Coronavirus: Inside Italy's COVID-19 Lockdown | Foreign Correspondent

- It’s Europe’s coronavirus epicentre with cases of infected rising by up to a thousand daily. Hospitals are full. Patients, young and old, are dying. To control the outbreak, Italy is in lockdown but is it too little too late?
In the province of Lodi, half an hour from northern Italy’s capital Milan, it’s day 23 of the lockdown.
A young couple - Isabella and Roberto - are stuck inside with their 3-year-old daughter Eleonora. They’re wondering when they will be able to resume normal life.
The northern Lombardy region has been dubbed the ground zero of Italy’s corona crisis. So far, over two thousand people have died there and nearly thirty thousand have been infected.
After Lombardy, the virus spread through the north, then nationwide.
At first, doctors mistook it for the flu. Precious time was lost and now Italy, known for its warm embraces and kisses on both cheeks, has more cases than any country apart from China.
Hospitals have been swamped. All non-corona related patients’ care has been sidelined. Doctors have been issued with protocols about which patients to prioritise and which not to - a form of disaster medicine.
Desperate to bring the virus under control, Italy has finally taken strong action, declaring a nationwide lockdown. Schools and universities have shut. Shops, cafes and restaurants have closed. Apart from buying groceries, people need official authorisation to move around or else face a fine.
Reporter Emma Alberici can’t travel to Italy but she has relatives and friends there.
For this special report, Emma taps into her network of family and friends as well as doctors and businesspeople, to tell an intimate story about how families, communities and the country are dealing with this unprecedented health emergency.
We use skype calls, phone diaries, photos and home video to bring you a picture of Italy in lockdown.
In Milan, we meet the head surgeon at one of the city’s major hospitals. He’s isolated at home after contracting the Coronavirus from one of his patients. He explains how he’s being treated for the infection and his fears for his wife, who’s working as an obstetrician.
There’s 7-year-old Zoe, who doing school from her home in Milan. She skypes her Australian friend Livia and they chat and giggle about the virus and hand washing.
We meet Emma’s 90-year-old aunt recently hospitalised with influenza, and her cousin - also Emma Alberici - who’s looking after her mother while holding down a job as CFO of a big pharmaceutical company in Milan - an industry which has special exemption from the lockdown.
We hear from Isabella and Roberto about the meals they’re cooking and the bread they’re baking.
And we interview virologist Prof Roberto Burioni who warns Australia that this virus is dangerous and must be taken with the utmost seriousness.
This is an intimate insight into an extraordinary moment in history.

why are you calling outbreak in Italy "ground zero", ground zero is in Wuhan, China.
Why does our government insist we don't wear face masks when common sense says you should and they are essential for every health care worker.
@@weemanas they said ground zero IN ITALY
I think this situation we're living it's changing for some of us their own priorities and way of thinking, giving more attention at simple things like family's life, own liberty. Someone will pursuit the happiness after this era, someone else will stop an unsatisfactory relationship or will have a baby...surely we'll have learned the value of live.
I'm living in North Milan area...fortunately me and my family are fine but in Bergamo, Cremona and in most country (especially in North), situation in critical.
Personally I'm investing this time in some personal projects, learning Deutsch has the priority since I want reach my gf in München asap.
It's fine to show all the wealthy people in big homes with gardens and treadmills and really it just a good opportunity for quality family time. What about the homeless and the poor people living in a small one-room flat. "Cabin fever" in a house on the lake...really?
it's a rich kid, their opinion doesnt matter
Just because you have money does not Mean that life dont change and that you cant have cabine fever. Dont hate because they have money, get your own
@@darkmoon8400 Nobody cares about rich , they are a small % of the population, and yet they are represented everywhere as if their life style is a norm, which is not. WE don't care about them, we care how normal people are going through this.
@Tom Wilcken You're so narrow minded. I bet you horded toilet paper.
It's not your ABC.
It's Alberici's and other virtue signaling elites' ABC.
These people despise working class Aussies.
We are all fat ignorant uncouth Norms to them.

wasn't a good idea for politicians in italy to tell their citizens to "hug a chinese" was it. watch?v=mNMdg4morQs
Watch some ww2 movies That's were Hero's. .you become too weak
We're not choosing to be martyrs. Nobody wants to die on a job. We're forced to do it in order to earn a paycheck. As much as I care about others. My life and my family's is my priority.
So were the plague doctors.
I would be more interested in seeing how everyday Italians are coping. Not just the wealthy.
They're coping being in isolation and when they have to leave their homes, they wear masks and gloves and stay out for the least time possible. Unfortunately the report was typical of modern manistream journalism. 10% truth and the rest is left up to speculation but with a sway towards the negative.
It's not easy to define the 'everyday' Italians... in my opinion the people who lives in the countryside like my parents where the population density is low, have an easier life compared to the ones that lives in a small apartment surrounded by residential condominiums (like the people you see on the videos singing from their balconies). But in this situation apart from the size of the house and having a an outdoor area, wealth is not a major and distinctive factor. It will be when life will get back to normal and lots of people will be jobless
The outbreak was in Milan, which is one of the richest cities in Europe. Do you want to change reality?
JOY Callcott: Excellente!
Me too! After 4 weeks of quarantena most of the people need liquids, money, notes.
The numbers have gone down for two days in Italia.
You will beat this.
Only the best.
I hope they will
just ignore the doctors and officials who say they've stopped counting the dead and that people are dying at home because there's no ICU beds.

