RIP Brain Macloud , he was my first Guitar hero and a genuine musician . I got to do sound for Headpins when they got back together ( original line up ) around 1989 ish . The first thing I did was go ask Brian about his Amp settings and he was the guy the stories were all comprised from . He had Hi Watt 100 watt heads with volume treble and Mids cranked full to ten and the bass turned to zero . That’s how he got that amazing Guitar Sound and the name ‘too LOUd Macloud’ .
Haha, that is super interesting! Good to know that little story. Its a brave thing to just crank mids and treble without some structured ground. Perhaps he mellowed some of it out with the tone control and volume knobs on the guitar etc, it actually derives an epiphany for me. Thank you.
HiWATT 100s were bassier than MARSHALLS to start with. I had a tube version back in the 80s I wouldn't dare turn it up to 10. My lord it cost $100 to retube which I did a few times.
This is one of my fave bands and fave songs. Brian and Bill wrote this killer song loaded with a great guitar riff, incredible vocal layering and perfect harmonies. When I first heard this, it reminded me of Todd Rundgren-produced/Hall & Oates' War Babies album. Bill's voice is off the charts ,(and no autotune. Imagine that! ) Thanks for the great music and memories.
Great song ...that extended lead guitar break gives me goosebumps...man that's some beautiful playing ...Brian had the gift ...😢😂😂...wow!!! Thanks Bill for all the kind words about Brian 😊
Great tune. I miss those days but not dragging my Fender Rhodes around. Bill Henderson is still in great voice and seems like a really nice guy. Thanks for posting.
I thank heaven for this song. Not because I think it is their best, but because it gave them the exposure needed for me to discover this group and listen to their amazing catalog. "Fly At Night" is phenomenal and should be in rotation along side of the customary standards played on classic rock radio by Rush, Heart, Zeppelin, Floyd, etc.
Saw Chilliwack in my hometown Grand Falls-Windsor Newfoundland on tour just after Brian had joined the band. Have been a lifelong fan of Chilliwack since the Dreams, Dreams,Dreams album. Thanks for the backstory Bill. Have a great summer!
Saw Bill Henderson and Chilliwack at Rock Fest in Edmonton last night . They were amazing . Bill is one of my absolute fave Canadian music performers . Saw him 52 years ago with Procul. Harum at Edmonton’s Kinsmen Fieldhouse, my first ever rock concert!
First off Bill H. is a incredible musician as kids we heard the song Lonesome Mary' and thus began our journey into learning Guitar The double LP CHILLIWACK is still one of our playlist as is the early work of the COLLECTORS Way back, i met Brian M. many years ago and talked about Guitars and early Amps He was brilliant on so many levels, we were invited to his Boat at the the time is was tied up by the Bayshore Inn @ Coal Harbour Vancouver sadly we got busy and didn't go, his death a few years later is one of the greatest losses for Rock & Roll in Canada Thank you Bill H. and a Big Thanks to boom 97.3
In most cases...the story of Canadian Rock! We have had a lot of fantasic talent over the years that made a spark but fell through the cracks before the flame caught. So many...and us the losers for it!
In my public school days our grade 7-8 teacher had our classes go on a early spring survival trip camping in cabins that were not winterized . We did all kinds of survival activities . We had to plan our week of supplies . At the end of our week we had the pleasure of CHILLIWACK playing for us. That was my first concert. It was a great one . Thanks CHILLIWACK.
Loved this song since I was a kid and always wanted to hear the backstory from Bill...... I’m sure there’s much more he wanted to tell . Brian Macleod was inspirational.🤘
@@penzman Canadian Rock power ! Add Max Webster and Rush to that . Chillowack and Headpins Bryan Adams were the west coast sound out Little Mountain studio , Rush Mac Webster , Triumph were East Coast sound .
Yes, Camille. I used to be friends with her in Vancouver. She worked as a composer and lyricist for Nettwork Records during and after her stint with Sarah McLaughlin. Her elder sister, Saffron, has sung background for Paul Rogers (Free & Bad Company) and others. Their mother is a professional photographer. I remember this song and a couple others from Chilliwack with joy. What a fun and vibrant time in the Canadian (Rock/New Wave/Alternative Pop) music industry! A very talented and friendly and aesthetically attractive family, the Hendersons! 😊
The song almost sounds like in the vein of The Doors's, "Touch Me Babe", almost hearing the Ray Manzarek inspired organ riff. The Gone Gone Gone Part almost mimics Manzarek's keyboard riff.
Wow did not expect to see that headline! Grew up with their Opus X record, didn't find out about this song til much later, probably added to a cd as a bonus track or something along the way. My parents wedding song was Midnight
Song is dope. I'm gonna remake it for fun. Film Board of Canada: let's make a show where we remake these amazing cuts, and create something new from what we learn.
I'm surprised this was a hit. It's ambitious and intricate and dynamic. There's so much talent and ability and creativity on display. Songs this good don't usually become hits.
Losing Brian McLoud is one of the greatest musical losses of my generation, much like the loss of Jeff Porcaro. It still upsets me and I only knew them as a fan.
Brian "Too Loud" Macleod, one of Canada's greatest guitarists, superb musician, producer and arranger. Such an amazing talent and gone far far too soon.
That song STILL is one of the catchiest around, 37 years later.
OMG it's like 1981 back again ! Great times...
One of the best songs to ever come from Canada.
Was COREY HART Canadian?
SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT was pretty good. And don't forget ALDO NOVA
Cory is Canadian, yes.
From where you are ?
Awesome humble man with talent for a melody that is next level!
Oh my God how I loved that song and still do!!!
Heard this on SiriusXM on Yacht Rock Radio the other day. One of my favorite songs from 1981.

Is Fly at Night on the same record as My Girl?
@@M4R1N4 - No, "Fly At Night"was a few years earlier in the 70's.
@@shyman99 Thanks, I found it and it sounds good. Gonna try to find a copy - not so easy in Ohio! eBay here I come :)
I loved that song way back then, took me yrs to find out how's deeply admired by Canadians, even younger fans
Happy memories. One of my favourite bands growing up.
This was/is an epic tune! I still play on our radio station in Chelan, WA!
One of the first albums I bought as a kid. I actually bought it at the record department of Zellers.
that's Canadian bro...Zellers record rack
Most Canadian comment here… did you go over to Shoppsy’s after ?

Just heard this on the radio in Winnipeg. I probably hear it at least once daily while surfing thru the channels.

I hadn't heard this song for over thirty years, but then I saw an old SCTV sketch on youtube last year and there it was. Such a great, catchy song.
Recess Monkeys rock this catchy little number. All hail John Candy.

Looking good & positive attitude. Women love that. At least I do. He aged well!

Next time, turn the music down 3 or 4db.

The fact he doesn't mention The Recess Monkeys even once is a huge let down.
