  • There are a lot of tips out there to learn how to golf, so we put together the 5 Best Tips for Beginner Golfers to help you in the right direction.
    So you’ve decided to take the plunge and you’re going to learn how to play golf.
    Let me be the first to congratulate you on your decision.
    Whatever your reason for learning to play, golf is the greatest sport there is. Built on honor, integrity and sportsmanship (embodied by The First Tee); golf is a window into a person’s soul. You can learn a lot about someone just by how they conduct themselves on the golf course. Being outdoors in the fresh air and getting some good cardio exercise also isn’t a bad way to spend 4 hours either. You may also want to keep a psychiatrist on speed dial, too. Golf can be frustrating and drive you to the brink of insanity if you let it, but let’s not get into that right now. The game is magical.
    There’s no need to buy a book called “Golf Tips for Beginners” or anything like that, because I’m going to hook you up with some free tips. You’re welcome.
    1. THE PROPER GOLF GRIP
    Golf is like any sport in the fact it takes practice and repetition to become good. Before you can make a golf swing with a golf club you need to know how to grip it.
    The first golf tip for beginners is the most basic and the most important. You can’t swing a club properly with the wrong grip. To start gripping the club, hold it in front of you at eye level with your right hand (assuming you’re right-handed). Now take your left hand and put the pad of your hand on the top of the club and close your fingers around the club. Got that? Great. If you want to do a test to see if you have it right, let your arm fall by your side and push the top of the club down, if the bottom of the club comes up, you’ve done it properly.
    Once you have gotten the grip down, let's move into the actual golf swing.
    The Golf Takeaway
    Your technique on the takeaway can make or break your shot. If you get the club moving away from the ball correctly, you set yourself up for a solid golf swing. However, if you compromise your form on the takeaway into the back swing, you’ll the see consequences in your ball flight. Before you even transition into the downswing, you are in a bad position and have a lot of fixing to do to hit a quality golf shot.

    After watching this video a few times and taking notes, I went to the range for just the second time in my life (after a completely miserable and discouraging first-time experience) and implemented these tips. I was absolutely astonished by the results and could not believe the difference after just a few shots. I actually found myself swinging with accuracy and even hit the pin I was aiming for about 80 yards out with my 9 iron! Thank you so much for this video!

      9 iron? I hit my 58° wedge 75-80 yards. Rainbow flight pattern and it sticks the green. Keep it up and you'll gain yardage in no time. I grew up on a golf course, so its not really fair.

    As a life long baseball player, I have been loading up and swaying back to my back foot. I had no idea you were suppose to have most of you weight on your front foot and rotate your hips. That's a huge tip for me, thank you!

    • @shawnagunn9054
      @shawnagunn9054 6 лет назад +7

      Logan Merrick i had to cut a tennis ball in half and put under heel of my lead foot. That helps to make sure all weight is even on both feet. Not on toes or heels. And that helped me learn to shift my weight and get more power in my down swing.

      Dude, same here! Life-long baseball player who could have made it pro. I never realized that swaying and loading to the back foot were detrimental. Constant topping! One day, I just planted my feet, kept my head still, rotated my hips and learned how to distribute weight to the front. Boom! Got it nailed! The game is so much more enjoyable now. Played 9 holes the other day and did not top 1 ball and hit my irons pure and not far from the pin.

      It’s rough going from a baseball swing to a golf swing. Played probably 80 games and season with club and trying to change that muscle memory is so difficult. Once I was able to make the adjustment, I could finally compete with my friends and not lose 10 balls a round. The struggle was real but I appreciate the craft more now!

    On the range, particularly with my irons, I am relaxed and hit very few bad shots. When on the course, where it counts, I seem to tense up and hit a lot of bad shots. How best to "carry from the range to the course?"

    If you're reading this in 2019 .. best thing to work on is your grip at first. I can't explain how much this helped me understand the swing. Also, do "full swings". So that you can see the club head with your peripheral vision (left eye for right hand golfers). This will help you start to understand what the club feels like when it hinges in your hands. If you continually focus on practicing this.. I PROMISE... you will become better at golf. I sucked for 4 years until I finally told myself enough is enough. I went and pitched/putted on the practice green for 3-4 hours a day, developing a full swing while maintaining correct power for the shot I was taking. Like a great man once said "It's all in the hips".

