I think the issue is that Dale, despite being a huge conspiracy nut, never really came off as a bigot. Remember that he had no issue with his father being gay and even thought John Redcorn was gay yet had no issue being friends with him. You can definitely see influences of Ralph in Dale, such as being a paranoid conspiracy theorist, but thankfully Mike Judge never pushed Dale into that far of the right wing.

Something did change in a way, those sorts of people didn’t actually vote then and politics was mostly left to the level headed back then. Now the conspiracy people vote and while they always existed, they didn’t have the same influence.

It seems all the popular shows these days have forgotten how to write political and social commentary without resorting to crude humor and unrealistic antagonists.This show openly discusses the changing attitudes on sex without ever dropping a swear, which although not necessary makes it very unique from what we have today. I'd really like to see a show portray a main character who doesn't gel with either political party, like the father here who is exposed to both his liberal children as well as his conservative neighbors. If there's any reason this show wouldn't fly today it'd be because the humor isn't dark enough...
