I have always wanted an MSR tent. I have a bunch of MSR gear from snowshoes to stoves and all have been rock solid. I expect nothing more from this tent. What is your favorite backpacking tent?
thank you @outsidechronicles, as a shoulder season camper this was a really helpful review. After using my old 6lb backpacking tent for the last 25 years, I've finally decided to try something new. My first choice was the Nemo Dragonfly OSMO but that rain fly scares me! So I started looking at the 2022 MSR Hubba Hubba and your video answered all of my questions :)
Glad it helped. I still really like the tent. It’s kept me dry in some heavy rain. I still have not gotten any splinters from the poles. @MyLifeOutdoors just did a wind test and the poles were remarkable. The Nemo Dragonfly is also a great tent. It was my second choice, and still go back and forth. I am very happy with the MSR for all of the reasons in the video.
Almost 8 years with mine hubba hubba and I had to fix some small things! But the support was good, and the tent is AWESOME! I’m a thru hiker I did the GR11 with this tent, i it worked perfectly!
That is awesome! Thanks for reinforcing that support was helpful. People have been knocking MSR due to their poor customer service. I am sure it is a case-by-case basis.
One thing a lot of people forget to mention as well on the Hubba hubba is that the walls are near vertical form the floor which is very useful if you are somewhat tall (i am 195cm something like 6"3 in a weird system) and this tent is the only tent i fit in this category.
Yeah, this is why I'm having to sell my Nemo Kunai 2p mountaineering tent, I'm 186cm and hitting the ends getting the end of my bag wet. My MSR Hubba Hubba I don't really have this issue.
I just picked up this tent (1P version) on Amazon for ~$250--very much based on your positive review and what I knew about MSR. I agree, it's a really nice tent. It's going to be mainly used for bikepacking for me, but can also see myself using it for backpacking and even car camping. I had been leaning toward the new Durston X-Dome, but didn't want to wait until April for it. Also, I'm hearing some negative things about the Easton poles for that one. Thanks for the thorough review, even a year later 🙂
You can easily set up the outer first when you have the footprint :) With the new footprints from MSR you have tie the ropes at each corner so you get a little hole for the poles. Set up the poles and then just put the outer over. It's around 1.2kg that way. (msr says .97)
When I was hiking the AT in 1999, MSR was what all the pros had for tents and stoves and some water pumps I think to. One little MSR stove fed 9 of us for a week +
Great review. I've gone for the Freelite 2P as I live in New Zealand and I'm only a 3 season hiker. Very happy with my purchase. Seems most people these days go for the tents that require hiking poles to set up. And these people often don't use the 2 poles which means it's basically the same weight. Just prefer tents with poles personality.
Great to hear! The Freelite was one of my top options, it had many of the same pluses as the Hubba Hubba…and lighter. I just did not choose it b/c of the large cutout like the Tigerwall and Dragonfly. It was a close second! Thanks for the comment, see you outside!
I'm also a Kiwi tramper and I occasionally do winter tramps. I was super blessed to win first prize in a Wilderness Magazine subscriber competition. Prize was the MSR hubba hubba 2 tent plus MSR pocket rocket deluxe stove! 😮😅 I'd love to have the one person tent, however the extra room will be great on long tramps. 😊
You can easily do a fly only pitch by sticking the pole ends into the ground, if it is soft enough. Then just attach your rain fly and clip in the inner tent. Done it a few times in the highlands with considerable downpour and everything was dry inside
Agree! People say you need the groundsheet to set up outer first, which you don’t. You can just fit the outer to the pole system and peg one end then the other.
UK owner here, very satisfied user. Predominantly 3 season use with the odd winter trip. I had no issues using in winter and would use more if I didn't have a hot tent setup for that log fire comfort 😉 solid tent 👍
I recently purchased a Nemo Hornet OSMO 2p... I'm just over 6'-2" When lay inside, im touching on both sides. I also go winter backpacking in snow storm, my previous MSR tent was great. I think I'll be returning the Nemo for MSR. Your input help reinforced my decision. I'm going on a 25 mile 3 day, 2 night through hike next weekend. We shall see how the Nemo tent does.
The Nemo Dragonfly was second choice, it looks like it is 1” longer at 88” compared to 87” of the Hornet. The MSR is shorter at 84”. You will get more diagonal space in the MSR w/o the taper, but still might be small for your height. I am 6’1” for reference.
@xSirBaconx ... I posted videos on both trips... I posted a video on why the Nemo is getting returned, the MSR tent was on sale and got back almost $50. The Nemo was returned after it's first trip.
I know this is old, but great review! Ive had the first two generations of HHs and loved them. The HH2 is very cheap now that the LT is out. Do you have any idea if I can use my NX aluminum poles on this model, if i end up disliking the Syclone poles?
I do not see why not. I believe the ends of the poles are the same and I have to imagine the poles are the same lengths. If you want to send me an email, I can send you pics of the connections and pole tips with measurements for you to compare. mike@outsidechronicles.com
Check out the 2024 MSR Hubba Hubba Bikepacking tent. That is a new model with sort poles designed for cycling trips. I ditched the heavy bag and replaced it with a 20 gram Sea to Summit dry bag. It is lovely.
It's fine if you don't go somewhere hot and if you don't intend to use it for a long time. Its material will degrade over time, becoming sticky and will peel off, making it unusable.
I can't find this tent ir the MSR homepage, they have only hubba hubba NX, and no regular hubba hubba (which you said is old version), is this the same tent?
@@OutsideChronicles no, I am in EU. And meanwhile i figured out that EU and USA versions of the hubba tents differ. In colours and in quality. USA is better, need to find the way how to get it :)

I have a question. I like a bit more space in my tents. Is the 2 person better or is the one person tent big enough?. And if the 2 person tent is better isnt it to heavy for me to carry?. And i heard that the tent has a bit of condensation problem going on, is this true? If so, is it bad?
That is a tough question to answer. I like the 2p even for solo trips. I usually say: 1p is tight, 2p is good for 1 persons, 3p is good for 2 people, etc. I would drop down to a 1p tent if it had sizable vestibules and I wanted to travel ultralight. I have been looking as the Durston X-Mid 1p for that use case. If you get a good 2p tent, there is not that much difference in weight. For example the Hubba Hubba 1p vs. 2p is 2lbs 7oz vs 3lbs 4oz. A 13oz difference is a difference, but I would rather have the space.
Durston 2P Pro is 1lb 5oz (21oz) vs MSR's 3lbs 2oz. Trekking-pole vs Freestanding, but you called for the comparison (then didn't make the comparison), not I. This author will go with Durston's almost 2lbs weight savings every time.
I honestly do not know. The version I have is seam sealed, which is newer than the NX. There was a time the NX used a new stitching that was not sealed and then leaked. I believe MSR started taping the NX. The NX was mainly sold not in US. Let me know what you find out.
Just to add balance from my own experience I had great customer service. I reported a zip tooth was catching on my Elixir 2 making it awkward & with no fuss & pretty quickly they replaced the inner under warranty.
I’ve not had reason to go back to MSR with a problem, but my impression is that they have a reputation for excellent after sales service. Anyone can put a negative comment out there - can you qualify your comment?
