I'm in complete awe of these instructors. Their earnestness mixed with a plethora of knowledge makes this so interesting from a third person perspective. We need guys like this in high school classrooms.
There's a difference between someone who knows what they are doing, and someone there for a paycheck. I agree, these guys were fantastic.
These instructors likely make about 5 times as much as a typical high school teacher, and work half as many hours. That might be a hint as to why they don't seem "burned out"...

I was going to make my own comment, but yeah. I have a small amount of heli knowledge, and I was blown away by how easy he explained it.

Smarter every day did an AMAZING video on autorotations. Explains everything super well!
Something none of them mention or explain is the disc loading of a helicopter. The heavier the helicopter the more difficult autorotation is to virtually impossible. If you are in a helicopter that weighs a 1000kg and downward air velocity is only 5ms, you only have to descend at 5ms to maintain rotor rpm, but try doing that in a helicopter that weighs 10000+kg with thrust velocity of 30+ms. Arresting such mass with such velocity is very difficult.

I concur that pilots receive training on emergency procedures as part of their training for the type of aircraft they are getting checked out in. Cletus received his training from the MD factory and most pilots don't receive that training..
Love the helo content as a former Blackhawk pilot. I've autorotated hundreds of times. My first flight in NVGs we lost an engine during an autorotation. That'll wake you up in the middle of the night! Waiting on the call to come pick up my Trackhawk and meet you!

It’s rad to watch like a 700 size rc helicopter do a cool autorotation landing, I can’t imagine watching a real helicopter do it in person let alone be the pilot!! Such a sick skill man! Killer job Cleet!
700 is the scale reference for helicopter? Is it a 1-1000 system similar to how I've seen model planes listed as a percentage? Like is that the helicopter equivalent to a 70% scale model airplane? Or is it a different system?
@@goosenotmaverick1156based on a quick search 700 refers to the length of the blades. So the blades would be 700mm long.
i flew aerobatic rc helicopter competitions for years and we have driven tails during autos so we can do all sorts of tricks. and since we run equal pitch positive or negative (i usually had it setup for +11, -11) you can do inverted autos with a pushover near the deck to really wow the crowd... Many different trick autos you can do but the one trick auto i never tried was the blade stop auto. I just never had that kind of disposable cash lol. In rc helis most of us end every flight with autos so that "when" a real failure happens its a walk in the park, usually lol.
Been flying rc planes and drones for years. Helicopters are just too damn expensive to crash so i try not to buy one :D@@wingtipsworld5909

Cleetus is the guy that after a few times practicing, will teach the teacher how to do it better. What a natural on every machine.
What he did was standard basic training for any helicopter pilot. It takes some practice but is not unduly difficult. If it were too difficult, then nobody would be flying helicopters.

Garrett is one of those rare individuals who has the intelligence to understand the theory of things, the tactile ability to feel what's happening, and the personality to convey what he's doing, and what's happening, to his viewers.
It was clear right from the start - and when you throw in the business sense and networks he's developed, for a young man he has a huge future in front of him that he's EARNED, every step of the way.
Of his millions of subscribers, there may be only a couple who could, and can, do this, but as an inspiration to folks, i would hope they realise there are aspects they CAN emulate from what he, and his team, have done!

I've never had an interest in flying a helicopter, or even being in one for that matter. Cleeters explanations of things were very interesting and kept my attention for the entire video. Very good.

Autorotation training is terrifying but one of the most fun things you can do. This kind of training, outside of what's required, is so valuable for when a real failure happens. You can let your body and mind take over and go through everything automatically if you're trained enough. Great job Cleetus.

I LOVE this video!! MD Helicopters are absolutely beautiful!! As Army Blackhawk CrewChief Mechanics our pilots had us train Auto Rotation landings on the Simulators, just in case. That shit was hard, I did it though. To note Helicopter Engine failure can be dealt with if you have enough forward airspeed vs altitude to trade off. But it’s Transmission failure you definitely don’t want. Game over there. BTW Awesome job Cleetus!!!
I've been fascinated by helicopters since childhood, and have wanted to experience autorotation in person, preferably in a controlled situation like that. Thanks so much for this as it will probably be the closest I will ever get.
Join your local Civil Air Patrol! There's probably a helicopter pilot in a C.A.P. Squadron near you that would be willing to take you up.
If not, I'm sure there's an aeroplane pilot with a Cessna. Piper, etc. in one of those Squadrons near you and they might also do STOL flying.
There could even be a spot for training on a Civil Air Patrol "air search and rescue team" as a navigator or spotter, if you're interested in flying regularly, but don't really have the money.
Honestly love the flying content. As someone whose been here since turbo whistles in the c7, I keep coming back for what's new. This is great content Cleet!

For anyone interested in a great book, look at "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason about flying Hueys in Vietnam. They used to be able to clear their own LZ with those giant blades, trimming small trees and brush on the way in. Those giant twin blades stored so much energy that they could be sitting on the ground, fail the engine then pick up the helicopter into a hover, spin it around 360 degrees and put it back down on the ground. Great read by some very young, brave dudes.

