Firstly: the 100,000+ "dead" was of "Other Losses", primarily desertions (as Western Allied personnel increasingly let German POWs out of the camps and back home in large part because they couldn't feed them). Which is one reason why Bacque et. al. (and sources reliant on his BS like Hellstorm) fall apart under close scrutiny.

No, Churchill did not "allow" his soldiers to rape, as shown by the consistent track record of Commonwealth personnel being charged and convicted. Were efforts to do so more spotty or incomplete than they should have been? Sure.

As a Greek I am forever indebted to Churchill for saving my country from Stalin's clutches. In 1944 the communists having brutally destroyed most of other resistance fighters during the Nazi occupation, launched their first coup d'etat attempt to take power by force. It was Churchill's determination at that critical junction and further into the following civil war which saved Greece from falling to communism. I cringe thinking the death toll, the oppression, the depression of being under Stalin's boot. All our Balkan neighbors know first hand what that meant in practice.
I feel angry for this voice with Indian accent making these false claims and as a matter of fact we are in part indebted to the 4th Indian Division and 5th Indian brigade fighting alongside British and Greeks to rid the communist mob. We should erect a monument to those Indians along with Churchill's.

Thing is, the Colonels came to power almost 20 years after the Greek Civil War ended, with their initial victims being other people that fought the communists in the Civil War. So tying the two together is rather dishonest, like the clowns that argue the Weimar Republic led inevitaly to the Nazi Reich. Only there was even less grounds to think so there since Greece enjoyed a fair amount of stability and peace prior to 1967 that Weimar did not.

Winston Churchill was a bigot. Under his rule, Bengal faced one of the worst man-made disasters through Bengal famine of 1943. He was an asshole of highest order and even our worst PMs were way better than the British rule. VP Singh, Rajiv Gandhi were still better than Churchill for us. The British built railways to transport rapidly move raw materials from India and not out of some sense of goodwill. They brought english so that they could proselytise to christianity, not any other reason and if Germany had won the WWII, English wouldn't be the language it is today ( anecdote - Bose and Einstein - A Historic Collaboration). Any positives from British rule are a happy accident and they did absolutely nothing to alleviate poverty in our country and almost everything to aggravate it. Look at what we achieved in last 67 years,(or last 24 especially) you would know the answer if Churchill was right about India. Churchill deserves to be on par with Hitler, or at least mentioned in same breath as Hitler. As Indian, I feel obliged to tell it to everybody I can and hope that the history is rewritten correctly.

They treacherously bombed civilians, discarding their own treaties. Their actions merely destroyed a potential (and very likely) ally against the communists. The germans allowed a great deal of things, freedom of speech apart from communism, ownership of firearms and innovated many quality of life policies you could hardly imagine the present without today. The only thing they did wrong (in the world's eyes) was dare oppose the global financial system, which was the real cause of the war. In spite of the military defeat and the subsequent loss of the propaganda war after the summary execution of everyone willing to oppose, Germany has revolutionised the world in just a few short years while also being embargoed by most of the world.

We know this because Chamberlain signed the deal you talk about, and Hitler continued invading anyway. It was after the retreat of Dunkirk that Churchill took over, by which point most of france had been captured by Hitler. He took on a losing battle, in which the enemy had already shown a custom for going back on their word. By no means was he perfect, but he was certainly not a warmonger, just a Man who recognised a beast in power

When we stopped teaching History as a 'balanced-by-contrary-evidence' subject, through primary schools to university, we laid the foundation of today's chaos.
Many parents, and most teachers, spout received soundbites, without ever studying the events themselves. History should be a core subject. British History, in Britain- warts and beauty spots.
A week or so back, I spoke to a presumably well-educated friend (PhD in mathematics from one of Germany's most praised universities) about the toppling of the statue of Thomas Jefferson. He straight up told me "He was a slave-owner, don't you know?". I was frankly flabbergasted.
This childish tendency to just project modern sensibilities back in time is astounding. It proves that history education is completely lacking.
Obviously the same is happening to Churchill, and in most such cases a good helping of half-truths is mixed in.
Coincidentally, I am currently reading "The Name of The Rose". I think it does a reasonable job at portraying people within their time (though it is probably far from perfect). Many people would do well to read it or similar works, fictional or otherwise.
The lack of perspective is hard to describe...
PS: All Britons, and all Westerners for that part, should look on Churchill as a moral exemplar. For whatever faults he may have had, he clearly exemplified the best of the human spirit. As an Austrian, I shudder to think how Europe and the world would look like without Britain and without Churchill at her helm. He was a brave man than 99% of us in a more desperate time than 99% of us have ever faced.