I'm Canadian and I feel so sorry for the Italy I hope this is a wake up call for the next time a virus like this happens because if the world was a little quicker on taking this seriously we would not be in this pandemic at all we could of controlled the virus but the world allowed travellers to keep moving all over the world and spread it like wildfire. I hope this never happens again.
79tazman Agree. Last week 40 travelers from Quebec went to Jordan, for March break. They were told by the king of Jordan to go right back home. Now airlines should not have brought them in the first place, but then again they should have been banned from going. Asleep at the wheel.
They will never learn because for first the governments don't want to stop the economy. Look Trump, he wants his America running again without even realizing that the problem is already here.
yep....the moment China sneezes we block ALL air, land and sea travel to and from China.
If they stop this.... it will only be for awhile.... mark my words
Trying to restrict travel from a foreign country according to the world health organization you might be a racist. 🤔
I live in northern Italy, 15 minutes from Lombardy. It truly is eerie and quiet, but yet there is so much happening. Cleaning religiously, cooking, and reading have become our pass-time. It is extremely important to stay indoors and stay clean, folks. If we get sick, hospitals are not an option.

This makes me worried we are not taking distancing seriously in places like supermarkets.
I see people on bikes delivering food and people walking touching the same infrastructure, benches and crossing buttons.
We ARE NOT talking seriously about protecting health care workers enough
It is sad places like the US and Canada are being so slow to respond to the virus. I was disappointed in what the child said during the interview with his mother. Question to the child: are you worried about the virus.? Answer: Not really as it doesn't effect children. That's the problem, the younger people are carefree and think they are immortal. The parent has not instilled in them that it is dangerous to all and that a child can be a catalyst that gets an older person.
My 11 year old understands that children can handle it better, but he is really scared about me, his daddy and his grandparents. He even refused to go on a Cub Scout gathering at the beginning of quarantine in New Orleans because he didn’t want to infect us. It isn’t all young people. But it is a shame when some young people callously say they don’t
Care.
It would've been nice if everyone was staying at home istead of throwing parties and chanting "F*** corona" like in England.
Australia is even slower in the past 24 hours we've had over 400 new cases, the total is now 2250 and schools are still open and we haven't even thought of a full lock down yet
also most kids are worried about the virus
most classes at schools have 5-8 people max when we used to have 26-30
@@adem3472 thats rlly sad, i know young people ar at a lower risk but a few young people have even died, and if thy get it they might infect older people who may not be able to fight off the virus
I was born in Italy. I'm anguished that my mom's family are in such danger. It was such a pleasure to see how their italian spirits are still hopeful and are able to feel joyous in light of overwhelming fear. The reporter was such a sweet cousin worried for her friends and family in Italy. How brave it was that they took the time and filmed themselves. They opened up their homes to show us strength and adversity. The frontline of the caretakers is truly inspiring. I am in awe. These men and women are putting their lives on the line, of course they deserve a video.
No matter what level of society they are in. Wealthy or not, Italians will always show the best they have to offer. We still remember the devastation of WW1 AND WW2 AND INFLUENZA 1918.

What you’re showing is just a slap in the face to poor communities all over the world, who can no longer go to work and who do not earn any money at all, people with mortgage and kids. Families you have shown are on holiday. Eating delicacies, drinking wine. The majority of the population can not afford to buy maple syrup or olive oil. Has it crossed your mind? But it’s much easier than digging some close to reality stories and giving some practical advice. The pharmacies are running out of fever supplies, there are no masks. Make a video how to survive like this!!!
So true😥😥😥

Because these people are better off financially doesn't mean they won't suffer from this virus. ABC is at fault for showing the financially fit rather than the middle or lower class who are suffering financially. But big media shows this because they are out of touch with reality. You are being lied to about big medias choice of hand picked news.
it's family members from ABC they all have a lot of money, and the reason the use them to talk is because it is easier to get in contact with a family member rather than some stranger terrified of a virus.
*There is also advantage to those who are homebuddy and prefer to stay home alone than always going out to party. I thought all my life, I am weird because I do not go out with friends and now it benefits my health.*

