its sad and good and a mix feelings that geonodes had been blender priority nowadays but had little to show on ui improvements for artists using the viewport and manually manipulating objects. hope thier is a balance for it. dont get me wrong i love geonodes.

I think you faced a bug: in the last part you created an "input group" node by pulling the geometry input socket back, and the result didn't work (it didn't restore the original mesh in 3D viewport). Infact you had to recreate the same node setup in a new file. Could you report it as a bug for your current blender version?
