I really admire how he deals with Mary's confession. I can see he really loves her. He could've been really hurt and get emotional with her confession but he gather himself and doesn't blame/judge her and says he never could despise her. His character is just perfect!
That's why his death was so sad and tragic. That face though 0:20 Matthew Crawley too precious for this world.
@@MsDoctorWhoFan1 Agree 1000%. Matthew was the best and most noble/decent character in the series. His death was utterly traumatic and while the show went on, it definitely was never the same -- Matthew was THAT beloved.

@@morley364 Matthew's character, as created and written by the brilliant Julian Fellowes. He understood what she meant, but was so steeped in tradition and "doing the right thing, behaving in a certain manner" being the noble and forthright gentleman that he was.
It's a naughty word mamma would never let me say.
one thing i didnt like was how they brushed over the fact that Pamuk largely forced himself into Mary’s bedroom. She didn’t pursue him except for harmless flirting while hunting, and he was the one to enter her room and tell her not to scream or put up a fight. She only went along with it because he intrigued her as much as she intrigued him. I wouldn’t say that she was raped or assaulted, but it wasn’t Mary’s idea and I never saw her as any less honorable (for the time period)

@@MM-eo2oz I mean...we don't really know what details she told anyone. They kind of gloss over her telling the story to Matthew. I guess we know she didn't pretend to her mother that Pamuk "forced himself on her" but we don't have any way of knowing whether she told the whole story to her mother after the body was out of her room.
Right- she ignored her first instinct that it was dishonorable. It's like that for all of us we have that intuition but depending on our circumstances/ people in our lives we allow without self care and adjusting and enforcing boundaries we can lost touch.
I like how they even acknowledge that if not for the meddling of others they'd have ended up together long ago.

To be fair not a lot of people died on this show. Other than Sybil, you don’t really care about the others save William. It’s hard to even bring to mind who died in this show. Major Bryant, Tom Bellis (whoever danced with Sybil at her ball) pamuk of course.... there must’ve been others but that’s really all that comes to mind
Ill never be able to survive a stare from Dan Steven's beautiful pair of blues nor would I stand a better chance from listening to his mere baritone either.

One of my very favorite lines, and Dan delivers it with such panache!
I really loved how this showed that first and foremost, they were friends. They knew each other so well -- this secret gave him pause because for a minute he questioned if he really knew her like he thought, but then after he sorts it out, they fall into easy conversation and comraderie once more. He knows she is flawed -- as is he. In those days men had little friendship and intimacy with women, they were supposed to pure and proper angels, not real human beings. But Matthew knows better, knows she is a whole person, and that's what makes their love so real and strong.
Matthew was so wonderful....they really should not have killed him off

They had such wonderful marriage and he’s character was so wonderful that they believe they only way to make a reason his character is for him to be dead than tainting it with other way of ridding his character. But it I wish it was something like lost at sea that has chances of him being alive 😞😞

Honestly I am glad Mary listened to her father and Mathew. No one liked him and for good reason. A marriage with him would not have been just unpleasant. Showing he was not above blackmailing Mary into matrimony shows that he is emotionally manipulative and has no issue with disregarding morals to get what he wants. If she had stayed with him she would have signed away her freedom and probably herself because with people like Richard who do not care about anything other than what they wanted he would have used emotional and probably physical abuse to train her into his "perfect" wife. She probably would have tried to fight , but she would be worn down. Sorry to get so dark, but out of all the villianous people in this show Richard is up there with Mr.Bates ex wife, and the nanny.
For a second there I thought what a marriage between Carlisle and Vera Bates would be like.

Mary and Richard Carlisle's proposed sham marriage was built on an entire season of his threat to reveal her secret. It was very strange that once she found the courage to break with him, we never heard from him, or his threats, again. Its like the character and his and Mary's entire experience together fell into a black hole.
They probably announced the engagement like the very next day. But like to announce a scandal like that which happened YEARS ago when the Earls daughter and his heir just announced their getting married? He wouldn't dare. That would make him public enemy number 1. Better to go along with it saying to everyone that it just didn't work out because of Mary and Matthew being so in love. Carlisle is a business man and would think twice before publishing something that could take down his whole empire. If Mary and Matthew didn't get engaged, then I think yes we would of seen a lot more of the fallout but I think this is a much more of a neat way to tie things up plus we get Mary and Matthew together.

Before leaving, Sir Richard told Mary that he loved her much more than she loved him, and he might be very sincere in that moment. His threats could be motivated by the fact that he knew all along Mary was half-hearted with him and he was a man who always wins. By the end of it, he might choose not to expose Mary because he knew it would hurt her so much.