I'm from Milan and my family moved to lake Maggiore a few years ago: lake Maggiore (shared by Lombardy and Piedmont) has always been the lake of the northern Italian wealthy families and its area is considered an extension of Milan. Guys we are talking about Lombardy the richest Italian regiin and one of the wealthiest areas in Europe . The financial capital of my country where factories , fashion , automotive companies (Alfa Romeo , Bugatti, Isotta Fraschini just to name a few) were born decades if not centuries ago....
Surely Milan is a big town and there are beggars, trumps , immigrants and poor people ... But we have to show how the middle class (upper middle class or so) average family deals with this desease and what this desease has caused .
Take it easy cause we know how unfortunate people live ... If you go to the suburbs you can see it ... Milan is a metropolis and like ANY metropolis in the world has very rich/wealthy people and slums where the Poors live .

In my country, we're also already in lockdown. @@kylealexander7024 True. Florida has lovely weather this time of year, and it's been a challenge to convince college students on Spring break, from all over the country, not to party in large crowds. The governor wasn’t eager to place restrictions until just 3 days ago, when state parks & beaches were finally shut down. But wait 2 weeks and we'll see if these tourists and college kids shared "the invisible" virus and took it home to their parents (Most colleges and universities are closed nationwide, so the students won't return to campus).
Of course, Florida's governor is more interested in the economic impact rather than infection prevention. Much like the role-model-in-chief, Donald Trump, who now said,
"We don't want the cure to be worse than the disease."
Well, I guess that depends on your values as a leader, but not many agree with his logic.
@@yoboho2568 im in washington and our beaches arent even nice and idiots flocked there all week last week. Not to mention anyone on Eastside that is a trump lover refuses to listen to governor. They think if the country isnt shut down then everything is fine. I literally had one yell "cure is worse than the disease" when i asked him how he was feeling. The 2 largest generations alive right now r really botching this
Remember the 1930s!!!. Don't cause an economic meltdown. A balancing act is needed. Over 70 million people died of starvation because of the great depression. Don't think it can't happen again!!
Lots of love to Italy from Australia!!! Io Greco!
2:40min the guy left hanging trying to cheers his wine 🤣🤣
My eyes are getting tears then I can't imagine about them

Listening 2 those adorable little girls and what they are doing staying in touch lifted my exhausted spirits 2day , I work in a care home and although no one is sick with it all the new procedures are mentally, physically exhausting. So the kids lifted my spirit , back 2 it 2morrow .

These ppl aren’t relatable. A CFO at a large company?? Really abc?
it's the host's cousin, they talked to other people with normal jobs too
Well, this virus seems to be the great equalizer. It impacts (only in medical terms) everyone whatever, whoever you are. But I do agree that it is maybe to some extent, "easier" on those that have better means than most of us
Did you listen to the piece? Foreign correspondent isn't able to get into Italy ... because of the coronavirus. Given this, it's pretty commendable that they managed to get such a substantial piece together at all. Moreover, they managed to interview a working class family as well.

They didn't talk to anyone who lost their job, like hundreds of thousands of Australians are about to experience.
So no ABC staff know any commoners in Italy.
Just more of the same from the ABC. they have lived so long in their elitist ghetto, they don't see how unrelatable they are to the people who pay their wages.
@@helicart OK, so what is more relatable then? Channel 9?
God may bless you! Our hearts are with you. Very sad!
Praying for you from Toronto Italy.
God speed to all the health care workers and this afflicted
This will be over one day
We aren't sick but I pulled my kids out of school weeks before the schools closed. We didn't hoard supplies, we chose to stay home by choice. We are introverts and this is the perfect opportunity to rest, enjoying good foods we grew ourselves, exercise, write, listen to music, read and doing the things we've always enjoyed without judgements! Stay safe everyone!!❤😁
Your delusional! This is the time to be reading and studying your Bible, old King James version!⏰ wake up!DREAMER!!!!Amen.
Lovely to read your comment, I wonder if you are vegans, like myself
They have bidets, that's why there's no toilet paper shortage :)
U know u still have to wipe exactly as u normally do BEFORE using the bidet? Haha XD
@@albertoaidala2624 What a disgusting thing to say! Ridiculous, it dampens, cleans, rinses, dries then deodorizes, one doesn't touch such things! God Lord! you SAVAGE!
@@albertoaidala2624 No you don't.
@@Springfairy92 yws you should if you do not want to "spry" and "push aound you genitals" fecal particles. That..is disgusting and dangerous. Are you aware of it? (this happen if you use the Japanese seat, if you use the europena bidet instead you simply cannot use it if you do not wipe before.)
We are all in it! Stay strong Italia 🇮🇹 Hugs 🤗 from Ethiopia 🇪🇹
The violin(or viola) at the beginning is so beautiful! Anyone knows the name of this piece?
