided what color to paint my 59 bug. I went with glacier blue. Thanks for all your videos
Oh nice, thats a great color.
Color indeed counts! When it comes to my VW’s Color me Yellow!
Hi Chris, another awesome video.
You almost tempt me to take on another resto. 2 down but now "retired" I am not sure I could justify the cost. But I keep encouraging the younger members of our club to follow your amazing insights.
Cheers, Carl
Ah very cool Carl. We gotta keep the youth in this! =o) Happy Thanksgiving.
I forgot to say there is a cool website where you can build a mock up of the color and style of bug it's called select a bug dot com if I remember correctly, there may be a Ghia and Bus version also worth looking into. I have a marinablau late standard bug and went with earlier style 2tone black and white on the 4 lug wheels. I might go with a grey, orange or hot rod red for fun look wheels next time!
Thanks for the info, gonna check that out.
I can't seem to find that website. Any ideas?
Great tips. Thanks!
No problem!
Do you ever work on any Type 3s? I had a '68 Squareback in college. It was a later model with fuel injection. Light blue with black interior, but had been poorly resprayed in a darker blue. It was a complete death trap with the suspension and brake lines all rusted out (Ohio rust belt car). Took me all of one summer to fix that stuff. Always ran well (I put a header exhaust on it bypassing the rotted heater boxes), but I was afraid to take it on the highway. That was thirty-five years ago and looking back, I wish I had kept it.
I dont actually. Funny I knew a Jeff Becker in High School.
Do you Chris have a modern paintcode for that L322 Silver Granite color? That is currently in the top three for my -63 bug restoration.
Yes, it is a Subaru color 25L
@@classicvwbugs thank you very much!
Enjoyed your video. What is the paint name for the blue at the 22 minute mark? You talked about bending the paper sample to see the colors in natural light. I had a Super Beetle that was that color. I really like the color but am never confident that I've found the color name or code when I go looking at websites like the ones you mentioned. I'm building a '65 Beetle I've had for twenty years. I might use that blue on the '65. The older car with the blue from the Super. Thanks.
I think I answered my own question: Gemini Blue (L96E)?
@@joeaverager Nah I think that is glacier blue from 1958.
@@VallonesRCHobby I think the color sample with the paint stick still intact is glacier blue. I think the second sample he picks up with the shortened paint stick is Gemini blue. Gemini is more blue, and glacier blue is more silvery, lighter blue.
I've got a '67 beetle. Original Zenith Blue is on the inside with a terrible paint on outside 😅 I'd like to re-paint Zenith Blue exterior. Any ideas on what would go for the interior? Black is the original but any other ideas 🙏🏻
Touch color, you can try some grey or off-white, or like a grey/beige.
Hello Chris, can you tell me where to find these shuttlecock center for steering wheel from the 60s example 64 65.
Looking forward to your response.
Best regards.
Lionel
Chris, thank you for doing these videos. I know they take time away from your shop. May I ask what color is the blue sample you have sprayed out that you use as an example of folding the spray card to see how the color changes. That is very close to my ‘61 ragtop and I need a new paint job. Thank you!!

Did you do a video on this one....i need to she her from each side 😊
Chris, where did you pick up that book to color match? Im trying to find a modern color for bahama blue L519
Check with your local body shop, they have a bunch.
Thanks for tips! I have a suggestion. I would like to see vids of you going through the classified sections of The Samba, Buses and Bugs, Ebay etc. Tell us what you think are reasonable prices for viable beetles and worth sending an actual agent there to inspect the car. Give it a think. I think it could be your most popular of vids.
thats a great video Idea my friend! I will look into doing that.
Thanks for the insight Chris these videos have been awesome especially since I’m new to this world of vintage beetles. I do want to ask how you feel about beetles that are painted 2 colors? Personally I love them and I plan on painting my 66 that way with a light beige almost off-white on the sides and a near mint green as the main body color. I will do more thought on the interior however to keep in the budget I’m probably going to go with a beige leather we have stored here for the seats.
I do not mind them on convertibles, not crazy about them on sedans. They were only common on the early split window beetle convertibles and hebmullers.
Hey Chris this video i seen the back seat pillows, who does thoses? 🙂
Sewfine
kool key rings are they online ?
Désolé j’avais pas fait attention, KerfaLab merci
I got my hopes up....ran over to thesamba.com.....no ppg paint code for Bordeaux red smh.....just the same L51 that my paint guy says "no go".....come on chris....let me get that formula 😊
I do have it, but you just got me on vacation this week, I have the code on my work computer. So hit me up next week on the 22nd.
@@classicvwbugs will do!!!
What is the code for the silver granite of the convertible shown? It’s not on the samba…
If you go to wolfsburgwest.com and go to color charts, it is there under 1954 convertible.
27:05 mouth watering 😋
Wow some amazing looking car's.Have a good Thanksgiving.....
Thank you, you too.
Hey brother, hope all is good with you...i purchased the 1970 auto stick bug ...its awesome...thank you for this info my friend,I checked the info u mentioned for my color and it turns out correct color...vw cobalt blue...so now my question is...how can I tell if my engine is the original motor...i ck'd out another video of yours and the engine # is correct for 1970...1600 single port....but don't know if it's factory to my car...help please and thank u so much,as always you rock!!! DT
Yeah brother you an do a cross reference on thesamba.com website, if it falls within a month or so of the date of your bug, good chance it is the original engine.
@@classicvwbugs thank you brother,you're the bestest!!!😁
@@darryltaztaylor7434 Nah you are!
@@classicvwbugs brother, you're the best! I have the original motor as well as paint...im ecstatic!!!! Thanks again my brother, you are AWESOME😁
@@darryltaztaylor7434 You are welcome. Any questions, give me a shout anytime, you can even call me.
Chris have you ever got a colour wrong?
Hi from DC ❤ ✌ 💙. Thx a lot. Very interesting. Actually I'm in luv with my ivory convertible NB 2007 ! I'm literally in luv. It's much more than a car : it's an Art of Life ! I mean it . Definitely 👍👍👍
Hey Chris! Do you know where I can find the pillows you have on the rear seats?
When I order my upholstery from Sewfine in Colorado, she sews a set up for me.
Happy thanksgiving day my volky brother and family
Same to you my friend!
First.
Now, on to select my favorite color on my broke brain.
I am retired and if I lived near you I would work for free to hang around your shop and help. My 66 is Sea Blue and I have found that there are no two matching Sea Blue re-paints out there that I have seen. Paint matching by computer scan does not even get a perfect match.
exactly. You ever in the area, please stop by. =o)
Hey, what specific color is the grey convertible?
Silver granite? I don't see that listed in the Beetle Paint code listing
found it!!!!
@@csengel Could you link me to where you found the Silver granite code?
Just Got a 1968 beetle while in the Marine Corps and i’m trying to get it in good conditions #ClassicGiveaway
👍
Used to work at a body shop in San Diego about 14 ago years and use glasurit paint . I was a painter helper and did some digging around in the computer for paint codes and found the original interior White for VW paint and painted the gear shifter, it a perfect match to the paint color under the seat upholstery. After seeing your video today I thought that it might be a good cross reference that painters might be able to use to locate original paint codes for vw's for US ... I found that you could go on to glasurit Website and search through their database coloronline.glasurit.com/CCC/html/index.php, and again thanks for the informative video
Wow that is excellent! Very good info, thank you.
repeat after me. Folksvagen. that is the real pronuciation.
Chris, are those custom interiors or kits?
Both, the kits can be bought through me, "Vallone package"
@@classicvwbugs Can you send along a link to those kits? Thx!
