It depends on the coin some recent proof coins like the platinum jubilee sovereigns were 585 but now sell for 850 + most don't though do your research is my advice
There are some exceptions as you say the jubilee sovereign had increased in value, but the recent memorial and coronation I've seen sell graded for less than RRP. But yes research is key and a lot don't do that.
Awesome video island! Certainly some great points shared. I myself would definitely avoid the Royal Mint proof coins. Expensive and a high chance of milkspots! ✌🏻😊
Yeah agree with that.. until you have a base.. then coins like special design proof sovereigns ...especially if graded PF70 are always going to do well .. like 1989 , 2002 , 2005 , 2012 etc etc I've cancelled my Tudor beast proof set ... and generally won't buy anymore RM silver proofs.. or silver in general ..
I think if you are going to get numi coins then proof sovereigns are a good bet. I've thought about cancelling it, could always follow @backyardbullion and buy them on eBay for like 60 percent of the mints price. Think I keep going and then stop with anymore silver and focus all on gold.
You would have a very hard job getting your hands on one of those sets when there are only 20 of them in existence. Mintage figures play a massive part in coin values as any serious collector knows. Morgan dollars are a fine example of this fact.
I do both. Some coins get bought out quick, and I am partial to the Perth Mint. Don't tell me you would have passed up on the {NZM} GhostBusters limited edition $195.00 usd. It just came out and is going for more than double the original price.
I guess it also depends where you are based. If it's the one I found hanging a quick Google it wouldn't be for me, I don't really like colourised coins. Is it a 1oz coin?
Why on Earth would you consider buying these for the metal value? That's not the point of them at all. No dealer is going to look at a key date Sovereign or modern proof coin and think, "Hm, yes, it sells for this much, but only has this much in metal, so I don't want to pay above that." Most braindead take I've seen.
Agree that most of the time there is some collectable value to these types of coins but I know people that think these are good buys to build their stack. Also if you were to go to a dealer with one of the proof silver coins I'm sure you wouldn't get much over spot if at all of you needed to sell.
great video with good points to consider. buyers should always consider who they'd be selling to when buying a coin. if it's the local coin seller then closest to spot is main consideration. if ebay or online then higher premium coins with lower mintages are ok too. coins obviously have both a bullion aspect and an art aspect. buyers who plan to sell soon after of course will want to consider if the premium on the coin they're buying leaves them any room to be a 3rd party seller or not. if planning to sell online then the ideal buy is a coin with some artistic value (i.e. attractive), lower mintage, and reasonable premium. The 2oz BU Griffins for example sell now for almost double what they sold for back in 2017 when they came out and weren't hard to get. Likewise the Una/Lion bar would be easy to sell online as well and you'd likely make back 3x the premium you originally paid if not more. Of course a rising spot price also helps in that regard.
Thanks, it's always a balancing act with what you buy Vs if/when you want to sell later on. I have tried to sell my Una and the lion bar online and only got some stupid low offers, maybe different now as prices have increased.
My plan is get a mix. I have buffaloes I bought at spot when it was around 12. Those I could take to the LCS. Others I might put on eBay or offer them on RUclips like others are doing.
Hmm for the big silver bars I actually would not count them out if they are the cast 1kg ones as the aim in stacking is gathering weight and people still do buy them, I know they are not CGT exempt but that just means you're doing well if you gain a lot of profit from selling it.
That's all fair but just you be losing out as you paying 20% vat on the way in and then 18% CGT on the way out. Just so much you are giving away to the government.
Nice vid. This is the kind of info I’m looking for, so thanks for the tips. I’ve kept it simple so far, but I’m looking to broaden the range of my stack next year and I found this useful. I’d be also be interested to hear on the kind of pieces you recommend. Thanks 👍
Thanks 🙏. What kind of stuff are you currently stacking? Personally I am stacking Sovereigns and 1/4oz. The quarter have higher premium but I think as gold hopefully increases over the long term that they will be more affordable should I wish to sell rather than a 1oz coin.
@@the_islandstacker Mainly Silver Britannias and Gold Sovereigns + some 1oz. - I’ve been focused on building weight as cost effectively as possible for my stack for my first year. However, I’d like to start to diversify by picking up a few more premium pieces next year. But I’m quite cautious until I learn more.
@@EveryCloud9999 Nice. For me I don't really stack much in the way of silver, but sovereigns generally have some of the lowest premium so that's a good choice. What type of things were you thinking of getting next year?

Paying a grading company to tell you your beautiful proof coin is a beautiful proof coin doesn't make sense. Especially when they knock a point off due to a microscopic flaw, which makes the graded coin less valuable than the raw. Buy made for collector proof coins on the after market when the hype has cooled down.
I really enjoyed the video and I believe that you have worked out thr right way to stack in the UK. Avoid silver at all cost due to the tax of 20% on all silver along with the Royal Mint basically selling a dream which will never happen. It's classed as a commodity here so it attracts vat so unless silver value suddenly takes (doubtable in my opinion) it's just too risky. I'm late to the game really so only started stacking 2 yrs ago but I only stack "Best value" gold sovereigns and the odd Britania. Premiums are low and It's all about gold the gold content for me and when the shtf ,I'll have fractional gold to barter with. We all have our own ideas and in reality none of us really know what lies ahead. All the best and good luck for the future. Ade
I collect the pretty stuff, try to avoid slabs
9:42 I would give up silver and just buy sovereigns but that shiny silver keeps getting me😩
Everyone had their thing, silver just isn't for me
The Royal Mint is watering down "collectable" coins by realising them pretty much every other day.
Totally agree, they are pumping them out daily. Think I have had an email everyday this week about new coins 😔

that Griffin is awesome. wonder how much you got it for.
Thanks, I got it when it was released so paid RRP which I think was £92.50

I started stacking early this year I buy pre owned 999 silver coins won't buy it new. If it's gold I only buy ancient gold.
