  • Following the F1 season finale, Fernando Alonso car swapped with seven-time NASCAR world champion Jimmie Johnson at the Bahrain International Circuit. Each driver jumped into the cockpit of their counterparts: Jimmie in a McLaren F1, and Fernando in a NASCAR.
    The two legendary world champions went head-to-head in the desert to get a glimpse of how the other half live. And boy, was it epic.

    Some F1 fans seem to think that NASCAR drivers don't experience high G-Forces. While they may not be pulling 4-5 Gs under braking, they often experience 2-4 Gs for a much more prolonged period of time, especially at tracks like Daytona and Talladega where drivers can be flat out through all 4 highly banked turns. Some also seem to think that NASCAR requires far less skill than F1 because "all they do it turn left". Those people seem to forget that these cars have almost zero downforce, thus very little grip, weigh over twice as much as an F1 car (NASCAR 3,400 lb [1,542 kg] vs. F1 1548 lb [702 kg]), and often race at speeds in excess of 200 mph (320 kph) while bumper to bumper at tracks like Talladega and Daytona. Don't take this as me trying to bash Formula 1, as I'm a huge fan of both motorsports; it just gets old to see and hear non-NASCAR fans/followers trash it for "not being Formula 1".

    • @mabra33
      @mabra33 4 года назад

      I agree that nascar does require skill, but it is much much easier compared to f1. Nascar don't feel proper g forces because their body isn't exposed to the drag. F1 drivers experience a lot of g force in their neck and that's the reason they have the strongest necks in sport

      NASCAR's pushrod V8's would be turning significantly over 10k if the ruling org didn't spec gear rules. The engines have plateaued at 94-9800rpm for almost a decade now because of these silly rulesets. NHRA Prostock too, which is even more stupid. 500 cubic inch pushrod V8's that were turning almost 11k rpm, now limited to 10,500. It really hurt the Mopar cars, now it's an all Chevy series and dying. Which is sad, N/A pushrod motors making almost 3hp/inch at 500 inchs.

    Massive compared to what it’s sitting next to, but fairly average size/weight for a small block.
    10k rpm isn’t low revving for a 5.8L v8. I bet the piston speed (how fast the piston travels) is similar to the F1. Despite spinning about half the speed, the piston has to travel about twice as far per rotation.

Jimmy could do it, but not in a few laps, never having done it before.. tire temps , brake temps, cornering forces, neck muscles, fitness, etc, plus a custom seat, left foot braking, all the drs/t/c, electronics , brake bias, and the rate at which things happen in an f1 car (normally off the mark on heavy braking into an apex).. takes time to do well, that car is almost a custom fit for Alonzo's dimensions as well, pedal length , throttle response, tps preference , driving style , plus areo setup.. set the car up nice and neutral, and hope jimmy doesn't pitch in in the wall too many times.. lol
