I think there doesn't have to be a bad cop sef. Most people who didn't have a good relationship with their parents growing up because of fear of discipline, abuse, etc tend to understand better when they're older or become parents themselves. There's no need to miss those beautiful years and have a strained relationship. I have seen that discipline gets harder to understand for the child when they're approaching pre-teens or generally no longer so dependent on their parents for care and direction but we can try to build a relationship with our kids to ease this. It's my opinion that the reason why the way discipline was done in the past had negative effects is because it was done in the vacuum of a relationship with their children.
On disciplining with the rod, I don't think we should write it off entirely but revolutionise the strategies we use. Subjects like the following should be discussed: we should learn not to discipline in anger; understand that discipline is different from abuse and it could be abuse if taken to far; how should we communicate after discipline (my older sister usually uses the talk it out and hug it out method after spanking her children, she'll explain why she had to, the kids will ask their questions and apologise); what offences will warrant a beating and what other forms of discipline will work (some say a universal no brainer is 'lying' but I think it should still be investigated why the child lied before beating); what 'weapons' should be used and what is off limits, should we spank in public, etc. Discipline is the goal, there's no one size fits all but I think spanking has its place. From taking care of my daughter, I have come to understand that children can sometimes be stubborn, manipulative and foolish and the Bible says the rod is to drive it out. 😅
Also, children are really not all that equipped to understand the consequences of their actions, just as we are just getting to understand why our parents acted the way they did. So I think just explaining or talking to them won't cut it all the time.
Thank you for sharing on the topic❤️

Spanking is a no no, one parent doing it is a no no. Talking to the child, setting good examples for the child to follow, stating out clear rules, taking away what the child loves most and applauding the child when he or she does something good or changes a bad behavior is a better discipline approach. This is what I think you are trying to let parents and would be parents to know. Good job! 👍

Omg same here. Twas I and my dad. He was d bad cop and he would always remind us that we shouldn't think we r too big cos we r still his kids. My mum was d talking one and I listened and obeyed her more than my dad cos I didn't want to ever hurt or break her heart. For my dad, I was rebellious and mum had to even step in to help me realize that he loves me and that I should forget Abt his methods and try to always make him happy and proud. Fast forward to now 10yrs later, my dad turns out to be too permissive and doesn't spank much and my mum turns out to be the 'overtalking' overbearing and nagging mum after 7kids... Whenever my siblings give me report of what's happening at home (as I am married now), I laugh and tell them that they are living in luxury and they should really enjoy it cos I, my elder brother and immediate younger sister were really the scape goats! I'm grateful for the discipline tho. It's shaped me to be the wholesome, responsible and cool headed person that I am today.

I think its okay for kids to do things out t of fear for their parents initially. Understanding and appreciation often comes with maturity and experience. Something children don't have. There are so many things children wouldn't just understand and see. At least its good to have an healthy kind of fear for Daddy and Mummy.

So true, sometimes when we focus on trying to look good to our kids, we might not discipline our kids. They will grow to appreciate you later.

    Yaaaayyy we’re back! 💃🏻💃🏻
I don’t believe in spanking at all and where we are now, it’s police station if you spank.
Dialogue is the best and really there are somethings that children do cos they’re children like climbing, running etc all we can do is keep them safe.
I made up my mind not to spank cos spanking causes a sense of “chaos” in a child’s life. The person who is supposed to love you can violate you like that and it’s okay? It blurs the lines for what you think is acceptable and isn’t. Sometimes it’s subtle in some people and in some it’s vivid and traumatic.
My teacher beat me mercilessly in school, and I couldn’t report cos I thought it was okay.
You can fall today they’ll say sorry and take care of you, you fall tomorrow they shout and beat you for playing rough. So when something happens you can’t talk.
Children can be raised without cane.

There was this day I went out and my dad had warned us never to play and leave the compound but we usually go and get back before he returns from work. On this faithful day,he got home before me and I peeped through the gate and saw his car and decided to go behind and scale the fence and sneak into my room pretending to be sleeping (foolish reasoning of a child) that was how I jumped and landed in front of my dad inside the compound 😭😱. Oh God! Two mouths of Koboko on my back, see me running round the compound 😭. I will never forget that day.

We were not traumatized at all,you can't compare us with children of dis days, parents will not spank dem, teachers cannot spank dem,and you want dem to have good behavior How???
Even d bible says foolishness is tied up in d heart of a child and is d rod of discipline DAT will report it,once a child know you will not beat dem dey behave anyhow.but den wetin I know train ur child as u like if he/she turns out good is d parents dat will enjoy dem,an if bad d parents will still suffer it.

I don't see any big deal in spanking but spank when necessary. My mom was the good cop cos she didn't even know how to spank but my dad was the Baaaad cop. He would spank you before letting you know what you did, which was very annoying but we still turned out well. Parenting isnt easy

I believe that spanking a child according to their age when other methods have failed will never kill any child.
Spanking according to the age of a chile and spanking in love will never destroy any child.
There is difference between spanking a child and spanking a child with anger with intention to decorate his/,her body with blisters.
Some kids will never listen without spanking and the bible told us that the rod drives away foolishness from a child.
Disciplining a child is not easy but if we fail to do the needful then we will be left with kids that will be a nuisance to the society in the future.
Teachers are not allowed to correct kids again when they misbehave and parents will not do the work either yet we want to have well behaved kids.
I lecture at the University and the behaviour I witness among some undergraduates bleed my heart.

For me ain't nothing bad in spanking a child, especially when necessary. Growing up though, my mum happened to be the "bad cop"...LOL! My dad was ruthless with his mouth though. Eventually my mum turned out to be my buddy growing up.
