I was born and raised on Long Island, raised in Huntington Station. Had a house in Bellport. Sold and moved away in 2005 to Puerto Rico but now in Kansas, I miss Long Island very much.

I live in Upstate. Although I have many friends there. I decided not to visit Long Island anymore . The drivers there are reckless, traffic is crazy, The good restaurants always try to scam people, the hotels are overpriced, and in most neighbourhoods the people aren’t very friendly or helpful.

@@leah12180 There are nice places towns in LI for sure I personally like towns close to the shore like Long Beach, patchhog and Montuk. As a tourist I wouldn’t visit them in the summer because the hotels are either overpriced or unavailable.
Just least a base model Dodge Ram with ugly aftermarket wheels and buy a punisher skull sticker and 5 salt life bumper stickers and you will be treated as an honored foreign royal ambassador here in Suffolk, that is if the truck doesn’t get stuck in one of our 7 inch deep potholes
I'm from Long Island, I was born and raised there and stayed there my entire life until I left to NYC around 21 years old or so. I miss it a lot. I'd do anything to go back.

I have lived in Nassau and Suffolk Counties most of my life, but for the past 26 years have lived in Bayside, Queens. I think my area (called Oakland Gardens) is still affordable. We have express busses to the city, one goes up 3rd Ave and the other goes up 6th Ave. Its quiet, leafy, lots of parks nearby and I can hop on the LIE or NSP and go east at a moment's notice. I just came back from my local supermarket and saw some of my neighbors there, it's very much a neighborhood. I think my area is a good alternative for those who want the best of both worlds and I think our taxes are much lower here.

I'm moving to Westbury on Monday 2-27-23. Excited & a lil nervous
I lived my entire adult life on L.I. I just moved to PA. Not gonna knock the Island, great place to live. I have enjoyed all the beaches, parks and restaurants as mentioned in this video. I had a good paying job in the city so I could afford the high cost of living. Make sure you have a good paying job if you want to live on the island. One more con is trying to get off the island. You have to drive through the city and across 2 major bridges-talk about traffic and tolls. You can take a ferry, but that might cost close to $100!! Oh, and watch out for the plethora of red light cameras!

I left for the Mid-West absolutely love it here. Don't miss NY at all....maybe the pizza, bagels, and Chinese food

Thanks for the video.i agree what you said ... I lived on long Island for 30 years. All different parts .. just wanted to add that being close to the sea water It can take a beating on your house and your cars etc .the beaches are very nice to enjoy the day with your family or your friends . But in my case I spent so much time working to afford a home I didn't get to enjoy them much .the north shore is the way to go if your looking for a home in my opinion. As I lived on both

Upstate is beautiful , but I think for me leaving the state is the way to go. . I don't mind working hard but to not be able to enjoy the pros on a regular basis makes the cons outlay the pros .

Levittown for me was Great place back in the day to grow up in 👍😀 Family was in Bethpage and Hicksville 💜 Again in the 70's it was great neighborhoods and Traditional Up bringing 🙏🙏

Dad grew up in Glen Cove.. loved visiting coming from Los Angeles where I grew up.
I grrew up in Suffolk county near bellport/east Patchogue. My grandparents lived in Stonybrook. North shore is so different from south shore. After being away for almost 30 years , id like to come bscl but the housing situation is outrageously expensive. Even 2 bed small house is over 250 k and thats out in the boonies like wading river or something. And the property taxes are sky high but i do know ppl there still. Maybe i go visit and check around. I dunno. Miss the ocean and the bay.

Born and raised on LI, left after high-school for the Marines shortly after graduation. 30 year's later I've still not been back to visit. I really should, on my bucket list.
So funny. I did the same thing except I joined the Navy. 34 years ago. Haven’t been back since 1989. Don’t miss it enough, I guess. Grew up in CI. Maybe that had something to do with it. 😂

Leaving Long Island in a week to move upstate. Long Island has just become too damn expensive and the traffic sucks and to rent an apartment is obscene, who the Hell wants to work 2-3 jobs just to pay rent? I think there is too much greed and not enough kindness too.

The Long Island Railroad is a great way to commute into the city and travels east and west along the Island. Public transportation in NYC is good. If traveling throughout the island, you will need a car. Public transportation on the Island is poor. Taxis are expensive.

I grew up there (in Wantagh) but would not consider moving back. Even if I was more prosperous, my money would go so much further other places, I'd have to be richest 1% to be interested.
Surprised he didn't mention the LIRR. Would that be a pro or a con? I think a pro mostly, but very expensive
I lived in Nassau county long Island for 17 years. Freeport and Hempstead NY. The property taxes are too high
Been here all my life. All areas. Worked all areas on LongIsland. And NYC. I could give you a good rating on places to go.

I grew up on Long Island and left in 1985 for Western NY. The only thing I miss are the beaches, which is why we own property in South Carolina. And oh yeah, the SC beaches are even nicer.
Thinking about working at the airport in Westhampton Beach. Just looking to rent, would there be an area you would recommend looking into,not too far from out there? Im thinking like 20 miles out if able. Thanks!
Anything Hampton is gonna be pricey. Maybe north up in Riverhead area might be a good place to look. Be careful around Mastic/shirley area

Excellent video and very informative. As someone who lives in western Nassau county, I would only add that prospective buyers should consider the North shore if they have the means. As a long-time Long Island homeowner who has lived in various parts of Long Island, the difference in quality of life and amenities is quite different from North to Central to South Shore. More money up front to live in the North Shore but in my opinion well worth it.

