Out of all the videos on RUclips about Swissy’s, this must be the most accurate description of the breed.

This is my favorite breed thus far. I've had many dogs but the GSMD is the best of all characters. But, I have to say that they are very, very loud when they bark. They don't bark they roar. Or maybe only mine does. I love my dog Sven. He's a 65 kilogram/135 pound dog and just loves to be anywhere I go or my kids go. He's very protective but without any aggression in his body. They need attention, like to be inside, not inside the dog and arent kenneldogs. They are very social so u do not want to keep in kennel. They do not like strangers to pet them right away. With Sven, my dog, I ask people that enter my home to first just ignore him until he comes to u. Otherwise he will bark.

      Welcome Nadia and Sven!!
Thank you very much for sharing this with us. We love reading about our viewers and their beloved paw friends.
It is clear that Sven is a great member of your family and that you take very good care of him (Looks gorgeous in your profile pic). It is very important, as you say, to know your own dog in order to guarantee the safety of the rest.
It is a pleasure that you have seen our video, we hope you have enjoyed it.

@@ABC_animal_kingdom To paraphrase what I understood in the video, Swissies are good/ok with strangers that have been welcomed into the house. That's good. We don't want family or friends attacked. But what about a real intruder? If my wife is home by herself and some crazy or drugged up person tries to break in,and calls the Swissies bluff, will they actually protect? I know somebody in a neighboring state that was at work when somebody tried to break into his house despite the fact that they had what they described as 2 teenaged German Shepherds in the house. Turns out the intruder was so high on drugs he didn't even know where he was. Now his wife is more ablebodied than my wife, and we both live in a part of the USA where armed self defense is allowed, but still, we don't really want it to come to that, and we ain't sure how well my wife could handle/control my Mossberg. Thankfully we live in what's considered a low crime area, but still, times they are a changing.

@tritchie6272 We are very sorry for the delay... It sometimes happens that responses go unnoticed, since they are not notified in the same way as the first comment... 💔
There is no unequivocal way of knowing how they are going to behave in a situation like that. Without a doubt, if they hear noises like breaking glass and see an unknown face... AT LEAST they will bark at them, and it certainly won't be in a friendly way... But they won't necessarily attack them.

      Hi Deb!!
Their origins are very interesting, as are those of the Saint Bernard. We can't wait to see in detail the relationship between this incredible dog and the Rottweiler.
We hope that both you and your beautiful kittens are doing great!

      Wilkommen Wolfgang Lingner!!

Oh tell me again about stubbornness 😂 Mine was a GSMD/Malemute mix! Literally three options of trail, one I heard chainsaws and of course, he wanted to go that way! I tried the other two, NO! I said, 'one of the other two or we go home! He turned around and went home😂

Is this dog breed good for beginners with a little bit of expierence? The famliy of my wife had dogs, but we didnt have one of our own. My wife trained a little bit with 1 of their dogs.

      Welcome Joeday and wife !!
On the one hand, although they are athletic dogs, Great Swiss Mountain dogs only need a moderate amount of activity to exercise their big bodies and Swissies' short, thick double coat is easy to groom.
On the OTHER hand, Swissies are large, muscular, and heavy-boned dogs with incredible physical strength. If we add to this that they have bold, self-confident personalities and can be stubborn, little training at early stages can mean a big problem later.
So... We have to say they are not a good choice for inexperienced or first time dog owners. BUT if you begin training and socializing your Greater Swiss mountain dog from the moment you get them and you don't let their size intimidate you... GSMD are gentle, friendly, and loving dogs.
We hope that our answer is very useful to you. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask. Blessings!

Some of the most suitable breeds as mobility service dogs include: Labrador and golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dogs, St. Bernards.
We know that this information is not enough at all, so if you would like we can make a video (for Sunday 26th of February) about mobility service dogs, regarding what aspects to take into account when choosing one and so on.