    Thanks for the tips, after sucking in a tournament, I looked for something simple to get me back on track, watched this and hit 50 practice shots for 5 straight days, the only thing I added was concentrating on the ball and slowing down my backswing so I didn't pull my eyes off the ball my key was making sure I saw the club strike the ball, have a lot more short chips and putts... I am now scoring in the mid 80's and actually made a couple of dollars in a tournament,

    Hello Todd, (hey Nick), I'm 63, just retired and from California and had this crazy idea that I would to return to this game after 20 years of life/work keeping me off the golf course. Went to the range a few weeks ago for the first time and remembered how frustrating golf was and wondered what the hell was I thinking deciding to play golf again...then I found your videos and your book The Bad Lie, and everything changed for the better at the range and not a frustrated, each visit gets a little better and better. Looking forward to playing my first round this week with more confidence and not discouragement.
    Thank you, for your videos and your book...you definitely have taken the "stupid" out of the golf swing for us experienced golfers. I watched one of your videos with you in the real world on a course from tee to green, very informative...any chance of seeing more of that?

    Thanks for the info on taking off. It's been 10 years since I've played competitively, and I cannot remember how to take off from the ball. In short, I've been taking off low and shifting my waist which is very inconsistent. Also, good point on the grip. I believe the grip is one of the most important techniques. If your grip is off, it's hard to feel comfortable with every shot.

    You talk about keeping the left thumb on top of the shaft and short. What about the right thumb. I've always used an interlocking grip but have recently been working to change to an overlapping grip. What should I be doing with my right thumb? Short, long, wrapped around the shaft? excellent teacher. Probably the best. But, what I am having a hard time seeing on this video is what do you mean by the golf head looks squared up. I guess i don't understand what squared up means in golf , because your club head in the video looks like it is facing .down towards the ground , not horizontally. Can you elaborate or another video that shows the club head at this position from different angles?\

    Hardly ANY golf teacher/pro emphasizes pushing right knee forward to start downswing--which starts the hips clearing --that's why people spin or shift the hips forward--rather than letting them clear for an inside swing!! The right knee must start it!!

  • @ronanmcmillan9784
    @ronanmcmillan9784 4 года назад

    I think the reminder not to sway the hips and to rotate is key. I will try that tip today. As a beginner and tall man I’ve just bought oversized clubs and last night, first time out, I kept hitting the top of the ball. Direction is there, but not striking the ball clean. Should I be squatting down into it more?

    Todd, Great information! I've been struggling with inconsistency my whole life, and you made me realize I'm a slider on the back swing, instead of turning into the right heal. Haven't tried it out on the course yet, but it seems to help me get through the shot a lot better and finish the downswing after the ball instead of ahead of it. Thanks! Can't wait to give this a try.

    Hi, Todd. This has been an especially helpful video, and I am going to work those drills.
    A helpful video if you can make would relate to neck position. I can actually turn farther than I do, but my neck is rather stiff so turning too much pulls my head around so the ball jumps out of my glasses and I miss hit. I saw your comment about head position aimed behind the ball, but if I turn it leftward then I can backswing farther before the ball jumps out of my vision.
    Thanks for all you do for us. Ted of Franklin TN

    I may have found this video late but keen to try the one foot and see how it aids my swing. On a second note, I am interested in your opinion on where the grip starts in relation to the end of the club? I get in the hitting area and then everything goes to crap. Just can't seen to get the club head on the ball solidly.. Friends I play with say you are not swing threw the ball, you are not hitting down on the ball..hitting my woods and do not get them air born. Michael Poalillo good question....our preference is for the club face to stay square for the first few feet of the takeaway...by the time the club head reaches waist high to face will be rotating...better to have less face rotation vs too much rotation in our opinion...thanks for watching! Todd, great information on how to keep the golf swing as simple as possible. Now if I own an Impact Snap trainer and I watch what you do at impact and what that device teaches at impact, don't you need to "flip" a little at the bottom of the swing to "release" at impact?

    • @USGOLFTVshow
      @USGOLFTVshow  Год назад

      There is some release of the wrists to get the clubface back to a neutral position. The real KEY is the timing of this release. Done too early, and you will struggle with contact and distance...done too late and it will be difficult to get proper loft on the ball.
