I followed your steps exactly and... Eureka!!!, the LED brake lights on my Volvo V50 worked. Thia video has saved my family finances. Thank you very much from Spain. Ramón
Brilliant, thanks a lot, Sir. Just one day before we were to leave for summer holidays with the car, I discovered, that the brake light was dead. The guy at the garage fiddled around with it and said, it would be some contact problem, it would work again but likely not for long. The whole module should be replaced. When I arrived at home, it was already dead again - no surprise given the diode as root cause. I found your video and luckily also a suitable diode in the basement. Fixed according to your instructions, all perfect. Thanks a lot, you safed my day.
I was almost on the trail of figuring out why my LED lights were glowing very faintly. Then, I stumbled upon your video through a bit of googling, which led me to the final solution. As a token of gratitude, I'd like to buy you a drink (Y).
Good evening from Finland. My left brake light went dead. These were excellent service instructions and worked out fine. Saved me about 350-400 euros in spares/workshop. I really appreciate that someone bothers to make this kind of help videos - would like to donate small amount if mr. mitchum advises a channel to do so :).
Thank you so much for this! The garage quoted me over £300 telling me that as they are LEDs I would have to replace the whole unit. Following your video I've done the whole thing in less than an hour for £1. All working great.
Chris you are my Lord for today. In a V50 2007 Facelift it works very well. Nut Nr. 4 ist a bit Tricky, because you cant See it, and in the Video i understand that rhere are Only 3 Nuts. I found Nr4. and your Knowledge works very well. So from Here Germany a big THX.
Thank you Chris, it was exactly for me as demonstrated. Last year I had to pay about 350 Euros for the left side of my car. Now I saw your video and could repair it on the right side by myself. It costs me a 8 cent zener diode and a broken fingernail. Thank you again.
Thanks Chris! Yesterday I was told by my local garage this could be the issue with my v50 and that they know a guy who could fix it. I thought... if they know a guy who can fix it... I can fix it myself and luckily I found your video. I will definitely order those diodes and whip out the ol’ soldering iron 😄👍🏻
My V50 2011 failed the road test because of the LED tail light was not working. Found this video, ordered recommended diode and very easy fix, lights are working perfect now. Only comment to the video is that the light housing is held with FOUR screws, not three... Cheers, and thanks again.
Thanks a tonne Chris! You were spot on to point that a simple 10cent diode was the root cause to the lights not working correctly! Had a bit more challenge in accessing the diodes in a S40 from 2011, as the plastic housing is welded or sealed on top of the LED's. Had to innovative and navigate carefully: wherein I used a soldering gun to make a groove to melt the plastic just enough to take out the LED's and change that one annoying little diode! And Voila its working again.
Awesome, I am glad this is helping so many people. it is just frustrating being forced to rely on aq dealer or repair shop when you can take the financial stress part out and just do it yourself. your wallet will thank you!! lol
I have similar Volvo V50. I managed successfully to replace the diode. I spent 0.5h until I discovered one important aspect. Specifically there is shown in the video location of the tree nuts. But actually there are four nuts. After you unscrew the nut number four then the tail light can be easily removed. Another thing is that the socket wrench with shorter arm than shown in the picture was very useful and reached to every location. Thank you for the video. It was very helpful!
Ah, You're right about 4 not 3 nuts. lol I think one was missing when I was filming and that's why I didn't catch that. the socket I used was the shorter one but used a swivel adapter to get in to that difficult nut out. I'm glad this helped you out.
The last nut is hidden and difficult to catch with camera. All together the video was very helpful! Saved some money (replacing the taillight instead) and time. Thanks a lot!
@@joecguitartuition8371 I pulled the light apart, found the diode and swapped it for the same one as Chris quoted in this video. I can't remember the exact process of doing it but that suggests I didn't have any dramas. I remember being happy at saving £££
Thanks for this great posting!! I too got told I needed to replace the whole taillight unit by the dealership for my 2012 plate V50. Thanks to you I got 10 diodes for 99p, job done with just one of them!! Thanks again.
you are completely welcome. no monetary thanks needed. I have worked in the automotive business and know how much of a shock it can be sometime for repairs and this is my way of helping others. Enjoy your new brake lights!! lol
My Volvo V50 has 4 nuts as well. Any equivalent diode 1N400x will work. I replace with 1N4004 instead of 1N4007 and all is good. Thank you very good posting which saved me hundreds of pounds.
Great video. Just trying it now. I'll let you know if it works. Just one thing, you can actually manipulate the circuit boards out without removing the unit or the weather seal :)
Thanks for the question. there are no brake light bulbs on the lower portion of the assembly.this portion is for the turn signals., fog and running lights.
From what i can find it looks like the 2018 v40 has bulbs and not LED. I think you just need to open the panels on either side of the trunk area near the Brake lights and you should be able to pop out the light cluster and see. See this link. This should help. Best of luck. www.volvocars.com/uk/support/manuals/v40/2017w17/maintenance-and-service/lamps/lamp-replacement---direction-indicators-rear-brake-lights-and-reversing-lamp
Thanks so much for the helpful tip! Just fixed my brake lamp in around 30min for the little cost of the solder kit and pack of diodes. Btw, had no previous experiance soldering and learned via youtube videos (ruclips.net/video/6rmErwU5E-k/видео.html).

Massive thanks for this video Chris! This worked for me. For future viewers: The 4th nut is at the top of the lower section 👍
Legend! Fixed our brake light and passed the MOT!
Absolutely perfect guide, straight to the point! I was able to fix LED brake light on my V50 finally today. Thank you very much Chris!
absolutely,

Thanks Chris. Just used this video to repair my high level brake light which was dim. Replaced the diode and it is now as good as new.
This works on the high brake light too? How do you do that?

Thanks for the explanation
Thanks for this video, it helped me a lot and it was fun job:)
On my 2012 volvo V50 I had four 10mm M6 nuts holding the housing!
Chris the lower brake lights were`nt working on the video.. or is the video about repairing the upper ones only?
Thanks for the question. there are no brake light bulbs on the lower portion of the assembly.this portion is for the turn signals., fog and running lights.
How about the normal back light, those are normal bulbs right?
They Should be standard bulbs.
Would it be similar for a 2018 Volvo V40 ?

I fixed mine today, but I noticed that you don't have to undo the 3 nuts, but just unscrew the 4 screws and the circuit boards will slide out easily.
Right on,
I did not notice that. Very nice... :)