@@battleborgtv8096 German placed troops in west after after normandy which happpened in june of 1944 while germans offensive ended in 1942 when battle of Stalingrad happened and it ended in febuary of 1943 after which German troops were pushed back in eastern front easily for the rest of the war and german were losing in troop count and hardware and most of their elite troops were wiped in stalingrad.
So no western front were oppened so late in the war it really didn't matter in longterm as germany was losing in eastern front with total defeats nothing they could do anymore could save them..... heck even french freedom fighters didn't really damage germanys war effort only just damaged their grip on France.

I asked my mum, who was bombed out of her house twice and watched the London docks burn night after night, why Churchill was so important. She said it was inspiration - he inspired a nation standing alone, bombed to pieces, hungry and tired to fight on. The British didn't give in because Churchill had the ability to unite a sentiment of freedom from tyranny. God knows what he would make of the country today
My grandparents said the same thing. My grandad was in a UXB squad in London. He was the only one who made it out alive and carried a shrapnel injury until he died.
Ask your mum if she enjoyed feasting on ration stockpiles that would have otherwise alleviated the famine in Bengal at that time.

Churchill’s comments on Indians referred to the caste system. His mistakes in Gallipoli and the Bengal famine may be unforgivable, however consider that this was in context of his responsibilities, probably the greatest ever in the world, during the greatest catastrophes to ever occur to humanity. He was very decisive to point he destroyed French ships with sailors on them for fear Vichy would reach some compromise with Hitler and give the ships to the Reich. Context of Churchill’s decisions was truly that western civilization was falling to the rule of Hitler and the Japanese. Thank you Voltaire for this clarification of the Bengal famine, which is an education I have not received elsewhere.

Technology? The British empire constructed railways in India so that they could transport its resources and strip it of its wealth.
Democracy? Britain itself didnt even have democracy, and during the empire years was undergoing a long process of democratisation. But what about introducing democracy to the colonies you ask; although Hong Kong is today remembered as a bulwark of democracy, us Brits didn't introduce it until the handover were looming and closer cultural and economic ties needed to be created with the West.
Civilisation? This is the worst one. It assumed that these places were somehow uncivilized before colonization. Africa had literal kings and queens, take a look at the Kingdom of Benin. They had their own vibrant, colourful cultures that were extinguished by colonists.
So what did we really give to them? Nothing but pain and suffering in pursuit of wealth for the West, something the education system always conveniently leaves out.

As a german myself I can not really understand why we need to "thank Churchill" for anything. I am not exactly making him responsible for the terror bombings, it was war and germany did some pretty awful stuff as well (even the "terror bombing" part, if you look at for example Rotterdam) but that doesn't mean we have to be grateful. Both Hitler and Churchill (and Stalin ofc) were more than willing to accept civilian casualties to achieve their war goals. You can not possibly be grateful to those men.

I did an entire project in him when I was 10 years old. Then spent my entire time in secondary school and in life defending what I learned. Spent so much time learning the nonsense people would lie about and then debunking it. His ability to learn from mistakes and ability to change his mind is what made him Great. No different to any human who has such a long political life when the biggest most significant things have happened. He lived through the worst parts of humanity and lead it out of the Darkness.

Churchill is and always will be a hero one of if not the greatest Briton ever. People should look up to him for his courage, strength, determination and wisdom. He made the hole house of commons support him and he rallied the entire nation to fight the germans and not surrender to them. The man saved the free world, saved Europe and Weston way of life he made compromises with working with Russia so he could stop a greater threat and then after the war he was one of the men who criticized the Soviet union. Maybe he was only good as a war time prime minister but he was the prime minister the world needed at the time and he showed that with his tremendous courage to stand up to Hitler refuse to hold peace talks and ultimately he was one of the men who saved the world. We owe our way of life to him and I hope that God has laid his soul to rest well in heaven as one of this globes greatest heros.
