LES COUPLETS DE FOLIES (1701) of Marin Marais (1656 - 1728)
La Folía is one of the oldest, and most recognizable, European melodies. It appeared in print in the 17th century, of older origins yet, and has been subjected to hundreds of treatments by composers. Marin Marais’s Couplets on the theme, thirty-two variations for solo viola da gamba, give extensive work to both the musical material and the instrument (of which Marais was a noted virtuoso).
Recorded at the Chapelle de la Souhaitier, Plouër-sur-Rance (8/8/16)
