    The fact that you even have to say this boggles my mind. I hate when people think they are entitled to the property of someone else. It’s disgusting

    Your content videos have made an impact on how i buy patterns. I've come across some sites that are clearly filled with stolen content.
    I enjoy knowing I'm buying directly from the designer far more. I used to only search out free patterns, but i thank you for making me more aware of where I'm getting them from.

    The first video of yours I ever watched was a content theft video. I subscribed immediately, because not much angers me more than content theft and copyright infringement. Thanks for everything you do 💜

    I agree 110% with you. It also drives me nuts when someone comes up with a really neat and unique design and people will immediately come out with nearly the same pattern without permission and have it for free on their RUclips channel. You have to do it right. I did a tutorial on the granny square cocoon cardigan and worked with the original designer even though mine had several variations. I got her blessing and kept her in the loop. I never claimed copy write or that is was my own pattern...just a variation of hers done with her blessing and permission.

    we know Marly, we love Marly, Marly teaches us stuff... she has funny stories and is very charming.....
    who designed "The Child" at Disney?
    who knows.... also.... Disney held back and held back and held back getting the toys out there.... that leaves a vacuum, the Arigurumi thing is getting more and more popular, in that i am seeing tons of people doing it and there are kits in stores... so The Child was a perfect storm.... some faceless designer at a megacorp known for buying properties, many of which are public domain, and monetizing them.... when it comes to copyright laws.... the repressive copyright laws we have now are pretty much 100% thanks to that mouse... Disney will NEVER let that mouse go into the public domain, so copyright protection will become indefinite...
    now, i'm a photographer, i've had my work stolen uncountable times... back in the early 00's i had one image go viral, it was all over live journal and myspace, the social media platforms of the time. i sent countless DMCA takedown notices, i drove myself half crazy trying to chase this image down because it was EVERYWHERE.... and my contract with one of the models in the photos was that any use of her image had to have a credit to her attached.... so people were stealing my work, and putting me in jeopardy for breaching a contract...
    not a justification for what happened, but just an explanation of how it could've happened, and why *i* feel the two instances found different responses...
    i would have less of an issue with patterns of The Child being released for free than people selling them.....
    it's someone's interpretation of The Child, most of them look derpy.... it's not like they're taking molds from original pieces and selling direct copies...

    Hi dear I loved the title of your video..we all suffering to very devastating level from content theft everyday, everyone in his field.
    I wanted to draw attention to downloading RUclips videos by some software though,why it is to be delt with differently, it's cause the videos are long and not everywhere the megas package is affordable so sometimes it is better to download the clips, there are people uploading those clips in their channels I guess it is impolite but it is good for the name of who made the video..imagine your instructions are seen in refugee camp or India or Africa.. You ll be more famous..the videos should hold your name always that is not difficult..
    And it preserves your channel from trolls..God they are ugly..Do you agree with this?

    I teach 7th graders and I have to explain this in regards to writing content every year. They think that if they copy it from the internet and change a few words, it's all good. Basically, the concept of stealing other people's work starts young. Not every student does it, but enough of them do that I deal with it every year. I love it when they tell me their elementary school teachers said it was okay to do. Their parents often concur that it was okay to do before. It's never okay. People get fired, get kicked out of universities, or pay fines for doing this. Unfortunately it's a pretty entrenched behavior and it's sad.

      I am a homeschooler. I have even seen curriculum suggesting to do it with no citing the source. Boggles my mind. Granted my oldest is in 6th grade, but I have always told them to cite the source. I don't care if its words, sats, pics, memes etc! Cite the source!

    Totally agree with you. One thing baffles my mind though and sort of on the same subject, is how does anyone designers pattern be original. There is only so much you can do with a knitted or crochet beanie yet there are thousands of patterns out there. They all look the same. The granny square is patterned out by thousands of designers. What makes ones design original. They are all piggy backing onto someone else's ideas. Unless you are a Steven West or someone of his caliber you shouldn't call yourself a designer. You are someone who just tweaks a pattern. There are very few original ideas out there, can't be helped as thousands are doing the same...just spinning off someone elses ideas. Oh well. What happened to Marly was totally reprehensible.. Always enjoy your candid thoughts.

    Excellent video on content theft once again. I always enjoy your analogies bringing it home to those who choose to not comprehend the magnitude of this issue. I was shocked when you shared there are people all up in arms over the Marly Bird situation yet called out Disney over exercising their Rights under the law. Seriously I am shaking my head for real over that concept. Content theft is never right and I support only Designers that go about doing things the right, ethical, legal manner, period. Thanks for all you do, Steph!

