Upgrade an Old Dresser with Metal Drawer Slides (Under-Mount)

  • If you have a vintage dresser with broken or malfunctioning drawers an easy way to fix it up is to upgrade it with some metal drawer slides. Generally these slides are mounted vertically (they are stronger that way) but in some instances there is only space to mount them under the drawers (still easily supports 30lbs+). On this mid-century dresser there was only about .25 inches on either side of the drawer, only half the needed space for the .5 inch thick slides. Every dresser is different, in this how-to I will show you some possible strategies for making your old dresser like-new!
    The Amazon link below is for similar drawer slides used in this video:

    Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ruclips.net/user/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

    I have an old armoire dresser with wood slides that have badly splintered and split over the years. It has 6 drawers and one is completely stuck now, and two more are on the way out. It’s a beautiful piece made out of solid wood that weighs about 9000 lbs, and it’s a hassle to move, but I love it. I’m going to see if I can pull this off. Thanks for the information.

    • @The3DHandyman

      Best of luck! You can always experiment with one drawer first (the one in worst shape?) and figure out a process that works before jumping into the rest of them.

      This can be a challenging process without a lot of tools. There is a possibility that your local hardware store stocks wood of the appropriate thickness for this type of fix. Those stores will often cut the wood for you was well, though with lots of cuts they may charge you for the service. It might be worth a look

    I just bought a beautiful set of old dressers and hope to do this to them. Your video is exactly the tutorial I was looking for! One question - did you remove the center mount from the dresser? Any reason we wouldn't need to also remove the original center mount mechanism from the drawer as well? Thanks!

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  Год назад

      Happy to help! If I remember correctly, I left the center mount on the dresser side but removed the plastic guide on the drawer side. In this case, there was no contact between the drawer and the center mount after the plastic guide was removed. If there is no contact between the drawer and the mount after the metal slides have been set up there should be no reason to remove it.

  • @rem45acp
    @rem45acp 2 года назад +1

    I never would have thought of using the side mount drawer slides (which are very nice) on the bottom of the drawer! Brilliant. I'm restoring my wife's dresser. It's got the classic H shaped wooded guide in the frame, lowered slightly and screwed in at the front, and stapled in at the back (lazy). The bottom of the drawer has these rusted metal tracks, that are stapled at the drawer face end, and it wraps around and screws into the back end of the drawer.
    I really wanted to upgrade to the ball bearing sliders on the sides of the drawer, but there's so much space i would have to add several pieces of material in all directions to make that possible. How do you know what thickness to make the wooden pieces you added to the dresser and the drawer? I don't have access to a planer or jointer...Please explain...how can I select the right thickness of board

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  2 года назад

      Good questions! Be sure to select slides that have a high enough weight rating for use in this configuration. Sometimes they say on the slides themselves. Otherwise take the standard rating and a cut it in half (at least). Big heavy solid wood drawers may not be ideal for this.
      As for the thickness of board, this took some creative measuring and I think I made some samples before the rest of the set. Without a planer or jointer you could potentially buy some very thin and inexpensive material and layer it up as needed. Just wander the lumber/building material isles until you find something that might work. There may also happen to be a material of the perfect thickness if you are lucky. So, good luck!
      Another idea... If you have a table saw you could cut 2x4s into slats of the correct thickness.

    If I put small boards on the bottom of the drawer hole to raise it for attaching the slide, I have about 1/2 or maybe 9/16ths of an inch between the drawer opening and the bottom of my actual drawer. If the slides are 1/2 inch, would I need to use additional boards on the underside of the drawers themselves? Seems like with so much precision that the 1/16th inch may make a difference-- could I just add a thin washer between the bolt in this case? My drawer bottoms are so thin that would this even be practical? I really want to fix up this dresser I just got!

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  8 месяцев назад

      The washer could work. As long as there is some kind of board under the drawer it will help give it a bit more strength. Every situation is different though. Good luck!

    Thank you sir! Can I just clarify, are these regular side mounting ball bearing slides, but you used them under the drawer instead?

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  2 года назад +2

      Correct. It's my understanding that the side mounted slides can be used in this way without issue as long as the drawers are not particularly heavy.
      A good rule might be to take the stated weight rating on the drawer slides and reduce it by half for the undermount configuration.
      So far these slides are still working well after 4 years or so.

    Drawer slide links are all side mount - aren’t these undermount slides? If so - what do you recommend? Need 14” - thanks

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  Год назад

      Most slides will work as an undermount if the weight load is low. If your drawers are heavy, I suggest buying something that is rated for undermounting. A place like Rockler or Woodcraft or another professional woodworking store would have something better. The slides will just cost more.

    • @The3DHandyman
      @The3DHandyman  2 года назад

      It's hard to say. The heavy oak drawers might be too much for the cheap drawer slides in the "undermount" position. It would be better to mount them vertically, if possible.
      If it does work, it might be $50 or $60 for the slides.

      Any drawer slides will do. I did this project 3 years ago and the exact drawer slides are no longer available. If I remember correctly they came in a box of 20 and were about $2 each. If you can afford to use better quality slides, that might be a good idea but so far the cheap ones are still working fine. The 16" slides allowed the drawers to side out completely. Your drawers may be more deep and require a different size slide. Best of luck with your project!
