Wildland firefighters are uneducated dudes with firehoses. The ONLY reason they have the job is because it was the only job they could find. Underpaid, in poor physical shape and UNDER EDUCATED. This is why fires burn so much, it's got nothing to do with fire itself or the phenomenon that its some difficult force to deal with.

The amount of death is unbelievable. All those trees and wildlife, is heartbreaking. The homes lost and lives upended is terrible. I pray for all the people and wildlife. The saddest part is that one person did this . Let that sink in for a minute. A single person did this much chaos and damage.

Wildlife mostly get out of the way. May be trivial overall but the West half *is 100% ecologically beneficial,* naturally they don't show that, not dramatic. The Forest Service has been fussing about how to burn Ishi wilderness, grasslands and oaks, for yrs but afraid to do it and knew it'd happen anyway.
Ishi lands will be much healthier after this.

I suppose my biggest gripe is with it being arson. but I am familiar with the need for these things to happen and how it can rejuvenate the land over time . Seeing the benefits of this incident is definitely a positive response and rational silver lining.
@@johnnyblack2125 A century plus of mismanagement has painted us into a corner. Fire is an essential element of all these lands but the heavily forested areas are now so fuel laden after decades to half a century or more of no fire allowed that it's very hard to get back to where we need to be.
Clear cutting and "high grading", cutting the big trees which should be left standing, are also major contributors. But it used to be the natives then also ranchers and loggers would burn it off just as winter was setting in, pretty much every yr. That WORKED, but then Feds in their infinite wisdom curtailed the healthy practice really F'ing us up.
Native tribes are now insisting on traditional prescribed burning on their lands, that will help, but small areas of prescribed fire isn't enough and often mechanical clearing, where possible, may be required first.
What ignites it is sort of trivial, be it arson or lightening or accident, it will always be something, the issue is why now things are so 'explosive'.

I used to deliver into the Wal-Mart DC in Tehama county. that county is a below average county of small farms and a few big businesses, like distribution centers. losing homes, farms and a major employer will be devastating for the people.

Why dont we have more planes and helicopters? The state has money? Homeowners in forested areas pay 5x as much as they were for insurance than they did before this became an prominent issue. What would the tax burden be to double our cal fire budget? Less than the increased premiums thats for sure!

Fires generate cash money for many reasons. The fire broke out in an area accessable by cars and easily fire trucks. They let the fire expand to this. Had they brought in planes in earlier less profits. Out in Vina is the main attack helicopter 10Mins tops but how long did that take? Numerous errors = more profit.
Money goes into arms and is used to kill people rather than helping populations and saving lives. This is the mentality of governments! The real criminals are in power! They don't care about people, they are well protected and far from disasters!

I had a beautiful little paid for house on 2 and a half acres near Bass Lake in the Sierra Foothills that I almost lost to the Lake Fire 4 years ago. I planned on retiring there but realized it was probably only a matter of time before it would burn down and didn't want to deal with that risk as I grew older. People who stay there know the risk so don't feel to bad for them. If they lose everything they chose to take that risk knowing full well what could happen any given summer.
