This scene is so beautiful. The way Mary looks him with surprise and Matthew smiling at her when she says he needs to properly ask her to marry him....they are so sweet together. It's just unforgettable and the happiest scene in the series.

This and the train station scene are among my favorites in the entire series. Matthew and Mary were perfect together. I was saddened that Dan left the show. Matthew was my favorite character. He was an honorable man that treated everyone with dignity and respect. He had very high moral standards and strived to do what was right and just. The entire series was remarkably written and produced. I never tire of watching it. What was refreshing was the historical accuracy of the roles, wardrobe and events. One of the most beautiful musical scores ever written.

Ok but the relationship Mary, Tom and Isobel had with each other after S3 was so beautiful. Isobel, Tom and Mary were all affected by Sybils and Matthew's deaths. Mary lost her sister, Tom lost his wife, Isobel lost her youngest niece. Mary lost her husband, Tom lost a friend, Isobel lost her son. But the way Tom became a brother and mentor to Mary, how Isobel helped Tom feel welcome in the family, and the way Isobel relied on Edith, Mertin, Mary, Tom and Violet to help her grieve, was so beautiful.
Sybil wasn't Isobel's niece. But otherwise, yeah, fair points.
And this is why I want a wedding in December. Something so romantic. The world needs you back Matthew Crawley

@ancan963 Most of the season finales were called "Christmas Episodes" because that's when they were originally broadcast, not necessarily set. In this episode, Christmas had already occurred several weeks before he proposes.
Love the way Mathew looks up to "heaven" when he talks about Lavinia.

It just occurred to me that in the Series 1 finale, Mary asks Matthew if he would have stayed if she had accepted him, and in the Series 2 finale, Matthew asks Mary if she’d stay if he asked her to.

That last shot of Matthew and Mary twirling in the snow, in jubilation, with Downton Abbey towering above them is my favorite shot in the series.
This is one of my favorite scenes of the show, from the scenery, the music to the dialogue. There's something magical about a snowing night and a proposal.
The best marriage proposal ever made by an actor. Great feelings, emotion and really super.

Possibly the best scene in this series!!! So romantic! At the end when he proposes and she accepts - the expressions on her face, his face are just so genuinely happy! And you see an uncontrolled exuberance from them you never saw before or again

I actually think that this felt like the natural end of the series. The plot had been centered around how this relationship would save Downton, and to have them finally fall in love and decide to marry really brought it to a close for me.
@@kauri44 I feel the same. I only rewatch seasons 1 and 2. Plus, the quality of the rest of the series doesn’t match the first two seasons. The ending of season 2 ties the main plotlines from the first two seasons together (the search for an heir, Mary and Matthew’s love story and the death of Pamuk) and you can perfectly end it here. If I remember correctly, the only storyline that is not resolved is Bates and his prison sentence but at least his death sentence is commuted and there’s hope for an appeal.
This relationship made us fall in love with their characters- and because this moment was so good, it made us hurt so bad when Matthew died in the end of season 3.
They are so prefect for each other. I waited a whole season for them to get back together. They were made for each other, that's for sure
There better be a point to all these Mary and Matthew feels y'all are forcing me to have, like I want Matthew resurrected to life in the movie.

I never tire watching this scene again & again….. and every time I simply forget they‘re just acting! Oh, Matthew, how could you be so cruel and cut short this wonderful love story so abruptly?
The last season of Downton Abbey my favorite scene was when Mary was going to marry Henry Talbot. Mary went to Mathew's graveside to let him know what her plans were, but in the end she told Mathew "I will always love you my darling ". It just made me shiver & cry. It just showed how much she loves Mathew & he will always have her true heart.
This brought me back to the first time I watched Downton... what a masterpiece of a show!

"may they be happy. with my love." lavinia gave up her life to the illness so matthew and mary can be happy. she was a very kind and pure woman, unselfish. matthew is actually so lucky to be loved that much by two women. well, he deserves it tho. he's also a kind and an honorable man. too bad that he died, he's my favorite character.

Defenitly one of my favorite downton abbey moments. Its so romantic. I admit I started disliking Mary in season 5 but i will always love Mary and Matthew together.
Golden Rose I hear what you’re saying. But I see Mary’s character as having some of the most depth.She is not all good or bad. She’s complicated like so many of us. That’s one of the things I loved about Downton.
These two together were an amazing partnership and I could watch this scene over and over ... her red dress, the snowflakes, the shy way he approaches her with questions ... and how she was so surprised and happy... when it was easy to make Mary happy was when Matthew was there ❤

Mary wouldn't have listened this time to her aunt. She had to experience the consequences of listening to others instead of listening to her heart at the garden party in season 1.

😍... I miss Downton Abbey so much.. Haven't had a new fav costume drama ever since.
I would only see S1 to S3 if I ever wish to rewatch again. M&M♥️ My heart beat fast everytime they shared a scene. It made me to long for the scenes they share together. I have attached with them so much that I can't bear to watch Mary being with other guys. It's amazing what a fictional character can do to you💔
THIS scene!! 😍 As a M&M fan the wait was finally over and they could be together for real after everything they had gone through especially given their feelings for one another were still there despite being in other relationships.
Their happiness was a joy to watch and I couldn't even contemplate what was going to happen in the next Christmas DA special.
It was just a bit too much with Sybil barely gone and then the worse with Matthew. I'll admit that I couldn't watch DA after the first episode of the fourth series and only watch the rest of the show a while after it ended and that Will be the only time I do. It will just be a series 1-3 for me on re-watch.
And lastly, I've enjoyed watching Dan Stevens in other stuff however I don't quite feel I'll ever totally forgive him for leaving DA. His career, his choice but then it's my choice if I feel the way I do.

I totally agree, I arrest at the end of season 3 and re-watch. I also look for others films of Dan Stevens. If I were Dan, I would stay with the show to the end... The best actor should live with their characters they play, the love of fans ... But I always love character Matthew Crawley, this is the best role in his career ...

2:59 really hurts... Their music theme, the happiness they experienced in that moment... Only to be shattered by Matthew's death.
They couldn't spend much time together. It's a tragic romantic story. The fact that Matthew dies not too long after his proposal makes me appreciate every scene that includes him even more.
DA wasn't the same without Matthew anymore. I wish they would have ended the TV show with the birth of their son.
