Lol, Elin, you have to laugh! When it rains, it pours! But, the pendulum does swing and your good fortune will be back very soon. In the end, you fixed every issue and onward you go. Well done Elin! 👍
A $7 gasket that doesn't leak is a better value than a $1 gasket that does! 😮 I believe I read somewhere that Rimmer and Moss have merged or formed some sort of cooperative arrangement, so whatever parts you get from one are very likely to be the same parts from the other. Here's hoping The Roadster Factory gets back up to full function soon! But ev en without TRF, and with some parts being less than ideal, we are very fortunate to be able to source parts for 50, 60, 70 year old cars! Imagine trying to fix a 2024 Tesla, Accord or F150 in fifty years!
My TR6 became my daily driver for a few weeks after my Jeeps both broke. It was the first time I really relied on the TR, and I loved it. It was more dependable than I thought it would be, running errands and short trips and commuting. I really picked a gem.
Hi Elin, We've all been there. Re the spin on oil filter unit, there were a few posts on UK forums about similar issue. My own one was difficult to get oil tight. There is an issue with the outer and inner o ring grooves. A straight edge across the unit might show different heights. A re designed unit is out now where the inner o ring seat is spring loaded to take into account variations in machining of the mating faces. Enjoy all of your content.
Same experience: The gasket you can buy individually failed on me several times. What finally did the trick was the gasket included in the standard Oilfilter element GFE131 from Rimmer....
That ordeal was certainly enough to make a saint swear ! As for gaskets and also rubber bushes, I hear a lot of engineering techs, mechanics etc saying it's getting more and more difficult to find good quality replacements at any price unless you're lucky enough to find some well stored 'new old stock.
Hi Elin. When you only have one vehicle only one can break down. When you are using more than one they can all break down at the same time. Ask me how I know. In regards to those rubber oil gaskets I try to leave them in place. All my old cars still have the cartridge canisters. New rubber gaskets come with the filter element but I rarely change the gasket. I am so afraid that they won’t seal so I leave the old one in place. Not always but most of the time.
That's just how it goes sometimes Elin. I am probably wrong, but I have a theory about "rubber" parts and gaskets nowadays. I don't think they actually are rubber, they are some form of plastic imitation which does not do the job. I have had new gaskets fail for no reason. With some parts, and I expect that housing to be the same. so much force is exerted by tightening that the gasket rips up, particularly if there is a twisting motion as well. Sometimes you have to fit it all together loose, run it up, and tighten just enough to stop it leaking.
Nevertheless, you squeezed in trouble shooting the drippy adapter. I have a similar problem with the oil canister style filter on my Stag. My solution was to stack two of the soft gaskets in the channel. Not sure if that will work for future drippy adapters.
I ordered those seal kits from different places, and they were quite different, they also don't all contain the alloy washers that is supposed to go under the head of the long bolt, one came from BPNW, and the other from B.A.T. in Florida, they get theirs from MOCAL in the UK, who make the spin on filter kit. (Those from Moss are not up to the job, I don't buy anything from Rimmers anu longer because so much of their stuff is bad quality)
Elin I feel your pain regarding the gasket. It’s not just gaskets, but all reproduction rubber products seem to be of cheaper quality, and of questionable dimensions.
(Guessing approximately how much a repetitive off-the-road strip down oil leak repair must cost), I’m sure “splashing out” $7 in the first place to make a durable fix is well worth the outlay. Let’s get a few to keep in stock Elin! 😁👍🇬🇧
Wow! Sometimes if it wasn't for bad luck we wouldn't have any luck at all. Glad you got everything sorted. It would have been a real bummer if you had to fix your truck outside in the snow. There seems to be more and more complaints about the quality of Moss parts. I guess that's what happens when a company is run by bean counters.
Back in 2015, I had two BMW 3 series, a 2002 and 2007, each with about 150 000 miles. Within two weeks, they both broke down 3 times. Gave up and traded both in, buying one Toyota and leasing another. You’re lucky to have the skills to fix almost anything.
Unfortunate combination of failures, but a least we got to see a bit of the ‘mystery’ Jeep that unfortunately disappeared from the channel ! It looks like when it was put back into use a few hidden weaknesses got provoked into failure ? I’d like to see an update and review on it, especially if Nick can be persuaded to do some presentation !
Well, it does sound like your luck has changed and the worst is behind you. That oil-filter adapter gasket seems troubling. How could two smooth metal surfaces tear up a gasket that severely in a localized area? I could understand if the thinner gasket underwent compression deformation, but the damage at 17:40 is torn, and you said that it was at the same place as the other gasket. I hope the problem is solved, but I wish it was possible to understand the underlying cause of the failure. In any case I hope thing run more smoothly for you now, Elin, and we will be awaiting some new triumphs in your efforts to make driving fun again.
@@serralheirosaoroque1599 The truck… absolutely. I neglected it, I admit! The lincoln suspension was all rebuilt last winter and then followed up in the summer and not by me, by a suspension shop. So that is just cheap parts…. The Jeep…. It is just an old age. How do you maintain a crank position sensor, a radiator or an alternator? So I partially agree with you but it is not ALL my fault. And of course, everything breaks I don’t expect everything to last forever, it is just frustrating when it happens all at the same time.
You rant away if you feel the need we all know and share your frustration. Letting it out is good for your sanity. Bottling it up won't do you any good at all. Now back to the spanners. 😂😂😂
Seems like Moss Motors have supplied a lot of substandard repackaged crap (Miata panels ?) but Elin and Cheftush keep using them and therefore promoting them…..
Always happy to hear ALL your car stories!
Lol, Elin, you have to laugh!

You're not old enough to have that much trouble with your joints 😀 Glad you finally made it home OK from the States!

Boy that ball joint was DRY! Like they say when it rains it pours! Glad to see you got everything fixed!
It's like in England, we wait 1 hour for a bus and 3 show up at the same time😂
Very lucky that ball joint didn’t give out on the highway!
We have all had weeks like this.... God bless.

Sometimes when you think you're having a bad day, just know that there are people out there that wish they had your problems in exchange for theirs.

Been wondering where you were, good you're back.
I’ve heard when it rains it pours but to have three ball joints break in one weekend 😂😂

Nice job 👍👍👍😎😎😎
I’ve had a persistent leak on my TR3A that I suspect is from the oil filter adapter. I wonder if the gasket might be the cause?

I have done that as well.

Sometimes it's good to rant, Elin
Hope you checked all the other ball joints while you were replacing the arm.

THIS IS ALL A LACK OF INSPECTION AND PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.

The gremlins are out working hard.

Looks like it’s been a long time since you last greased that joint. I can see a grease nipple.
Yes it looked a bit dry lol ...well brown and dry. I have never seen a rusty ball joint before.
Zoom putt putt 😮
7$ oil filter gasket please.
bigger is always better - yeah right does not apply to lift kits they cause more problems than there worth
They are or they’re
Now it's all behind you ...we hope a new run of breakdowns are not part of your future !!

You have angered the car gods. Make amends by offering A LOT of 5w30
Life is breaking your balls!
You need to buy a lottery ticket.
Your luck has to change at some point. Right?