Great job Cleeter! I had the auto gyro experience from angels 1 (1000'), It really blew my mind how well the bird stayed aloft. It flew as if we still had power, It was incredible! The instructor I flew with actually cut the engine, As it was a piston engine not turbine. The rate of decent was barely noticable! Thanks for sharing! Many people don't realize that the majority of Helicopter accidents are not caused by the Helicopter itself, But pilot error/misjudgement. See ya next video!

It’s cool to see other people fall in love with rotor wing avaiation. As a helicopter gunner I had the opportunity to do so many badass things, see crazy things, and land in wild place. I was also able to be apart of saving peoples lives. Best job I ever had!

I used to think that once the engine stopped, it was game over. Now, I have newfound hope, as long as there are no trees or obstacles in the way.
During an auto, one can still maneuver to avoid obstacles.
Had me holding my breath and grabbing my seat the first couple landings! Amazing stuff!

Something about this guy I don't get it. He is really attuned to what he is doing and has great hand eye and his built in gyroscope allows him to operate any type of vehicle. Important skills to have so if it hits the fan you'll know what to do and walk away. Like playing in a big parking lot in the snow taught me what my car does and how to get out of it if it goes bad. Was great fun doing donuts and has saved my butt many times since 👍
That's exactly how I was taught to drive in snow. We went out driving, dad stopped and stuck me behind the wheel, randomly pulling E brake handle to simulate a random loss of traction. It taught me a lot about car control, and it's the first thing I do every winter to make sure I haven't lost the muscle memory.
This winter it's my wife's turn. She's a great driver but no experience in winter weather as a driver, only a passenger.
@@goosenotmaverick1156 I did it on my own in my Dart. We used to have a dog track close by where I lived so huge parking lot empty during the winter. Every time it snowed I'd go there and play. I put sway bars and a sure grip in it and had great fun relearning how to drive the car again. Posi really changed how the car reacted but once I knew what it did I was drifting and spinning it around the nose and other dumb stuff.
@@69Dartman oh yeah that'll change the dynamic for sure, sounds like fun! I generally go to our local mall parking lot. The old Sears is a gym and a government office now, and the JcPenney is dead even in the best weather. For the most part nobody even cares, as long as we don't interfere with business or crash into anything and damage it (sometimes a car gets broken but rare) the cops don't kick anyone out. It's honestly a pretty healthy way for a lot of the younger crowd to go teach themselves and have a little fun where everyone has consented to the risk. It's totally unorganized and unplanned, but it tends to work really well for the area. Last year there was every kind of car. I see all sorts hanging out and chatting, taking their respectful turns at hooning. I was impressed by the younger crowd from our area, for sure.
There were trucks, Ford fusions (multiple, as in 3 or 4 different ones)
The typical challenger, charger, 300, etc.

Old stuff and new, it gave me some faith in humanity last year for a few moments.
@@goosenotmaverick1156 Oh yeah, the cops never bothered me or anyone else doing it. It would get really busy sometimes so you had to keep your head on a swivel and pick your spots. I almost slid into a pole one time and nothing was working so I tapped the brakes and it just stopped 🤔 usually hitting the brakes was the last thing you'd do and just made things worse. Guess between the friction and the snow piling up in front of the tires it worked.
Like I told teeth in turbos I'm glad to see you guys are taking your hobby very seriously. Helicopters and planes are not toys.

I got my PPL SEL back in 2002. I was checked out in a C150, C172, and C182. The last plane I flew had a full Garmin 1000 sweet. I'm no longer current. Around 6 years ago a bought a helicopter ride in Las Vegas. It was a Sweitzer 300. The instructor was very thorough. We practiced ground maneuvers, hovering and such. when we actually got flying he gave me the controls. I don't know if he was trying to sell me lessons, but he said I was a natural and did really well. Well I live in CA, so I obviously couldn't take lessons from him, but it was a great time. Guy who has the record for the highest flight in a helicopter also has the record for a landing with no engine on when landing. Made both records in 1 flight, accidently.

What a blast to watch. I learned to fly helicopters at Falcon Field in 2019. I spent hours on that ramp in a Schweizer 300, it was a blast watching those MDs doing their thing.

I fly to/from work in the offshore oilfield industry 2+ times a month. Pilots in Bell 407s we fly sometimes have tried to explain this to me (as a passenger up front with them via headset) and I've always wondered if I could land the bird with a pilot incapacitated... This makes me way more confident now so thanks!!
Collected Rudder and stick. It’s a balancing act. Flying the helo isnt the hard part. It’s landing because as you slow down there’s no stabilizing force counteracting rotor torque so you have to use rudder to negate it.

I have close to 7000 hrs of instruction given in helicopters and I have to say MD has some good instructors! Great job managing the kinetic and potential energies in the autorotations!
Idk if people appreciate how fast cleeter picked up this whole rotary wing piloting stuff. I sit in the back of HH-60 Pavehawks as an engineer so I’ve watched my share of stick shakers and he seems to have learned so much, so fast.
Autos are fun as hell with rc's. Sounds like it just multiplies with size. So HELL YEAH dude!!!
