RIP Hal. I saw him live in Elmira NY. My hometown and where Mark Twains buried. He did an amazing job of playing Twain. The mayor of the city at the time gave him a key to the city as a thank you.

He received multi awards for the theater presentations of Mark Twain Tonight including several Tony awards an Emmy for the TV Special. The Oscars are for motion pictures - and while he acted in movies his focus was the theater (nearly 2500 performances of Mark Twain Tonight - the longest running one-man show in theatrical history.. His legacy is Twain. And he wasn't a conservative - he was a very balanced liberal who believed in the eye opening words of Twain - words that are now over 150 years old yet still relevant today. And with the decline in our education systems these are words that are lost on too many young people.

I was fortunate to see Hal Holbrook perform as Mark Twain twice. Once in 2006 and again in 2009. One of my best friends, who got me interested in 'Mark Twain Tonight,' joined me in 2009. I'm glad he had the chance to see him too. Now, he's on God's celestial stage where, I'm sure, he's still carrying on as Twain. Perhaps, he got to meet the real Mark Twain up there. Thank you, Mr. Holbrook.

Hal Holbrook was great in 'Into the Wild' (Academy Award Nomination for Best Male Supporting Actor 2008, but he lost out to Spaniard Javier Bardem in 'No Country for Old Men', and Philip Seymour Hoffman was also nominated for the superb 'Charlie Wilson's War'), but I remember HAL best in a couple of fun horror movies, like George A. Romero's/Stephen King's 1982 'Creepshow' (with plenty of cameos, like Adrienne Barbeau, John Carpenter's then wife), based on the 1950s EC comic magazines. Also, he starred as the priest in said Carpenter's 1980 'The Fog', where he played a priest against Adrienne Barbeau (who played the DJ). And do I need to mention him in his role as Mark Felt/"Deep Throat" in 'All the President's Men' (Alan J. Pakula, 1976)? Both Mark Felt and Hal Holbrook died aged 95. Requiescant In Pacem, and say HI! to the other HAL....

Yes, it really was 1967, by which time colour TVs were selling like hotcakes in the US. By the end of 1965, more than half of the three networks' shows were available in colour. Even in the UK, the first colour broadcast was in July 1967 on BBC2, though it took longer to catch on there. As to his aged appearance, Holbrook simply did a great job on his makeup. When you get a chance, take a look at Dustin Hoffman in "Little Big Man", playing a 121-year-old man at the age of 33. Astonishing.

I've spent way too much time tonight watching basically this same performance, and have been wondering how he got those wattles like that in '67 - did he always have them, or just have a genius makeup artist?
PS - I suspect Holbrook has lived longer because the actual Twain was... "hard on himself" would be putting it mildly, if his commentary is to be believed.

Sure he did. Holbrook would be the first to tell you that he doesn't write anything for "Mark Twain Tonight"; it's all Twain's work. Holbrook only decides what he'll include in any given show.
As to the details, most of this scene is slightly adapted from Twain's 1903 essay, "The Damned Human Race", along with parts of other essays as well. For instance, "its function is to obey orders" comes from "Papers of the Adam Family". The words are mostly verbatim in each case.

I put several humans in a cage and did not intervene, and they formed a village council and erected a shelter and planted flowers around the perimeter.

Animals fight for territory defense or to eat, too. But humans have developed
extra things to fight over they shouldn't--if they get too 'centric over belief
or non-belief choices, race, etc., often because leaders lead or mislead the public
into it, things they might better settle another
way. Police and military can minimize crime, but humans also commit war atrocities. (See
