Mine was doing this, found out it was my timing belt tensioner. Thought it was a rod knock. Took the covers off and pushed down on the tensioner, engine sounded new and quiet. Replaced the belt and tensioner along with the bracket it was mounted too and the car sounded new again. Here we are a month later and it’s knocking again with the same problem. I take a screw and apply light pressure down on the tensioner and it goes away. I’m actually having a hard time with it. New parts and they are just wearing away right away. Last one lasted about five weeks and trashed a brand new tensioner.
Thanks for this video, my daughter has just bought a 2012 Subaru XV 2.0I-L 4WD 'EYESIGHT'. I popped the bonnet to hear what I thought was lifter tick but after watching this it sounds just like this Forester... So I guess we're all good and it is actually piston slap we are hearing. Plus I do like the sound of 300000 + km's if well maintained as her rat ride( VX ) has 146000 km's on the clock, so plenty of motoring yet then.. Great vid..
I just put a motor in mine from Japan and I heard this exact noise while driving and at idle it’s been so long since I heard a Subaru engine so I was worried I hear a little bit while driving but I gotta listen super closely while driving to even hear, so also these cars always have a slight lifter tick noise?
I just purchased a 2014 Crosstrek with the 2.0 with 105k miles. Has a similar sound but a little quieter and only hear it if I pop the hood or close to it. Your video is on the 2.5 so is it safe to assume the 2.0 boxter engine would have this similar sound?
I have just replaced my 2006 accord v6 engine from a low mileage car that was in a rollover accident. On cold starts it has a tapping noise that’s the same speed as the valve train. When you drive off before it’s fully warmed up the tapping noise follows RPM which worries me, feels slightly down on power before warming up too. Once it is warm the noise is only faint at idle, and goes away over 2k rpm’s. and has good power. No misfire/cel and runs smooth otherwise. I’ll post a video. Maybe a valve adjustment needed or something damaged in the rollover accident?
Thank you, sir. I have a question. I just purchased a 2011 3.9R outback. Everything runs, feels, and sounds smooth. But between 44-50mph, it feels like im riding over rumble strips. And then again between 60-65. If i let up off the accelerator while the issue is happening, it goes right away. The feeling and sound goes away after a couple of seconds. It doesn't happen every time neither. Please help.
I own a 2014 Wrx with the ej255. Runs and sounds likes a sewing machine. Subaru engines can be noisy. Idk why mine isn’t. Sometimes it has some piston slap on cold start tho.
Mine did that noise but the engine was warm and only happened on steep climbs....after a while the noise went away. Do you know what that might be? I have a very small leak on the exhaust (did even change oil level). Thanks
I have a 2014 Forester 2.5i Touring that i bought used with 112000mi. Has about 125000mi on it now. Started adding 1qt of Marvel's Mystery Oil and about 6oz of ProLube at oil changes. And adding 2oz of Marvel's per 5gal of fuel. Quite noticeable difference in sound, mileage, and the overall smoothness. Oil consumption seems to have improved as well. I think the Marvel's helps with the low friction piston rings having a tendency to become sticky and cause problems.
Hello from Perú. I have SH9 .shen you put D in order to start driving. Thats is a particular sound of the AT transmission. Always sound like that? I always have mechanical subarus and now i have an automatic. Ia that sound normal in 5AT transmission. Thanks for your support
Hello Peru! The transmission should not make a difference whether it’s an automatic or manual as far as engine noise. If it’s sounds like your other ones it’s probably normal.
Did you figure out the loud roaring? I have same concern, 2014 out back, almost sounds like a consistent humming noise. The gears will change but the hum/roar keeps its pitch throughout gear change. Quite loud on highway. Any clues?
Just bought a 2013 forester yesterday with 121k miles , went to turn it on today and hurt a little tick and my heart dropped to my stomach then the noise went away and I’ve been nervous all day! This is my first Subaru so this is very reassuring!
I am in the exact same boat. 2013 OB. Made this noise on the end of my first drive home from work after purchase. Well said, my heart was in my stomach. Thank you so so much for the video. Really eased my mind. ❤
@@motorcarnutsound still goes away with gas but I’m also getting some pressure in the crankcase, you think that would be pcv or egr? Engine feels nice and smooth
@@motorcarnut Another shop said the timing belt was bad but the engine starts and runs. No noise from the from but definitely on the passenger side. If it was a belt it would not run. Correct?
I'm onto my second engine in my second 2015 legacy. 2.5. Thanks for the reassurance... they all drive beautifully, but really do sound like crap.
They do, but most are all bark and no bite which is what we want for longevity.
The amount of time you saved me in sleep can be counted in days
I appreciate that bro!
Lol, that's the lifters doing work. It's totally normal on a boxer engine. Some new subaru comes with it, too.
Exactly why I made the video. But some are more loud and may make people worry.
thanks. yeah i was always a bit worried by the engine noise in my forester. glad you posted as that one is noisier than mine!
No problem, Subaru’s are great vehicles just some are more noisy than others
Excessive pistion slap might not go away
That is true!
Thanks for this video, gives me a piece of mind. I just bought one and it runs great, but when im on idle i hear this noise coming from the belt.
No problem.

