The owners of the "Golden Lion" Irish pub wanted to change the name to something more Irish , but seeing the small street is called "Golden Lion Bank" , the locals were not impressed and successfully challenged the change of name. Great pub , I was there a few days ago 😊

What a perfect day haven’t been to Whitby since the 00s and that was a day trip. Spent yesterday on a short visit to Lyme Regis, Dorset. The sunshine in the north at Whitby during your visit gave it a spectacular edge. You might even get me shopping. The town has pride in itself!!

Yes I decided to stay in Whitby in the first week in January making the mistake that it would be peaceful and having the entire town to myself... not the case, it was packed out, more so than in your video. Despite the crowds I had a lovely couple of days visiting the town, as its been a couple of decades since I last visited Whitby, and it has barely changed, which is a plus!

hi Tim great video. ive been to whitby 100s of times as we only live a short drive away and never set foot in st marys church. did you know the bench you sat on as you climbed the steps was put there so the undertakers carrying the coffin upto the graveyard could take a breather. Whitby is also famous for its its lucky duck shop. everytime we visit we make sure we buy 1 of the tiny glass ducks or 1 of the many other animals and objects on sale. you can also watch them being made.

St Mary's Church is actually older than the Abbey, and unusually preserves an eighteenth-century interior, with box pews. The wealthy could hire these out, and the pew rents were a useful source of income for the church.
And don't forget Lewis Carroll! He also stayed in Whitby, and the poem 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' was inspired by the beaches. 'Such quantities of sand'...

Hi Tim. Nice video but just a couple of things to point out.
The day you filmed it was a lovely day but the sea was very calm. You just managed to capture the biggish waves at high tide, which you always get before the tide turns. Then at about 11mins in, you said that Whitby doesn't have any piers! You said this after walking down the length of the West Pier including the extension ends where you walked underneath and glanced over to the East pier.
    Keith, the Whitby Postie 😉

@@WalkWithMeTim Do you mean they're not traditional because they're not built on stilts and have amusement arcades down the length of them?
Whitby's piers were built in the early 1500's and I would say that there are more traditionally stone built piers around the UK than the more modern ones which you class as 'traditional' !
