TEMPLES IN CHIANG MAI - Why Women Can't Enter

  • There are almost 300 temples in Chiang Mai, Thailand. However, we share the Thai history behind why women can’t enter some of them. Watch to see our picks for the Top 3 temples in Chiang Mai, and which ones you can’t enter if you are a woman.
If you are coming to travel Thailand on holiday, it’s likely you won’t have nearly enough time to visit all 300 temples in Chiang Mai Thailand. So, we are sharing the 3 best temples in Chiang Mai you should visit to get the biggest diversity in styles and cultures.
The first temple we visited was the Silver Temple Chiang Mai. This temple was easily the most unique temple we have ever seen and it sat beside a silversmith village. The entire temple was plated in silver and metal in 2008 as a tribute to the heavy influence silver had on northern Thai history. So, you’re wondering which temples women can’t enter? The Silver temple is one of them. We love sharing facts about Thailand when we come across them, and this was a piece of Thailand information we could not pass up. As we arrived at the silver temple, sure enough we were greeted with a big “Women can’t enter silver temple” sign. The history behind this Thai rule stems from an old Buddhist rule that states the presence of a woman can disrupt relics and energy that are found throughout the temples. If a women does enter one of the temples in Thailand that is marked as forbidden, it is said they will experience bodily harm.
The next temple is called Wat Chedi Luang and it’s one of the most popular places to visit in Chiang Mai due to it’s central proximity in the Old City. Wat Chedi Luang is a standing piece of Thai history, as it survived an earthquake in the early 1500’s which demolished the top half of the pagoda. One of the more interesting facts about Thailand originated here with a tree planted centuries ago right next to Wat Chedi Luang. It is said that the tree is the protector of the region and if it falls, a big catastrophe will take place.
One of the last, and arguably most magnificent, temples in Chiang Mai we visited was Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. This temple is on everyones list of the top things to do in Chiang Mai. The Doi Suthep Temple is one of the holiest buddhist temples in all of the world, as it is said to hold the shoulder bone of Buddha himself. This makes Wat Phra That Doi Suthep a popular buddhist pilgrimage site and also one of the most culturally rich places to see while you travel Thailand.
If you guys enjoyed seeing our Top 3 list of the best temples in Chiang Mai, give this video a thumbs up! Which temples are you planning on visiting? Are you upset by the Buddhist rule that women can’t enter some temples? We are living in Chiang Mai Thailand for 2 months, so be sure to stick around and see more Thailand travel vlogs. If you want to learn more facts about Thailand, go see our Thailand travel vlogs in Bangkok and Southern Thailand. Also, don’t forget to leave us a comment down below, subscribe, and tell us which temple was your favorite! We will see you guys in the next video. Seeya!

Both of u are good-Americans. You've done homework prior to visit. You care about history (I'm Thai but live in CA for 15 years. I can sense most Americans don't seem to care about history). Stacia used the term "Lanna" (northern Thailand), I'm impressed. Actually, Lanna is not just a dynasty. It was once a Kingdom. After Ayuthaya Kingdom won battles over Lanna, from that point on, Lanna was included as part of Ayuthaya (Later, Thailand). It's similar to England & Scotland story.... As far as my favorite temple in CM, I'd give it to "Wat Umong" (tunnel temple). It looks ancient. There're tunnel / cave system run through the temple, act as path ways to link each chambers...... Overall, u 2 have done really good job in vloging, explaining, etc... and by u 2 have interest in history, that'll enhance your travel experience cuz u explore places in depth. I'd say u 2 are 1% of American tourists who do that, ha ha ha.... P.S. I'll show this vlog to my American neighbors, they don't even know what CM is.

Thank you for this comment!! We love America, but it’s unfortunate to hear that sometimes tourists just go through the motions. Hopefully our videos can help share some information with future travelers ☺️❤️ I saw the tunnel temple, which looked incredible!! Maybe that’s something we will check out soon. Thanks for your added info and we appreciate the support! Cheers to you in Cali 👋

Spent 12 days in Chiang Mai my last trip. Not sure how the Silver Temple slipped my radar.
I think you confirmed my suspicion regarding the Emerald Buddha in this vlog. In Chiang Rai, I visited Wat Phra Kaeo. It also goes by " Temple of the Emerald Buddha." As you mentioned, the "Emerald Buddha" is now in Bangkok., that is what my research prior to trip also confirmed. There is actually a emerald buddha, and one of the finest I've seen. The local monk insisted it was the actual Emerald Buddha. Something I'm sure went awry in the translations.

