Tchaikovsky's Christmas

  • Many years ago, while listening to Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony some remarkable similarities occurred to me. The sombre introductory clarinet theme of the first movement reminded me of "Deck the Halls with boughs of Holly", whilst the main theme that followed reminded me of "I saw three ships come sailing in". It occurred to me to think through these similarities and produce a reworked movement with a stronger allusion to the two Christmas melodies.
Part of my re-working including shortening the movement considerably and replacing most of the original development with the basic development section of Tchaikovsky's First Symphony's 1st movement. That allowed me more flexibility to flesh out my ideas about "Tchaikovsky-fying" the Christmas music. The new, leaner development leads more directly into a coda built upon Tchaikovsky's conclusion to the 5th.
I hope you enjoy this musical experiment.
