The lineup of FF has changed a few times over the years, but Gene Hoglan and Byron Stroud from Strapping Young Lad both had stints in the FF lineup. This album was a major shift for the band, because the one before it was more of a death metal album. Demanufacture was their introduction to industrial keyboards over their riffs. They were one of the first metal bands to have clean singing and growls/screams in every song, and often backwards. They screamed the verses and sung the choruses, which Killswitch Engage obviously borrowed. FF started around 1989/1990
The title of the song is a reference to a 1987 photograph by the American artist and photographer Andres Serrano. It depicts a small plastic crucifix submerged in a small glass tank of the artist's urine.

Sorry, but you're getting something a little wrong here: That "Killswitch Engage inflection" you're talking about. Killswitch Engage - one of the most influential bands for the metalcore genre - were founded in 1998. This FF album was released on June 13, 1995. Fear Factory were groundbreaking at their time. I think that Adam Dutkiewicz and the rest of KE might have been (partially) inspired by FF. Surely not the other way 'round. But all that probably happened before you even got into metal music - which is totally ok. I just wanted to clarify this.