Great video as usual. These three temples are really beautiful. Love your video.
I could add a bit more info on the forbidden ladies to go into the temple. I'll make it very short.
Thai people believe that the period blood of ladies has witchcraft effect. Therefore if the ladies who are on period go into the temple and step across a sacred item that buried beneath, then the sacred item will lose its positive good luck charming protective effect. They can never know who is on period. So the best way is to forbid all ladies to go into places that have a sacred item.
This is the shortest version I could explain. Hope it helps. ^_^
BTW my fav temple is Wat Phratat Doi Suthep. It is like a heart of Chiang Mai people. (Chiang Mai is my hometown).

I'm not sure about Thai culture but in Indian culture, only a few temples don't allow women for their own health and related issues. There is ALWAYS a reason for any rule in any culture and when you spend a little time researching it all makes sense (at least for that period in time when they came up with the rule) If the rule doesn't make any sense in this age then I'm sure governments/scholars/officials think about bringing changes to these centuries-old cultural rules.

Being a Buddhist myself hard to understand why women were not allowed as it is itself contradictory to Buddha’s philosophy but watching you respect that rule was very noble ! Buddhism in Thailand is heavily influenced by hinduism and also traditional animism or folk religion (basically, spirits and black magic and stuff)... outside of Bangkok, you will get these rules and it's because they're more traditional and they believe in certain superstitions passed on through generations. Thais are not completely "Thai", a lot are mon decent, khmer decent and in Chiang Mai Lanna decent and they kept their own customs for the most part. So, you won't experience the same rules in different parts of Thailand.
(So the world map is misleading but Thailand is bigger than Sweden and stretches from the canadian border to the mexican border of the us. So it's quite a big country with 60 ethnic groups)

I agree that the Silver Temple is indeed unique and one of the best. I've always loved Chiang Mai and I can't wait to be back hopefully for Loi Krathong this year.

    That's interesting !
So you have included Doi Suthep temple's visit in your itinerary. Great !
Previously, I had to walk up and down the steps. And the Entrance have 2 Nagas (one on the Right and the other on the Left side).
Remember, the Batu Caves steps in KL, Malaysia ? It was similar.
1 Btw, you can also buy a Travel Insurance policy.
2 Fyi, towards November to January every year, it is supposed to be the raining (monsoon) season. So, you may like to carry an umbrella.
    Happy holidays.

👍🏼👍🏼Stacia really did her homework!!! Great job! and through Ryan's lens too😃. As for the coins not positively sure but as a local, I think its suppose to be a small donation of some sort just like if you had a pond/fountain where you toss coins and make a wish. Here you pray, make a wish, and stick the coins with the candle wax. Bhuddist monks perhaps use coins to give to the poor or use it for good deeds in the temple.🤔

    Hey DBV!
😖I cringed and felt for Stacia when she whacked her head on that sharp pointy thing. That must’ve been one heck of an ouchie! I know the pain because as an accident prone person myself, I’ve had one too many ouchies over the years, some needing medical attention. One of the hazards, foreign tourists should be aware of while visiting temples in Chiang Mai. When the temple was built, they did not budget in the height of foreigners from the Western Hemisphere... Is the goose egg still there Stacia? 😯
Excellent cinematography and a stirring soundtrack accompanying and synchronized to the images of the motion picture, well done again guys!
The temple(s) run was a great idea, similar to the chicken run.... wait a minute... 🤔...😆
When you pointed at the “No women allowed...” sign, that got me thinking...
Spotted a sign welcoming visitors to Chiang Mai... “Welcome to Chiang Mai. When it’s hot please dress for the body you have, not the body you want thanks”
Also spotted, a sign on a fire exit which reads “ In case of fire, exit building before tweeting about it”
Another sign at a cafe reads “Unattended children will be given espresso and a monkey”
What about this sign on a blackboard at a primary school “Dear algebra, please stop asking us to find your X. She’s never coming back and don’t ask Y”
    Too much? ...
