- HP ProLiant DL380p Gen 8 server memory tutorial video. Learn more about HP ProLiant DL380p Gen 8 (G8) servers. We will provide with a general system overview and show you how to properly install & configure your memory. This 2U HP server supports two processors utilizing Intel E5-2600 v1 or v2 series CPUs. This is an LGA2011 Socket. There are 24 DIMMs slots in total. You can insert 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB modules. Speeds supported include 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz and all the way up to 1866MHz. DDR2 and DDR4 memory will not work with the DL380p G8. You also cannot use desktop memory. Simply will not work.
There are two types of RAM accepted by the HP DL380p Gen 8 server: ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs). This is very important. The type of RAM you use will effect the total max scalability as well as how you configure your HP server. For starters, you can max out at 768GB (24 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-14900L 1866MHz with Load Reduced Server Memory. On the other hand, ECC Registered memory will only max out at 512GB (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3L-12800R 1600MHz ECC Reg Server Memory. This means not only can you have a higher overall capacity with LRDIMMs, you can also have a faster speed. I will note you can use 1866MHz for 4GB 8GB or 16GB ECC Reg. There are no 1866MHz 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg DIMMs. They simply were never invented.
The reason for only 16 DIMMs with ECC Reg is due to the fact all 32GBs DDR3 ECC module are 4Rx4 (Quad Rank). This is key. ECC Reg is subject to the Rank Rule. If you go over 8 ranks per memory channel, then this breaks the rank rule for HP’s DL380p Gen 8 and the system will throw errors. We will discuss the mystery of the rank rule in depth as well as show the proper way to configure & install memory into your server.
Generation 8 of HP ProLiant DL380p G8 sets the bar high by being the next-generation 2U 2-socket rack server after the HP DL380 G7. Equipped with Intel Xeon E5-2600 v1 or v2 Series Processors and up to 1866 MHz DDR3 memory, HP Proliant DL380p Gen 8 server can provide excellent performance as a home lab server, gaming server or running emails & file sharing for a small to medium business. The configuration flexibility allows DL380p G8 to manage a number of critical applications while being incredibly energy efficient. This is a great choice for clients on a budget who still want a solid enterprise server. Utilize all the memory slots and get maximum performance from your HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server and we will help with some easy upgrade tips.

Thanks for the video, I own this exact server and just purchased some 1866Mhz LRDIMM's from you all for my upgrade to E5 V2. This really helped me understand the difference between all the ram types and what to go with. Thank again :)
Love the feedback! Very happy to hear and appreciate your business.
Still good sever for homelabs
Indeed it is!
I just got 2 of these servers from my job for free debating on what I should do with them Thought about using one for a personal minecraft server.
Sounds like a good idea!
very nice
Appreciate it!
Thank you so much
Appreciate your positive feedback!
very nice
Thank you!
Hi. I have a gen 9 proliant with 12 x 32GB LRDIMMS and a single CPU. I plan to add another CPU. If I move 6 of the DIMMS to the other slots, how will this affect the performance of the guest VM's? Will the CPU from which the memory were taken function less well? Do the VM's just get access to the total CPU and memory resources available or are these split in some way?
Should actually perform better. You will not only have an additional CPU, but you will be utilizing more memory channels which helps balance the load. If you end up needing 12 more 32GBs then please email us at sales@cloudninjas.com. Take care!
Hi Mate , I have this exact server and was running Truenas , Recently I wanted to upgrade a bit so I added a HBA card , 2x PCIe M.2 SSD and a GTX 1660 super ( for plex transcode ) . Now the server fan is at constant 33 - 50 % and its quite noisy in the house . If I remove the PCIe devies , the fans are back to 13% and very quiet . Is there any way to get the fans go quieter ?. Cheers . Emmany
i have the ml350e gen8, i have 8500r 1066 dual rank, 6 of them out of the 12. Someone has the same ram speeds and make, but their quad rank, are you saying then i can only have two of the quad ranks per cpu, and still use the dual ranks to finish out the build with a total of 48gb "(4gb a stick). This works? Thanks.
What bootdrive is common used in these HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server? I read you cannot use an M.2 nvme SSD via Adapter on a PCIe 8x slot for a bootdrive on these typ of server.
SAS SSD is required.
SATA SSD works aswell, as long as you put it in slot 1 of the backplane (or config the boot volume accordingly). NVMe boot only works via grub (on e.g. usb disk). I wasted hours just to find this out.
Yes, they'll boot from a USB stick inserted in the slot on the front panel of the server
Little confused when trying to buy. Do you have to by the LRDIMM in packs of 4, 6,12 etc or can you just keep buying 1x32 gb LRDIMM and slowly upgrade your server?
Technically you could buy 1 at a time. We certainly don't recommend that. Will likely end up with a mix match of modules. We recommend matching sets. Keeping it uniform. Hope it helps. Smash that subscribe. 👍
@@cloudninjas smashed, So here is my project. I want to know more about setting up and maintaining servers. I have 2 websites i maintain on VPS and figured why not just host them on some servers i spin up. They don't have to be very powerful right now but if something changes then i'll invest serious money into upgrading. I bought 2 of these DL380p from ebay and figured if i bought a 32g ram for each cpu (4) then for now i'd be good. So i thought about buying 4 and doing so but i wasn't sure if i had to put all 4 on one cpu or separate them.
Currently i want to run a virtualization OK and create a bunch of different virtual boxes that i could use to host the sites. IF i can do it still learning more. :)
@@law6906 how far did you get? How's it running?
@@MuvaLaNegra I was able to get one of the servers running proxmox with multiple VMs, one of which hosts a website. So just doing some coding on that and another site to be hosted on it then i'll spin up the other server and do another proxmox.
Thanks for the video it helps lot, I have got apoblem on HP ProLiant DL380p G8 Gen8 it starts well but the monitor displays Power saving mode and no display at all, I have tride d/f options but not working any idea! Thanks
Possible a bad display port? Hope you have it figured out.
what rack dimensions can fit this? 600x800?
Its a 2u rack full depth (i dont remember what means in meters full depth)
does it play minecraft
Yes can be used as a gaming server.
Just got one of these for 10 dollars :D
Now that is a steal. Scrap value is higher. And still a good system for home lab.
doname uno para un proyecto jj
