  • This VW beetle was hidden in my own neighborhood. I was able to buy it … but it’s in way worse shape than I thought. What should I do?

You can do this ! 67 is the best year for the beetle they’re very sought after 🎉
Maybe think of sourcing a new whole floor pan to help boost the project forward? Or restore the original and keep the numbers, it’s up to you but this is worth it ….
    Good luck 🤞

@@thebarrytone I had a 67 that was the opposite, the body was too far gone with UK serious rust but it oddly had a good pan so I reshelled it and swapped it all over and it made it so so much more manageable :-)

I just turned 16 and I spent my savings on a 1972 vw super beetle. I’m also not very experienced in working on cars but I’ve done a lot of research. From what I know it is possible to save a beetle even from this condition. Passion is the most important thing, as long as you have that, I think you can do it.

You got this Barry! I'm in the same boat - new to VW Beetles, always wanted one, now I do and I have a LOT of learning and work ahead of me. The old question is "How do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time". go for it! L

That Beetle is beautiful. You have to save it. Yes lots of work but all parts are available and lots of info is also available too. I'm a VW restorer so feel free to ask me anything. Look forward to following this resto. You can do it. Also 67 is the best year.

A lot of this will depend on what your budget is. If you take this on, I'd recommend you take a welding class at your local JC and practice a lot before you start in on this. Once you get the metal work done, the rest will seem easy. The challenge will be staying interested as that amount of metalwork will be tedious and drawn out which can sap your desire to keep going. My buddy has a VW that needs about this much metalwork - he got a shop to look at it and they said, "if we do it, you'll have 50k into a car worth 15k". So, unless you have deep pockets, this is a DIY job for sure. Take your time deciding how you want to proceed and good luck! BTW, my dad and I worked on VWs together when I was young and now that he's passed, nothing give me more joy than working on my VW with my dad's tools... I feel like he's with me!

The killer with any classic is completeness. If it’s all there, you can bring it back one piece at a time. Take your time and have a plan. You’d be surprised how many things you can take home to work on. Get some totes and a whack load of dollar store Tupperware containers for your parts. Have fun.

    • @thebarrytone
      @thebarrytone  4 месяца назад +1

Great advice! Yes, it’s more complete than my 69 bug, and that’s a pain.

With the car being a popular one I don't think you will have much trouble doing it up yourself, all parts are ready available of the shelf and they only bolt on,if your not comfortable welding get someone in to do it the engine would definitely have to be stripped down and rebuilt which is not cheap but all in all you can do it,and there is plenty of RUclips tutorials out there, what ever you good luck and I will watch to see how you do😊

Acid bath then repair and replace what ever needs to be done. Do it slowly and gradually you’ll find everything you need to repair and replace.

Wrong front wings for a 5 stud 6v car. Most of missing bits of floor pan and heater channels can be replaced. Looks like a nice Delph blue car originally.
Lot's of work and welding needed, good luck 👍

Barry T. Smith ... just remember, when it comes to Beetles - all 26 million of them - all of them are save-able. A friend of mine in Kingskerswell, Devon, England, owns a mint one year only 1967 Beetle - it's never been welded. Mind you, he also owns a mint 1951 T2 split window Devon camper bus, and there are only 4 of those left on the planet - there's no telling how much personal blood, sweat and tears went into making these two live on - we are not owners ... we are custodians ... A clip from Woody Allen's film Sleeper, should be a case in point ... 🤗 ... : - ruclips.net/video/yyy3hVIgJM8/видео.htmlsi=Qy5mv2y1BaWAWpSs

Its a tough first time project. Alot of it you can buy. You could get a donar body. Buy a little mig welder you will learn. Watch videos on you tube every step. A 67 is a one year only very desirable beetle. You can farm out jobs to improve results and save time.

I think you have to decide exactly how much of your free time and disposable income you want to devote to the restoration of this car. After sitting outside for 30+ years the car is going to need to have just about everything rebuilt or replaced. It will be a multi month/year project just to make it drive able, working evenings and weekends. Major expenses will include engine and perhaps, transmission rebuild, new brakes and brake lines, gas tank and fuel lines, new tires, new interior. The rust repair is a whole other issue. First you'll need new floor pans and heater channels, plus miscellaneous other panels to replace what has rusted into oblivion. Without welding skills you will most likely have to farm this work out, or learn as you go. On the plus side: 1. 1967 is one of the more desirable model years and commands a higher value than any of the later years if you do decide to restore it. You cannot expect to ever recoup your time and money if you do restore it, however. 2. You already own the car and unless you overpaid you should be able to get your purchase price back, as is. If it were me, I would sell this car and purchase one that is drive able and work on it as you go, one project at a time. Remember, if your budget allows, buy a 67 or earlier model as they are more desirable from a collectors standpoint, and easier to re-sell.

Great job on 4 years!! I was also thinking about putting earlier fenders on the front. I think 67s in non-USA countries had the earlier fenders in some places. I could be wrong about that. I appreciate the encouragement, and I’ll be documenting stuff here. Good luck with your bug!

So, if you looking to build a YT channel, then by all means , restore this one. Weekly episodes could bring lots of views and subscribers. Looks like you will need one of everything to make it drivable. Shame the PO treated it like a dumpster and left it for dead so many years ago.
