Wind is your friend. Some folks don't like to hunt on windy days, unless you live in a state where the wind blows all the time and have no choice. Wind covers your steps, and brush moving from the wind helps cover your movement. Dry weather can be tough too, like you're walking on corn flakes. Still hunting in the morning with dew on before sun dries it up good time or after a rain. Old Indian advice when still hunting, "Move a little, look a lot."

I will always still hunt when it’s raining. If I’m in the tree and it’s been raining for a bit I will get down and still hunt and then when it stops raining I will find a new tree. I have walked right up on a bedded buck and could have touched his nose with my arrow and wee looked eye to eye for five seconds and he got up on his knees and crawled away and disappeared into some super nasty thick stuff. It was a small wood lot so I knew he didn’t leave because it was cut down corn on three sides and the side that was connected by woods was on the opposite end of us so like I said I knew he didn’t leave and I walked and walked and he never would jump up so I never seen him again until the next time I hunted that wood lot a few weeks later and I got him. The little wood lot I’m talking about is right behind our feed mill that my family owns and I work at so I for the most part only hunt it if I want to get a hunt in after work and don’t have time to go anywhere else which is usually 2-3 times a season. A big buck always makes that his bedroom so it’s not a big deer area just a bedroom for a mature buck that want to get away and be alone.

Good stuff!!! To me shadows are very important. I also sit a lot. I'll catch myself going faster and faster as I go if I don't stop often and slow myself down.
It's a good feeling when your out a while and slowly get you woods ears and you start hearing and you've slowed down and start seeing. Not everyone ever gets in tune. Most are in to big a hurry.
Very well said! It's amazing how the woods tells talks to you if you listen. If you are not hearing birds, frogs, squirrels, etc you are moving to fast. When you slow way down the woods come alive around you letting you know you are now acting as part of it.

Absolutely agree , take your time go slow , look listen wait , move slowly again that's what I usually do , also use the wind to mask your foot steps etc, use the shadows as well . Thanks for sharing your tips.

Several years ago I started using the HECS clothing which is designed to interrupt electrical field of a body. I am a convinced hunter in wearing this while doing any hunting. I also wear a loose leaf type ghillie suit, pants jacket and head cover with my face in camo. Hands are either lightly gloved or camo on the back side. My long bow has that peel and stick ,easily removable, tape/ cloth on it to eliminate the shiny finish. My goal is to become invisible as a human slowly through the woods etc. Animals are very aware in their environment and one will have very poor results if you think you can just stroll around nonchalantly. Your mindset is to become a predator with killing as your goal. You have to hunt into any breeze or wind. You will NOT fool their nose. You may fool their eyes and ears but not normally. Actually, still hunting is an art and a skill IMO

I started this tactic on WI whitetails....This was a precourser to hunting the ND Badlands. Move slowly, avoid noisey floor cover and keep a tree or a bush between u and your route. I was able to get with in 30 yards or so to my uncle who was hunting from a tree stand without being detected.... Works really good on deer when feeding. . True form of hunting. Keep up the good video presentaions.

I hunt in Pierre (Pere) South Dakota area, some really flat stuff and using the corn or tall grass and stepping quiet is a trick if the snow is hard older snow or the place has no good quiet spots for me to step. The Grass and knowing to not go through the Stiff stuff that looks like hay as it tends to be louder especially if the wind is down.
I try and find the straightest path to, in an attempt to eliminate walking laterally toward the target. I find if you keep a straight profile, you pop out less.
You strike me as more of a tough northern cold weather hunter, than a hot humid one!
Spent my whole life hunting northern Michigan freezing Temps. Now I would rather hunt a 90 degree day than a zero degree day. But my favorite is still that 40-60 temp range

Put in about 6 miles today on the big A, talked to the conservation officer on the way out.
He said I was doing everything right, just need to keep putting time in.

My favorite way to hunt to my natural ground blinds. Always have a foam cushion strapped to fanny pack. Sometimes you get in the deer and have to tuck in to cover and set up. Great information here. Your having a blast! Enjoy.

This works really well on open prairie in Pierre South Dakota and bedding in the tall grass or near a cedar tree/honey locust tree to hide from the deer. Love this and yes, a non nylon outer cover Heat a Seat or the foam type cushion is the way to go though sometimes a small stool like a three/four leg or a small folding stool can work if that is does not make a loud noise when setting it up.
80 degrees and still hunting?! HAAAAA! We have mid 90's in FL when the rut is on. Talk about scent control....Being a prt of the environment is key. TY for your great vids !!

Some of your subscribers will probably laugh at this but I learned some of these same techniques while hunting birds with a BB gun as a child. I think kids and BB guns are a natural fit given proper instruction and eye protection. From there I went on to become an adult sportsman. So goes America.
Same here. Birds and frogs with a bb gun as a 8 year old with woods and ditches behind the house. Had to get close as the bbs would veer off course after about 12 yards. I consider it a vital part of my outdoor education
I have to do this all the time and yes in open areas there are still places you can if they have kept the native tall grass and wind is up a bit say 10--15 mph or even 5--10 mph it works as does hunting in the softer grass/soft hunting if you know this is a less stiff grass then some that look like hay or reed grass. Sometimes there is no choice and then you know that 90% of this part will not be getting the animal you are hunting. Snow is another trick and sometimes the older crunchy it can't be avoided.

@@SamkoTradBow Yep the Wrong Grasses Have given me away when hunting before, the stiff dry stuff did this, and I hate missing that huge doe to this day when doing the standard Gun season at age 13. We were Doe Hunting during the Standard Gun season with antlerless tags due to Doe usually having better tasting meat. There is a percussion season too in South Dakota few do, but Bowhunting is more common nearly as much as the Standard gun seasons especially early into the bowhunting season before Pheasant season as that bird is a big hunting one in South Dakota that can be found easy as a wild introduced bird. Odd however you can't hunt birds other then Turky with a Bow legally in South Dakota.

What would you say the odds are of getting attacked by a feral pig? Say if you shot it but didn’t hit a kill shot at 15 yards and it charges? Or if you are near the piglets?
Realistically, I would say 5% chance. 99.5 times out of 100 they want to run away to cover

This may sound stupid but if you really want a lot of practice with this, go bow hunt squirrels.
Nothing about that is stupid. Actually the exact opposite and amazing advise.
I was hunting with an old timer several years ago and he said “show me a guy who comes home every day with a limit of squirrels and I you one of the best hunters you will ever see.” That stuck with me ever since.

Just personal preference. I like the freedom of mobility on a stand and I do not like facing a tree 1 foot in front of my face for all day sits. I do 30 or so all day sits a year. Stands work better for me.