Given the success of the series and the 2 sequels, I wonder if Dan Stevens regrets his decision to leave the show. I can't complain because Matthew Goode is just amazing
I don't think he does. I was heartbroken when Matthew was killed off but it sounds like Dan felt he was being pigeonholed into period drama work and that would definitely have continued given how much they're still milking the series all these years later. I've seen more recent interviews with him where he says how much he likes the greater variety of work he has now.
These actors are a funny bunch.

amazing acting by the guy. the way he looks when she says "it was lust" or when she says "i'm impure".
Matthew never judged anyone. He forgave Mary for Pamuk and made Tom his best man. He was truly a role model for Robert; I think Robert learned to be open minded from Matthew. Certainly Matthew would’ve accepted Edith’s secret about Marigold without hesitation.

Funny -- thought the same. But it didn't last long. Always felt he was just okay when introduced, but something changed along the way, in a big, big way, and I became infatuated with his near-perfect character and portrayal. Matthew was so good, the series lost its heart and soul when he died.

I always liked Matthew. “Don’t joke, don’t make it little, not when I’m trying to understand.” I could tell from that that he was a good man.
I haven't made it past season 3 I will not go past season 3 without Matthew I think they should have had some type of character arc to where he seemed dead just in case he wanted to come back to the show I just couldn't watch Mary fall in love with someone else after such a brutal time with this perfect hero of a man he came in became a white hero saved family gave the family an heir and then he died I'm sorry but I'm done at season 3
Dan Stevens didn't want to come back, at all. He was so bored filming scenes that he would play with his phone, under the table.

Nobody sounded like Dan Stevens. His voice is incredibly resonant and as elegant as his blue eyes, perfect hair and everything else about him.
Just thought I’d add… Titanic sunk in 1912 but Matthew & Isobel definitely didn’t arrive to Downton until 1913. That’s clear because as their car pulls up, the screen flashes that it’s now 1913.
Perhaps the story will never kill him if Dan never leave....

I know this was a hundred years ago, in a provincial setting and involving a particularly conservative stratum of society. But even then, I find it hard to believe people would be so horrified by a grown woman, whose only claim to fame is springing from an aristocratic line that hasn’t done much of note in many generations, having had a one night stand some years earlier. After four years of hell on earth, people are that eager to wag their tongues over a thoroughly uninteresting scandal?
aperson22222 People are still fascinated by the Royal Family these days and they’ve been pretty obsolete for decades. Plus, it wasn’t just the fact that Mary slept with Pamuk, it was the fact that he died in her bed too that would be scandalous.

@@Cleptrio Social standing was all that a woman had to her name. Sadly there are still people who judge women today for following through on their sexual desires, which are perfectly natural as they would be in any human being. It's ridiculous, but it was the standard for the time.

Let’s be honest though it wasn’t about the sex, it’s about rich people having more avenues for financial success and avoiding paying their taxes; and the lower classes using every tool to ground them. Sex is just a tool they used. Mary’s virginity was just another tool, used to uphold that better than thou attitude she treated everybody with. Purity has nothing to do with sex, and everything to do with how you treat others. I would like to note the religious people I went to school with were some of the nicest people I’ve met because they understood humility.
Mary acted so self righteous, when caught in her scandals, she suddenly became so helpless

Wince-inducing wooden acting by Michelle Dockery here. I'm surprised, in view of how good an actor she has been most of the time in the Downton saga.
Um I think that is the accepted stance of a person in the wrong in those days
She doesn't seem even slightly wooden to me. She and Dan Stevens are both intense in this scene. She has a singular talent for expressing powerful emotions while keeping her facial expressions and vocal tone restrained, which makes her perfect to play a passionate lady of that time and place. The chemistry between Mary and Matthew is always electric!

Although we can never be sure, I think the fact that they were quick to grab those sheets and run indicates that those two actually slept together. I doubt that Mary would have described herself as damaged and impure if he had only been ‘getting ready’ to do the deed at the time of his death.
She's so full of it. Typical Mary does what she wants and expects everybody to be ok with it.
Mary NEVER expected anyone to be okay with what happened with Pamuk. That was the fear that drove her, that she would not be forgiven.

"I'm Tess of the D'Uberville to your Angel Claire." This is why Mary was never a likable character. Tess was raped. Mary consented. Having her compare herself to Tess proves the show runner has Mary being a narcissist.
I studied Tess and we spent months on all the contemporary and not so critics who were on both sides of the ' raped or seduced ' debate . Also Pamuk kissed her multiple times with no consent and she was shocked and then he comes into her bedroom which is already half way ruined her if anyone knows even if nothing happened. Mart wasn't dragged into an alley but she was coerced . Like virgin who don't even know what a condom is levels of innocence vs a man who can brush off a man trying to flirt with him and flip the tables in a snap ( vs Jimmy's reaction decade later ) in an attempt to seduce said innocent young woman .
Mary may have consented but you seem to be forgetting some very important facts here. Pamuk came to Mary's room in the middle of the night, UNINVITED and walked right in. When she asked him to leave, he refused. So, did she really consent?

She was written just as she was, a complete narcissist, who hated anyone that didn't fall for her manipulation. If you can't see that, then must be just like her.
