This video made me feel so nostalgic. Back in the day, when I was a child, one of my favorite things to do was go to the drive-in-movies. My Mom would make a grocery bag full of popcorn and a thermos filled with Koolaid. Then my siblings and I would be dressed in our pajamas. There were always at least two features. The first would be a family movie geared toward kids. The second movie could be anything. We all watched the first movie and then my siblings and I were expected to lay down and go to sleep. As I started getting older it got harder to go to sleep when my parents wanted me to. One night I pretended to go to sleep. After my siblings settled down I very quietly sat up and began to watch the second feature. It was the sci-fi movie called THE BLOB starring Steve McQueen. That movie scared the bejeezus out of me. To this day, when I think about that movie I still get the creeps. I'm glad you and Ach had such a good time. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing.

We still have a drive-in near me and go there several times in the summer months. They still have the 2 movies, first feature more kid centered than the second. The food choices at the snack shack are incredible with everything from pizza and chicken to ice cream sundaes.

I've not yet read the comments but I am 100% certain a lot of us older American fans of yours are telling their stories about how we grew up with drive-in movie theaters! It was great back in the day, but we didn't have fun actors or a speaker delivered to us. We had to drive up to our speakers, LOL!! We also had to walk a farmer's mile to get to the concession stand for food and drink. I don't believe alcohol was served b/c many people were obviously driving, haha!! We'd bring pillows and blankets and some would come to the drive-in in their pick up trucks and lay in the bed of the truck watching the movie. This was FAN TASTIC!! Thanks Lia and Ach!! 💖

When I was little my family would go to the drive-in. My siblings and I would be in our pajamas, robes, and slippers so that we'd be ready for bed when we got home. Often they'd show a double feature, so it would be quite late by the time the movies ended. The 3 of us (the eldest 7 the last time we lived near a drive-in theater) would fall asleep in the back seat. We always snuck in popcorn from home. We kids would help make enough popcorn to fill a brown paper grocery bag and my dad would salt it and throw in a whole stick of butter which would be melted by the time we were
ready to eat it. Until I saw it in a movie many years later, I never knew there were swings at drive-ins because it was usually dark when we got there so my parents didn't take us to play on them.

Australia only has 17 of then in the entire continent.. There are 2 drive-in's within 10 minutes of my house in Ohio, and 7 of them within a 1 hour drive (one of them has laser-tag within the concession building 🙃)
Some of my earliest memories were at the drive-in with my family. And still today, I go every other weekend. Especially for dates 😅

    The American drive-in experience;
    1. Smuggle a couple of friends inside in the trunk.
    2. Park along the back fence to make out with your significant other or smoke weed.
    3. Go to the refreshment stand during the movie to get more popcorn during a slow part of the movie and occasionally glance at the screen and try to read the lips of the characters on screen.
    4. Get the extra large popcorn and soda and very carefully get it back to your car without spilling it.
    5. Accidentally drive away with the speaker still attached to the car and rip the cord out of the post. That's why they use FM radios and frequencies today.

Drive-ins in the US usually show 2 films or 3, or the ones I used to go to always did. The first movie was always a family-friendly movie or usually, it would be, and the second or even third one was a raunchy foreign film in English. That of course was back in the '70s. I was just a kid then. I really loved how excited you were to just have an American experience.

I've had a drive-in near me my entire life. The first movie I remember seeing there was STAR WARS. My parents would hide me under a blanket in our station wagon when I was a kid to sneak me in for free. As a young teenager, I'd never watch the movies, instead hang out with friends (look at girls) by the concession stand. In high school, it was a place to make out. In college, we'd sit in the bed of someone's truck with coolers of beer. Now I take my kid there, just without the sneaking in part. On a side note, I like Ach's idea of retiring to serve ice cream. I have a Dairy Queen two blocks from my house and I've always thought I'd love to work there once I retire. Serving ice cream is serving happiness.

I remember drive ins when I was a child. When they charged per person, teenagers would hide in the trunk (boot) to get in free. Later they charged by the car. Kids would wear their pajamas so they could just be carried to bed when they got home. It was a treat to get something from the concession stand. My favorite was a Chilly Dilly (a large cold dill pickle). The speaker was on a stand at the parking spot and you hung it on the inside of your rolled up window. Later they had heaters in the same way for winter nights. There were neighborhoods around and I know people watched the movies from home without sound, of course.

