Pigs in a Box?

  • When do pigs come in a box? What do grass farmers do in the winter? These and other burning questions are answered in this video! We go to pick up our pork cuts from the butcher and unpack them at the farm. I show you some of our pastured pork cuts and explain how the butcher's schedule for pigs works. Then, we clean up the farm for winter, putting away temporary fencing, hoses, feeders, drinkers, and chicken tractors. Finally, I visit with the Dexter cattle and fill their mineral feeder.

    My Brother works at the locker in town, and I haul cattle for them occasionally. Covid has stressed the system in our area particularly hard. The locker has people calling from over 100 miles away to order pork and beef. They had to stop scheduling butcher services to new customers. Meaning only established customers could bring in livestock or schedule to have their animals slaughtered.

    Jeez, I don't know if I can ask this question. In Canada (I ive in Québec) you can't sell meat direct to the customer if it hasn't been harvest in a certified slaughterhouse and has a stamp that it has been inspected. If you can, I envy you. At the slaughterhouse where I did work, the inspector was a veterinary, though I don't know if others trades entitled to give that stamp exist.
    At 70 I think it's too late to make that move to the land, but watching your videos send me into nice reveries. No need to be bitter.

    • @printaboul
      @printaboul 3 года назад +1

      Sorry, I did not wait till the end of the video to ask my question, and you did answer later. I thought of delete the question but, I said to my self, let you know, and a few others, that it might be better to watch till the end before reacting. And about your jokes, I understand english but less often do I understand the punch of a joke.

    It's good to see the seasons change and the chore schedules rotate. Season's are such a wonderful depiction of the peace that comes from nature's routines, yes? I happened to come across another channel that had such an interesting title that it stopped me in my tracks and I had to watch it. The title of the video was "How Joel Salatin brings out the "Pigness" of the Pig". Have you ever heard of him? He has a very different setup from yours, but I thought you might find this interesting as well, if you haven't seen it already. I thought of you as he discussed his experience with pigs and how he raises them, so I thought I'd share it with you in case you would be interested in checking it out. Pigs are so wonderful.
