I do miss hunting from a treestand, but after a handful of close calls back in the day from roofing/exterior painting off a high ladder has really changed how I do with heights. However, after hunting all last year from the ground with either a turkey chair or simply sitting against a tree I had the best deer hunting opportunities/encounters than I ever have in all my years put together. Deer were almost stepping on me during bow season, and I had a 7 pointer come to within 4 yards of me because he could smell the protein bar wrapper in my pocket. Haha it was an exceptional year! Still loving the content Jason, between you and Dan Infalt I have leveled up so much as a hunter. Thanks a lot!
Yep won't be too many years and I'm going to go to ground only. Not sure when but I can feel myself thinking about it more and more. There are alot of advantages to being on the ground! Glad you are enjoying the content and getting into deer well! 4 yards on the ground is quite an experience!
@@SamkoTradBow yeah I was basically hiding behind my crossbow the entire time, plus it was hiding the little section of my face that was exposed through my camo face mask. I thought he was gonna walk right up to me, but I think he saw my jacket moving from breathing he was that close and he freaked out a little bit. He jumped back, almost hit the tree next to him and sorta did a half-ass dodge in the air to keep from hitting it haha it was such a cool experience! Too many cool encounters last season, hopefully many more!
Interesting scouting Jason. I’ve started doing the same thing a few years back. Immediately shot some deer on the ground. And each year since getting a few more each year - each year using deer sign and wind direction as decision makers as to where to hunt. Still love trees but the results have been amazing and last year more deer tagged from the ground only two from a tree. Good hunting, Cory
Love this comment! Yep hunting from the ground can be very productive. Wont be too many years and I will only be hunting from the ground. Sooner rather than later im gonna get tired of climbing trees and packing gear in and out.
Great video. Look forward to seeing the rest in your bow hunting course. Particularly relevant as I listened to an older podcast of yours on hunting from the ground and used the information to get within ten yards of a decent six point. When you have time after the season, and if you’re inclined, I’d like to see a video where you cover the building and use of the different ground blind structures you described in the podcast. Enjoy all your stuff and wish it had been around twenty years ago when I started hunting. It would have really shortened the learning curve.
Glad you are enjoying all the content! I plan to sometime make a video on the ground hunting tools I talked about. one of these days I will do it. just massive time investment right now as I do not hunt on the ground much right now. but I will try to make that happen.
heres another tip...go on ebay and search military camo netting....choose whatever size you want and style and cut to suite...i have a roll of 3 or 4ft by 8 or 9ft in woodland, desertland and snowy.....i attached paracord along the edges...i use fallen sticks or surrounding trees to hold it up in whatever shape i want...usually i'll put some dead stuff leaned up against the front for a more natural look as well...its as light as a feather...easy to carry and packs into a small space...and if you shop carefully you can get it pretty cheap too..
Nothing added lately but a bunch of stuff ready to be added when I can edit it. Just been so busy and in the course as you know, I like to get very detailed. Takes time to edit them right and get them uploaded. Will make that happen soon and add the updates to the update chapter list.
This was a very good video. You mentioned a turkey seat. You hunt the trad bow off a low seat like that. I'd like to see more info on that. Maybe you can show us the exact seat setup and you shooting out on one. I have tried so many options for ground seats but just can't get it right.
Glad you liked the video. I actually already recorded a video on a seat and kneeling pad that is not public yet but is on youtube showing the seat I used. I did not shoot out of it in the video but will send you a link in next comment. The reason I can shoot even sitting with my butt on the ground is I shoot with a heavy can't of about 45 degrees and can easily turn the bow horizontal and shoot it great. I practice for that. If you only shoot your bow vertically being low on the ground might be a problem. But I can shoot it better horizontal than I can true vertical.
Thank you. Glad you are enjoying the videos. I put all my hog hunts and deer hunts on my patreon channel now because youtube demonetizes them. But now that I'm in ga full time I have tons of hunting videos hitting that patreon channel.
Ok I'm pissed.......at myself, I am a cheapskate!! Admitting you have a problem is the first step right? Bwaahaha, thanks for the teaser trailer! Really like your content, keep up the "phenomenal" work!!
One thing about hunting the majority of public land in Illinois is I can guarantee you on a weekend hunt you will run into another hunter, those are the kind of spots I have hunted a lot in the past when I had time to hunt, but unfortunately I have yet to find a spot in Illinois with the exception of Shawnee national forest and about a two or 3 mile walk or you don’t run into other people. There is one spot I hunt close to St. Louis that on the weekend you can literally see five or six other hunters from your location no matter where you’re at on the property. And surprisingly deer get killed there every year. But if you can save a few vacation days I have for sure figured out public land during the week is almost like private land
Yep pressure is getting out of control these days. I love the Shawnee! Used to hunt there and always had great adventures. Been 20 years since I been there though! Bet its much more pressured now.
funny you didn't even mention wind at all. You can't just set up behind a tree 20 yards away if the wind ain't right. Unless deer are more tame in north than they are in Mississippi.
@@SamkoTradBow 😂 Love the enthusiasm and effort. Would love to see some of your kills from all of these “gold mine” spots you find in high pressure areas like this wide open clear cut. For what it’s worth, I do find a lot of value in many of your videos. This one just makes me scratch my head a little though.
@@SamkoTradBow Maybe not 4 or 5 year old bucks that are 95% nocturnal anyway, but I have shot dozens in set ups like this. Usually at 8:30-9am, sometimes around 1:30pm is another time I noticed is good. My best was a nice tall and wide 10, many 8s

Great video. I always pick a ground spot perpendicular to their travel. Helps avoid detection since I’m not in their path and gives a broadside shot.
Yep fantastic way to set up!

As a Trad guy I love the vid on ground hunting , again great vid

I've got a feeling I know what spot you're talking about in the metro east. Big deer but tons of hunters
Great advice

Would you use a ground blind in these areas
@marvinsanders5135 sure would. Tuck it in good a couple weeks before season so they get used to it. Other wise make a natural one

Obviously the wind needs to be right or you would not hunt it. I was assuming that was a given.
@@SamkoTradBow well if you are giving a “how to” type video you might want to consider a beginner watching this for the first time.