Are you using factory parts?
My 2002 Impreza sounds like that! It does it while I’m in drive though, but in idle the noise does go away when I rev it up. I put 60k on it now lol
Normal

Thank you appreciated! Yes as long as the oil level is proper and changed on time that’s how most of them sound.

Depending on which engine you have most have some kind of noise which Subaru considers normal.

Correct, it would
thank you
You're welcome!
So that also means these cars always kinda sound like they have little lifter ticks?
Not always, but yes can sound like that.
Very helpful. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
This helped i still found using lucus injector cleaner and upper cylinder lubricant work to quiet it
Ok, good to know for others. Thanks for the info!

Does sound like the valves need to be adjusted

Could be the transmission converter or clutch’s slipping. If engine is not misfiring.
I own a 2014 Wrx with the ej255. Runs and sounds likes a sewing machine. Subaru engines can be noisy. Idk why mine isn’t. Sometimes it has some piston slap on cold start tho.
Not all are loud but some can be and be completely normal in operation
Mine did that noise but the engine was warm and only happened on steep climbs....after a while the noise went away. Do you know what that might be? I have a very small leak on the exhaust (did even change oil level). Thanks
Sounds like you may have a pinging ( knocking) ignition detonation maybe from low octane gas worn spark plugs etc

What about outback mine is no tap just loud roaring
Most likely on Subarus it’s a wheel bearing probably in the rear
Did you figure out the loud roaring? I have same concern, 2014 out back, almost sounds like a consistent humming noise. The gears will change but the hum/roar keeps its pitch throughout gear change. Quite loud on highway. Any clues?
@sydkid4952 it’s one of your wheel bearing, they are very common to go on Subaru’s.
Bro your valve lash is too lose on one. Quieter as it warms and lash tightens, pull your valve covers and get that set on all cylinders.
They are hydraulic lol. It’s what I said it was
i have sound like that but i got engine light for crankshaft and camshaft what does that mean
Timing problems
Thanks!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it!!!

@kevinrix1824 No problem that why I made the video. Also so no one takes advantage or people.
sounded like a lifter was loose
They are noisy
Mine sounds exactly like that but doesn’t go away when warm
It should, if not it’s wearing more than normal. You can try a thicker oil and maybe an additive and more frequent oil changes to prolong engine life
@@motorcarnutsound still goes away with gas but I’m also getting some pressure in the crankcase, you think that would be pcv or egr? Engine feels nice and smooth
PCV maybe , egr would make the car run rough
Chek the spark plogs 100%
Spark plugs don't make noise
You right i was have same problem after 3 micanic ass holl i was changing the spark in myself and it is gone 😅
What do you think if I have this noise but blue smoke coming from the passenger side of the engine. More when revving.
You may have a oil leak leaking on the exhaust
@@motorcarnut Another shop said the timing belt was bad but the engine starts and runs. No noise from the from but definitely on the passenger side. If it was a belt it would not run. Correct?
@douglineen8288 well if timing belt was bad the car would not run or run poorly. The leak is something else
Yep especially when it’s cold
Correct
Chek the pcv
Not related
@@motorcarnut did you fix it or not
Fix what?
That’s your timing belt tensioner
No, that's a completely different sound.
@@motorcarnutlike a loud roar/vibration but no knocking?
@maxterry938 try making a video and post it on your channel and I’ll give a listen.
Nah. My tensioner failed and didn’t sound like this. This is normal piston slap.
Sounds like dingle lifters. Sucks when you get a new car and within a year the motor is sounding like crap.