    I love that you made this video. I understand your frustration and confusion. I think that this type of situation exists because our culture has accepted the lie that truth is what you believe it to be - that is that there is no standard for what is right and wrong except what each individual believes it to be (situational ethics). And, while I realize that many will be offended by it, it always comes back to our basic world view. If we believe in the God of the Bible, then we believe that what is written in the Bible is the inspired word of God and that it is true. Thus, we believe that what God says is wrong is always wrong - no matter how we or anybody else feels about it or what anybody thinks about it. We have to have absolutes. Theft is theft no matter the situation and no matter what anybody else thinks about it. I'm sure that I'm "preaching to the choir," so to speak. But, I think that the mentality that you're discussing is a reflection of our culture turning our backs on God and his absolutes.

    I’m an author, and I’ve had people take my books and put them on free sites. Then I had to go through the process of doing take down notices. Stealing is not okay, period. No matter how big or small or rich or poor the victim is. Morally, it’s the same as walking into someone’s house and taking their property.

    Your premise is good, but the corporate analogy you give is flawed. Those designers aren't stealing from Walt Disney- he's dead. They're stealing from people like Tyrus Wong (principal illustrator on Bambi) and Sanjay Patel (one of the primary illustrators at Pixar). They aren't stealing from Marvel, they're stealing from Stan Lee's dependents. It's not the guys at the top you need to worry about, two of the ones you mentioned have been dead for years and the other two have plenty of money and wouldn't even notice if 10k of it went missing. It's the people below them that are doing the ACTUAL WORK to create those iconic characters that are getting stolen from. That's who you should be protecting.

    • @ItsCrochetOClock
      @ItsCrochetOClock  4 года назад

      Interesting. “Those people” as in the actual artists who drew those characters or in the example given in this video developed The Child along with many other people involved in the process were compensated for their work and own no rights to it. The folks who own the companies, dead, alive, dependents, share holders etc are the ones who are in fact being stolen from as it is their property legally. Nice try though.

    • @jenisedai
      @jenisedai 4 года назад +1

      @@ItsCrochetOClock the artists also benefit, directly and indirectly, from the sale of characters they create. If you're going to go all in on the corporations but not stick up for the little people who work for that corporation, then you aren't actually standing up for those who create, you're only standing up for those with the purse strings- which just makes you a corporate apologist and not a friend of the independent designer.
      Because don't forget, those big corporations do a whole lot of stealing of their own. They steal designs from independent artists and use their 900 lb gorilla legal power to keep the designer from complaining. My daughter is an artist and has known several people whose drawings got stolen by corporations and were unable to fight them. There have even been cases when the artists were issued cease and desist letters by the same corporations who stole their designs, because the corporation had copywritten designs they didn't create. So stick up for the artists, whether in a corporation or independent. Don't stick up for the corporation itself.

    • @ItsCrochetOClock
      @ItsCrochetOClock  4 года назад

      Are you new around here? Did you miss the entire video dedicated to corporations, massive fashion labels stealing from crochet designers? Of course I stand up for artists. ALL THE TIME. In this case however and in the words you’re writing here, I’m sorry. I do not agree with you. People jumped on a bandwagon for no other reason than to profit from someone else’s property. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

    • @jenisedai
      @jenisedai 4 года назад +1

      @@ItsCrochetOClock actually I am new around here so no, I haven't seen all of your videos. And quite frankly I have little desire to watch any more of them, or to recommend them to my friends, thanks to the bitchy attitude you demonstrated to what I thought was a reasonable point to make- even if it wasn't a fawning answer like the posts you hearted were. There's more to life than money, and there's more to designs than money. The people who created those characters are being stolen from whether or not you think they benefit financially. Their designs are being cheapened by the theft, their skills less special by those who produce the fakes. I didn't realize I had stumbled onto a site that was all about the benjamins, but since that's how you come across I'll just put this channel on my do not watch list and go about my day.

    • @ItsCrochetOClock
      @ItsCrochetOClock  4 года назад

      You’re right. It is all about the benjamins. For everyone. I’m not certain exactly what response you thought you’d get here by coming jere staying that those corporations wouldn’t even notice the money missing. You and that thought process is exactly why this video had to be made. Don’t come to my house trying to twist my words around to make it seem like I’m the faulty one here. Wrong is wrong. Period. No matter who is doing it or whom it’s being done to.

    100 times Yes! at the beginning of the summer I was commissioned to make a pocket shawl. The customer sent my a facebook post from third party that contained pics of said shawl and a design schematic. I looked up the pattern cause I always do and want to give the designer credit for their design. Guess what it was a stolen pattern. That third party took someone else's design from a few years ago that is currently a paid for pattern on Etsy/Raverly and put is up on facebook for free for the whole world to see. UGH! I contacted the original designer and let her know as well as got permission to sell the item I made from her pattern (with my purchasing the pattern of course!). AND of course always giving the original designer credit. I also made sure that my customer base knew that this facebook post contained stolen property and to not reshare that post.

    I know that there was some issues with the Child pattern being sold. I always thought that it would be great if the designer of the pattern and Disney could have gotten together and agreed that the pattern could be sold but all profits should go to charity! Everyone wins . . . or I would think that everyone would win?
    I didn't know about the rest of this.
    Anyways, stop taking other people stuff!