Everyone hung out there, whether you were there to watch a movie or not. Drive in movies have virtually disappeared in the US. They were so great to go to. You could see the picture as you pulled into the parking lot but couldn't hear anything until you pulled the speaker off the post that held it and put it on your steering wheel. Later the sound of the movie would come thru your radio when you tuned to a special frequency. They had to change because people would cut the cord on the speaker and steal it.

The last time i was at a Drive in Theater was in 1975 at a location in Maryland here in the States. I took my Father's car without his permission and came very close to getting it stuck in the mushy parking lot. He never did find out, much to my relief. There are not too many of them left in the States, but every once in a while someone will open one up and try to give it a go. In the times we are in, a Drive in Theater might be a good alternative to packing people into a movie theater.

There's a drive in about 45 minutes away. We try to go once or twice a summer. They do a double feature and have three screens. These days, they don't have the speakers on the pole anymore. They have an FM transmitter and you use your car stereo. When the kids are with us, we put chairs in front of the car and put a boom box in front of them.

Greetings from SoCal. Nothing like a Drive-In-Movie... in the rain... with the wiper blades on😆😂 Hope it was a double feature, at least. Cheers.

Drive ins are good for parents who have station wagons. Kids can play with lego in the back while adults watch movie up the front.

Gosh I remember the metal polls with a speaker hanging on it with a couple feet of wire. You rolled the window down a few inches and hung it on the glass facing inwards. Sometimes you got a bad speaker and would have to pick a different parking spot. Then in the 90s they got fancy and you tuned into a certain radio frequency on your car radio. Now our city has no drive-ins anymore. One is just over grown with weeds and small trees, and the other is now a Sam's Club.

They used to be all over is the US, I think we only have 1 or 2 here in Oregon. The old trick was to pay for one or two of you and have like 10 of your friends (mates) in the trunk. Or you bring your pick up truck, go to your spot and back in and sit in the back of the truck bed in old lounge chairs. Drive in are perfect for pandemics.

When I was a kid we had four of them within a ten mile/16 KM range. One showed nothing but Mexican films, One showed westerns, the other two showed new movies. There all gone now, replaced by the huge movie chains. There still a few left in small towns around us. There used to be a hot dog stand near where we lived and we would get some dogs before heading to the shows. What is surprising is in all those years criminal activity was very rare at the drive in's.

Lia you reminded me when I was little kid and we would go to the drive in. It was always the best time. Always exciting. You got to wear your pajamas and lay on top of the car, and eat a boatload of junk. There's still a few drive in theaters left in the US.

In America you can take food and non alcohol drinks to the drive ins. Usually we use our car radio to hear the show.

Drive-in theaters are not very popular these days in America. We have one in Georgia just south of city of Atlanta called the Starlight drive in. It is in a shady part of town and if you don’t mind the smell of weed it’s a different experience also the audio is through your car stereo.

Lia , you bring joy me joy at how excited you are about the drive in movie. Relax don't do it when you want to go to it, Relax don't do it, when u want to come come... (release in 1983 by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, A British Band. Some of lyric are said to be of a sexual in nature and did cause some controversy back in the day, however here in America it was played alot and was one if my favorite 80's song, part if the British/Europe invasion, Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Rick Asley, Spandau Ballet,Dexy's Midnight Runners, Roxette,Soft Cell. I'm an 80's fan and a Zen Z..

We used to go to a few by where we lived. Only 1 remains today and im not even sure if they're even open right now. Moved 4 hours south. Your theater looks awesome - ours never did that stuff - but they could be by now. Glad you had a great time

This is so fun, love how excited you were! I've only been to a drive-in once, but I got to see Jurassic Park (the OG) which was fantastic. That little Alabama drive-in wasn't nearly as fancy and upscale as this one though.

We still have a drive in here in Reno. It's a swap meet during the day, I think.
Best was when I was in HS back in 70s. That was Calif. Most of the car windows were fogged up to be honest! 😅😘
