I met Jack here in Virginia, he was playing a festival here and after his set he wanted to catch a buzz, the festival promoters knew that I could help in that department, we rode around on a golf cart smoking weed and talking about Amsterdam, John Prine and weed,, what an treat
Always amazed me that she wrote ‘I will always love you’ to pay respect to Porter when she knew she was leaving his show. She knew it hurt him but also knew she needed to go solo to find her true potential. Love them both.
A fellow I worked with had a house boat on Kentucky lake. It was at some marina and he kept it there for a long time. He was a beer drinker and would go to buy beer in cases and had a two wheel dolly he would roll it to the boat on. One day he was bringing a half dozen of so cases to the boat and a neighbor stepped out on his houseboat and said hello. It was Eddy Arnold, he and the fellow I had worked with became friendly and he would sometimes be out on the deck of the boat and Eddy Arnold would invite him over, not all the time but sometimes. He told me that Eddy Arnold was just a very nice gentleman and often told stories of his life in country music. My former coworker told me that if you had not known what an important singer and entertainer Eddy Arnold was you would not have known it by his actions, he said he was just a really friendly nice gentleman. Like me, my coworker was a huge Eddy Arnold fan. Shawn Camp has so many great stories and is such a good story teller any time he is talking is worth listening to, your style of getting a person started and letting them feel comfortable enough to share their memories is what makes all this work. Keep them coming I will be here to listen.
I love Shawn Camp. I love to hear him tell stories, especially about Guy Clark. If I remember correctly Shawn co-wrote Magnolia Wind with Guy. I saw him a few years ago with The Earls of Leicester. What a great entertainer he is.
Shawn Camp is one of my favorite writers of all time. When he was talking about signing with Jack’s Tracks publishing I nearly cried. As a musician I feel those days are gone. The music business of music has consumed the art of music. I’m in Kentucky and Nashville might as well be a million miles away. Our music scene is completely different.
The one benefit of our recent pandemic is the creative use of youtube by current recording musicians, like Otis, has been the providing of video's like this one. Thank you to all that have made these presentations. :)
Back in the mid-'70s I noticed that my Doc Watson album and one of my Townes Van Zandt albums were both produced by Jack Clement. At the time I wondered, "Who is this guy?" but I had no idea. I've only remembered that since watching your videos and it's been interesting to learn just how important a figure he was in country music.
Cowboy came into a club I co-owned at the time (the Down Home) with the band Marley's Ghost. Of course he had a three camera shoot going. He sat in with the band as well as holding court in the room. I had a recording studio upstairs of the club and Jack let me record the show. Another time a band I was in had played the town's "Blue Plum" festival. After we played the festival the Down Home was open but no music was scheduled. Since we had our gear in our cars we asked if we could set up and play for whomever came in. Shawn had played the main stage of the festival. He showed up at the club and asked if he could sit in with us. We had a great time trying to keep up with him. Both great gentlemen.
Shawn gave a great recollection of times with Cowboy Jack Clement and times at his studio, what cool memories, and to have been a part at the launching of his ashes in order to fulfill his last request is so special. Thank you for sharing this video of Shawn with us!
My favorite Cowboy Jack song is one I could sing every other day : " I don't like it but I guess Things happen that way ". That song kind of hits the way I feel.
Great stories! Had the pleasure of talking to Cowboy Jack when he was doing press for the PBS American Masters doc about Sun Records. I'm a DC native so I grilled him about his days when he was stationed at the Marine barracks here, playing bluegrass in the divey hillbilly bars in DC when such things existed. Such a character!
Always was fascinated by Cowboy Jack’s legacy but difficult to find out the good stories,, thanks again Otis for finding the inside treasures of Nashville!!! 😎
Effron White and I are blessed to be recording/producing Effron’s newest album there, thanks to Shawn. I love that Cowboy had a tree with a swing made and he put it, that whole tree, in his office.
I Love these interviews they really a inspiration , please keep up these these people that have impacted our music world ,thank you again.your fan mark
❤ here’s a piece of trivia, Cowboy Jack, was at one time married to Jessi Colters sister. Otis you are creating quality music history within these videos. Much appreciation
Maybe, if Shawn hadn't gone into the room with all the funny smells coming out of it, he might remember more 😂😂😂 Great stories, thank you both! I think it would be amazing to record at Jack's studio...
Hi, Otis, please ask your buddy, Sean Camp, to make an album of the Sis Draper songs he and Guy Clark wrote. I heard him say he'd thought about doing it. I wish he would, they are excellent songs.
Here's some fun footage from Cowboy Jack's movie, Shakespeare Was A Big George Jones Fan. ruclips.net/video/IRHZlD2FGa8/видео.html
Thanks Otis , that was great .
Shawn's Eddy Arnold impersonation is the best damn thing ever. : )

Absolutely wonderful. Shawn is just a really cool cat, too. So humble, yet one talented rascal.

That's real good, getting the back stories from Otis. One other thing about isolating is having 'safe' time to just pay attention to the stories.
Great Stories! Shawn is a great singer and musician, love his Lester Flat in Earls of Lester! Seems like a fine person.

That's my favourite too. It helps me through a lot of 'things that happen that way' 👍

Goodbye cruel circus, I'm off to join the world
I remember a lot of tributes to Cowboy especially on Outlaw Country after he passed but I don’t think I heard about the story of spreading his ashes.
I just got Cowboy Jack’s Home Movies (Shakespeare was a George Jones fan) last week. Someone needs to write a book about him. Maybe Fergie
Hey Otis! I bet Mike Armistead could tell some great stories!
Hi, Otis, please ask your buddy, Sean Camp, to make an album of the Sis Draper songs he and Guy Clark wrote. I heard him say he'd thought about doing it. I wish he would, they are excellent songs.
Oh that smell The smell that's around you LoL
She could’ve made Charles Manson look like a country music star.
