This is my all time favorite Santana lineup which got even better when they added Leon Thomas on vocals and percussion not long after this. Two great keyboard players, Armando, Chepito, Michael on drums, and the GREAT Doug Rauch on bass, who blew me away when I was a teenager watching him play. There was so much energy and intensity and it was all channeled in Carlos' playing , which was out of this world, even by his standards.
Great also that during these months they were still playing Stone Flower all the way through.

Man this is good. So raw and skilful. These guys were true musicians and no matter how many times I listen to Santana from this era I never bet bored. I don't bother with the new albums Which just cannot compete with the early 70's line up.

It makes absolutely no sense that Carlos dropped "The Eternal Caravan Of Reincarnation, "Waves Within", and "All The Love Of The Universe" and played Castillos De Arena Parts 1&2, Batucada, A-1 Funk, Free Angela, and other tracks that had nothing to do with Caravanserai!
To this day, I believe the group should have performed the whole "Caravanserai album and then sone encores of "Incident At Neshabur and Tousssnt L'Overture

Carlos playing, after playing & touring with McLaughlin at his highest level during this period. Backed up by what he has said was his strongest musicianship line up, several virtuoso's in their own right like Shrieve and Dougie both toured played with DiMeola and JMJ himself. And of course every step of the way the pinnacle, the mona lisa of Santana's work, touching the clouds, written by MS.

What a Wonderful performance! Back in the days when musicians were extremely gifted, creativity was just sparkling all around, and ideas for songs came from unknown still mysterious sources. The sound quality isn't the best but still great and with this quality of music, no matter the format, It is easy to hear the tremendous quality in performance. Santana never played like that anymore after the 70s decade went away, this is the best time, the way they played, that Hammond, guitars, all just a perfect fusion, I wish this kind of music would come back again ! Thanks for the Upload, what a Jewel !!!!

Carlos Santana's Guitar playing became very stale by this point!
He was trying to be Mahavishnu John McLaughlin!
Just listen to his redundant playing on "Samba Pa TI"!
Carlos never topped his playing on both "Santana III" and "Caravanserai"!
He still had Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon with him though.
Let's face it, when Gregg Rolie left Santana, Santana ceased to exist.

      Sorry. That's just not true.
Neil Schon was not a good fit for Santana after his Teenage phenom years with Carlos. Schon wanted his own band. Good for him. BUT....
Neal Schon turned into a coke fiend during his Journey Days. I was there at his second live Journey show at UCSB with Robin Trower in 1975. Neal Schon did so much blow he "Gaked" out on Cocaine
on stage and they had to pick him up off the floor after he fell back into his Marshall Stacks. And finish the set barely.
And, yes Carlos and Mahavishnu Music was fantastic guitar playing.
      Infact, in Jimi Hendrix's biography
"Electric Gypsy" Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa were blown away with their playing and Jimi died before his recording sessions to do what they were doing FUSION Rock music.

That year Santana band came to Mexico City and could not play because the government, a repressive brainless people and political and social sistem didn’t let him play. The show moved to Puebla city. There were two shows one day. The fact was that the profesional news papers press attended the Santana conference at the hotel. But Santana, all in white and with very short haired cancel the press conference because “he had to meditate and get in tune with the universe and”…a lot of fake talk, sent the Mexican press to hell, they were working. At night at the hotel there were a little reunion into his suite room and finally he kept two Mexico American girls with him. I asked him that if we could share them but told me that he was going to sleep. I was playing a pedal organ outside the suite 🎉

    @Algerien Gay,
I really cannot thank you enough for sharing the magnificent live Santana music of 1973 through these astounding concert recordings. Whenever I am feeling low I listen to one of them - my personal favourite [yes, I'm English!!] is the Salt Lake recording you published - and I feel my soul being replenished. One thing that occurs to me is just how amazing Chepito's performances are: he is on record as saying he didn't like playing this music much but for me he is the stand-out performer. The Band lost its heart imho when he left and Richard Kermode and Doug Rauch sadly didn't stay too long with the group. Thank you again!

      Hi Tony,
I saw Santana live during this period and Chepito always managed to have a good time on stage. If he didn't enjoy playing this more intricate style, he sure didn't let his displeasure show when they were on stage. His hair was very long in '73 and I'll always remember his hair flying around while he'd entertain the ladies sitting toward the front with a big smile on his face ! He had a great stage presence and energetic persona.

@@jimdep6542 Hey Jim, Thank you SO MUCH for posting this reply 👏👏👍👍, I agree with everything you say. SUCH a shame he went off of the rails in recent times it seems. He did appear with some of the original members of the band in a group called Abraxas Pool, stunning music and he was still a star in my eyes back then. And the Salt Lake City concert I mentioned in my previous post is now deleted, life is so tough 😭😭, all the best Jim!!

    Hey Jazz/Rock fans!
You want to listen to a truly original mind blowing Guitar player, go on RUclips and listen to Chick Corea's Return To Forever - "Return To Forever With Bill Connors Live In Massachusetts September 2,1973"/"Back To The Previous"!
This is when Bill Connors was a member of Return To Forever.
Bill Connors phrasing was otherworldly and very inventive!
As far as improvisation, Bill Connors would blow Mahavishnu John McLaughlin away!
Sadly, he left Return To Forever before they became very popular and became an Acoustic Guitar player.

I just don't understand why Carlos Santana didn't just perform the whole "Caravanserai" album during that 1972 ~ 1973 tour!
Carlos' playing really lost that special Latino sound at this point!
He tried to be Mahavishnu John and he could never be McLaughlin!
Just listen to the doodling on "Every Step Of The Way"!
    He wasn't a speedster!
He just had to play the old hits and a bunch of new material that had nothing to do with "Caravanserai"!
He should have just played the whole "Caravanserai" album and then play the hits as encores!
Let's face it, when Carlos lost Gregg Rolie, Santana ceased to exist.

    • @raulmacias1311
      @raulmacias1311 2 года назад

      You are absolutely right!
Carlos' playing is really stale and repetitive! It is very unfocused!
You see, Carlos was trying to be Mahavishnu John McLaughlin and he just wasn't capable of even approaching McLaughlin!
Gone were the inventive "Latino" riffs and melodies like on the May 1,1971 Montreux gig!
When Gregg Rolie left Santana, Santana truly ceased to exist!
I only listen to the first four Santana albums ~
      Santana ~ 1969
      Abraxas ~ 1970
      Santana ~ 1971
      Caravanserai ~ 1972
      You know, it's truly weird!
When Carlos Santana cut his hair after the release of the "Caravanserai" album and while on tour in New York City, New York, he became like Samson!
      Gone was Carlos Santana!
We now had Devadip Carlos Santana Sri Chinmoy devotee and a mediocre, uninventive Guitar player!
      He lost his power!