Second I completely agree as someone who grew up in the North Shore and still living here I do feel the quality of life is nicer and there are more amenities in most areas of North shore compared to Central and South Shore. More money up front is putting it mildly. North shore Nassau County is the richest area in the country, talk about high real estate taxes!
@@christopherrichards1025 North shore is indeed expensive and taxes are high. However, when you look at overall value, it far exceeds living in other places on the Island. I focus on the incremental cost of living between towns in Nassau county which helped me rationalize my existing cost of ownership. Bigger problem in my area is that there is little inventory for sale. Just about all of my neighbors are in their homes 25 or more years (including me). Once people move in, they don't leave.
Go ahead and say it.....most of Long Islands South Shore is bad news...
I loved it here growing up. Especially the summers. But as an adult, not so much. I do not recommend living on Long Island, even if you have the means, your health will be harmed.

Is it because it’s expensive as hell? I really wanted to move to Long island but my husband says we’re gonna be struggling and living just to pay a mortgage. We’re thinking about Florida at this point. I’m from Queens btw
@@mocha1886 I would not recommend moving here. Your husband is absolutely right, it is a huge struggle to stay afloat here. I’m born and raised on Long Island my husband as well , we have many times said we need to get out of here but I feel like we are stuck!

Dix Hills and Melville. Bellport Village and patchogue is lovely also.
Long Island is gentrified, especially when compared to other parts of the country. Some areas of LI more than others. I lived in Bayshore, very diverse, great place to live.
Baldwin. My wife and I have lived here for 37 years. North of Sunrise Highway you are not in a flood zone. Good train service to Manhunt and a twenty minute drive to beautiful Long Beach and Lido Beach. And just over an hour to wine country on the North Fork if you go mid-week.

INSANE that in 2 years the median home price has gone from aprx 400k to 600k and the interest rates have gone from 2% to damn near 9% 🤯
As if we didnt have a big enough cost of living problem already. The outward migration statistics for this year are jaw dropping
Agreed it’s been a tough couple years hope you are doing well.
This is mostly about Nassau. Suffolk County has much more to offer out on the East End. Farm stands. Beaches. Beaches. We have no traffic compared to LA or anywhere else. Trails. Hiking. Rivers. Retirement villages. Taxes are better than Nassau. Quality of life is soooo much better.

I live on Long Island. Worst part is leaving. I make a comfortable livable wage to stay here. Nowhere else compares. I live in central Suffolk. From here east is beautiful. The feast is too congested. I dread driving west

For all practical purposes there's only one way in and one way out - through NYC. There are some ferries to Connecticut, but they are not convenient or cost effective. I'm very disappointed they have never built the tunnel to Connecticut, and it certainly won't happen in my lifetime. It would tremendously improve traffic on the bridges and in the Queens/Nassau region.

Look in to spend 5 to 6 mos. Summer may thru Oct. Any studio apartments for mom and I to rent? In a basically safe neighborhood? Suggestions are welcome.

As of 1985, the US Supreme Court interpreting a maritime law case, legally designated Long Island New York as actually "Long Peninsula" New York. According to the Court, since the peninsula formally known as Long Island, is not actually an island because only a river (the East River) separates Long Peninsula from the mainland. According to the Court, a Sea or Ocean is required to separate and island from a mainland. Inter...esting!

The worst part about Long Island is that the demographic trends are changing rapidly. Various ethnic groups are moving into certain neighborhoods in droves. The sense of community that once existed is no longer there. Having any meaningful connection with others is difficult; people are tribal and prefer the company of those that are like themselves. This is all on top of the expenses and other issues mentioned. Makes for a very impersonal living experience.

Public transportation on Long Island is the absolute worst!!
Its a suburb.. You don't live in the suburbs or outside a major city center if you don't have a car

Maybe point out that the Northshore borders the LI Sound and the Southshore is the Atlantic Ocean, instead of saying the Northshore waters are "more calm." Just a thought.

I live in NYC. Our Magical City is very safe, convenient and beautiful. What crime you are talking about? You have to go to certain neighborhoods to experience crimes. You are fooled by media.
LI seems to be a naturally beautiful yet highly depressing, listless place to live. You have to enjoy miserable existence to live in that isolated narrow strip.
When I want a beach vacation, I go to California. Not Long Island.

Long Island is soooo boring. And expensive. It’s not worth it at all. Move to Grand Rapids Michigan.
And what exactly is more *exciting" about Grand Rapids than "boring" Long Island? All I know is there's very few places in the world where you can leave your house and be at the beach in 15 minutes and also be less than an hour away from a top 10 world class city (I'm on south shore near Jones Beach).
I just found out today how far Long Island is from NYC, at the other end around a 2 hour drive. That is nowhere close! I can drive down to Olympia from Seattle in that time.
2 hours? Maybe with a ton of traffic and if you are going far out east
