How to Color Comic Book Pages in Photoshop

  • Welcome back! In this video I talk about my process for coloring my NIGHTSMOKE comic book pages in Photoshop. I basically take the flat colors, change them to the base colors that I want, then add a layer of color over everything to give it all a similar palette. Then I put a Multiply layer on top, and paint in shadows with the Pencil tool. After that, I add some more layers of brushed on light and some special effects.
    If you've got any questions about my process, leave them in the comments and I'll be sure to answer you. Hopefully this is helpful!

    Thanks for sharing! Any reason you prefer to use the Pencil in PS rather than the Lasso fill in Clip? I feel like Lasso Fill saves me a lot of time when I'm doing cell shading.

      Mostly habit! I like shading without anti-aliasing, though, so that if I want to expand the shadow, there won't be any lines in the shadows where the anti-aliasing might have screwed up the fill. When it's reduced down for print, it looks crisp, not jaggedly like you might expect if you zoom in too far. Plus, I like using all the PS layer styles and filters, and all my swatches are there.
      That said, I've been coloring more in Clip on the iPad and I'm digging it, so maybe I should give it a shot. Who knows how much time it would save not having to switch back and forth from the Pencil and Fill tools! Probably more than I think.

      @@ScottD I definitely still prefer PS's simpler interface and like the way brushes work for color more. Lasso fill is just such a killer feature, Adobe really needs to catch up!

      @@DanHaleComics Yeah, I should definitely give the lasso fill more of a shot. It was one of those features I saw and went, "Cool!" and never used again. haha

      @@ScottD Definitely, you can set it to aliased too.

    Scott, I'm a new subscriber that just came across this video...what tablet/monitor/pen setup are you using here to you do your coloring?

      Hey Mark! I’m using a Cintiq 27qhd in this video, but you can really use whatever these days! There are so many good options. I’ve been having a ton of fun just drawing on my iPad Pro recently.

    Is it better to use Illustrator for line work then color in photoshop? I'm fairly new to this I'll draw then upload my pictures. Where would a good starting point be ?

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  2 года назад

      Personally, I only use Illustrator for design work. I can count on one hand the number of artists I know that use it for comic work.
      That said, do whatever works for you!

    I'm a korean artist for comic book. I wanted to know how to work with other country cartoonits.
    I have a question. Do American cartoonits mostly work with photoshop(PC)?

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  3 года назад +2

      Photoshop was pretty much the standard for American Comic Artists, but now a lot of people are now using Clip Studio Paint and Procreate to make their comics, with great success, as well.

    Hi Scott, I use CSP mostly but it doesn't use CMYK. do you color exclusively in photoshop? Do you have to select CMYK in Photoshop? When I color in CSP I screen print CMYK colors and try to match it when I'm painting in CSP. ... appreciate your work!

    • @ScottD

      Hey Stu! Thanks so much for the kind words! I mostly color in PS these days, but sometimes I get lazy and color sketches and things in CSP, especially if I'm just working on my iPad. In PS, though, I still work in RGB to get the full gamut of colors for web, BUT I'll often use Control (or Command on Mac) + Y to swap to the CMYK Preview mode to see what might change. A lot of digital printers can do more colors than just CMYK, so you could get a wider range, but I'll often let InDesign do that conversion for me when I'm making the PDF for the printers, so long as I've made it look good in the CMYK Preview mode. Hope that helps! :)

    How does the color actually works? Why and how the color change when you remove the ink?

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  3 года назад +1

      The colors are on separate Layers from the inks. They don't actually change when I remove the inks, they just look different because they're not in contrast with the black of the inks.

    Scott, do you use photoshop for line work or clip studio as shown in previous videos......or do you mix it?

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD  4 года назад +1

      I use a mix! I use CSP for my layouts/pencils/inks because I love the quickness and line quality I can get with the brush engine there. It's such a light program, but the Perspective Tools and 3D capabilities make it incredibly powerful. Once I've finished with my linework, I'll separate stuff into different colored layers if I need to have Color Holds on different inked parts, and then move to Photoshop to color. I don't know what it is, but I've found that I'm more comfortable with the Saturation levels I get coloring in PS than CSP, for whatever reason. Old dog, new tricks and all that. Plus, I really like using the built in Layer Styles in PS. CSP's Multiply also looks slightly different than PS's Multiply, so I just know it better, since I've been working in it for forever. But I think it all comes down to personal preference! Use whatever is most comfortable for you! :)
