The original conceptions for Assassin's creed carried a lot of fascinating and original storytelling ideas that made for such an interesting narrative. In the light of the weaker narratives we have been seeing recently, I wanted to make a video trying to explain why the franchises is so good at creating a developed and immersive world.

Assasin's Creed is like The Avatar The Last Airbender universe
in the sense that there are many many timelines that you can jump to and still have an interesting story. So many Avatars that we could have shows about and so many Assasisn/Templars in different eras that could be explored.

I love your videos so much because they are a niche part of the assassins creed community on RUclips, you don’t just make tier lists and rankings and stuff, you analyze the philosophy and details of the game that create the setting and fantasy I fell in love with. No other video game has enveloped me and enthralled me in its lore the way AC has. I truly believe it has one of the best narratives in any video game

  • @ac_nerd9794

I agree with some of the things you said regarding AC's worldbuilding which is excellent. I would add that the series not only brings in an audience for the world being explored, but also because people want to see what the new AC game will add to the table. It's not even hard to see that all three of the RPG protagonists have love just as much as older protagonists. Kassandra is arguably one of the most liked even though so many suppised AC fans hate her. She is quite iconic and is a stepping point for some fans just like Edward or even Ezio migjt have been for other fans. I don't think the game are as much fantasy as people let on. Take Odyssey for example. Every mythological aspect is directly tied to those who came before. The monsters are experiments, people tortured and used that took the form of a creature due to not being capable to withstand the Apple of Eden. They weren't compatible due to not having Isu blood and lived for generations. Being a super technological advanced race means there is much we still don't know about them so Odyssey introducing a program that would eventually bring Kassandra or Alexios as a heir to the Isu while also being human. It brings a dynamic not yet seen in the franchise. I'd also note that Altair making a gun with the knowledge he gained from the Apple is no different than an Isu weapon capable of making the user a demigod. He learned and mastered a piece of advanced technology. Kassandra/Alexios had to master the spear. Upgrading the spear and unlocking abilities in the game shows how far they have come through their journey and how well adapted they are at using such an item. Eivor also has a lot of lore that doesn't break the lore and adds to the universe. His visions which are mythological are only in his head. This is something people don't mention when discussing Valhalla. 90% of the so-called fantasy elements are actually in his head. There are many cosmetics that are fantastical but almost all of them are optional. There are creative liberties in this series. The series has always been more of a historical fantasy than a sci-fi series. The modern day doesn't draw people into the franchise. It isn't used in the cinematic trailers nor is gameplay in the modern day used for gameplay reveals because it's not what makes the franchise. The settings we visit and worlds we visit make the memories. Discovering this alternate timeline that ultimately questions our own, also makes us want to know more about our own history. After playing Odyssey, just think about the awesome surprise while reading my World history textbook. Brasidas and Kleon are both mentioned and the book states both died in the very battle Odyssey portrays. Later I read how Cesare Borgia was seen by some man as a desirable prince. He isn't caught up in making a perfect world but one with order through any means necessary. That might not be the exact wording but you get the point. AC would have never garnered as much attention if the modern day was the bulk of the game. It's just not as important imo and it needs to be dropped. Even Desmond wasn't that good. Altair was hardly even written well, but he's much more likeable because we spend more time with him in his game. If the AC movie had spent more time in the animus giving us more of Aguilar, the movie would have been better. I know not everyone agrees with me on this but that's what I think.
I would say its also not completely lore-breaking with dialogue options. Some have come up with theories as how this can be. One such theory proposes that the options we see are merely what the protagonist is thinking making with the player decision ultimately being the memory. Kassandra and Alexios also might have made different decisions im different quests or scenarios. Their world is very grey as hardly anybody we meet is morally better than another. We meet killers every day even though some are just farmers. They ask the misthios for vengeance or justice. Commanders may ask for you to kill other commanders. This is no less morally questionable than the many stealth kills one may continuously earn in Unity. If we see the assassins only kill when required, that would mean all the extra time we spend in game would be not based in memory. It seems like a double standard to some extent. I have thousands of kills in Origins and its highly unlikely every kill I have is what Bayek actually did. Does that mean I should only count kills earned during the main story or 100% completion? Everything after wouldn't have happened due to not being a memory. If you read this all, I commend you and thank you for any response as this was a lot.

recently I got hyperfixated on AC (again), and found your channel, after finishing black flag and actually understanding it's story, I wanted to create a TTRPG game in the AC universe, searching I found a Ubisoft approved TTRPG that was being developed about AC
your understanding of the series themes and concepts, that AC is a Sci-fi series about reliving the past, I noticed those themes in the TTRPG
you create a descendant, with a genetic memory of an ancestor, using the animus to create bleeding effect, transferring the ancestor's skills to the descendant, who tries to find the pieces of eden and defeat the templars (and viceverse, as you can play as a templar)
the TTRPG believes in AC as a Scifi in the same way you talk about the game, the mechanics are made in the sense of using the past to aid your tasks in the future, even if you roleplay as two different characters, the actual character is the one with the static level, the one who actually levels up and their bleeding effect takes place, you can lose synchronization within the animus, you can fail, a lot, die even, but as a fail in the animus it only halts your progress
is still in a sort of Beta, but says a lot of what AC is actually about when you see the details
and just as the game, is really basic in gameplay, is the concepts and imagination that does the heavy lifting, Style over Substence if you like

The amount of small details you can miss or just not really think about is also something many fictional worlds lack. Simple example would be the emails from Juno in AC3. The binary on the sender line, when converted to plain OLD ascii, reads JUNO. I understand that you as a dev want people to see all the stuff you put in, as it is work done, but it's something I miss from the olden times (90's mainly), that you had to go around exploring stuff and finding things out by yourself. One of the reasons I really loved the investigation missions in The Secret World.

7:27 I recommend watching the video on Machiavelli by OSP because Machiavelli was NOT a kiss up to Tyrants but an avid fanboy of REPUBLICS. His book the Prince (which is what I assume that you’re referring to) was not a nifty how to book but rather a manuscript that exposes the tactics, ploys and various techniques that Princes use to sieze, maintain and hold onto power for “those who read it intentionally” the book is meant to be read IRONICALLY. Another book he wrote was a love letter to republics so to say that Machiavelli would have been in line with the Templars is utter nonsense and bullshit.
Seriously, dude, check out OSP Blue’s video on Machiavelli, he explains it better than me

when u start speaking about how the memory in the dna, that is replayed cant be changed, then you will have to be prepared for the argument, that we are not replaying actual memories, but the animus is preparing it for us as a simulation and tries to rebuild it as much as possible for us to synchronize with some use of documented history data combined with the data from the dna, bc the further in the past we look, the more unstable the dna memories are. altair, ezio etc. havent actually run their whole life exactly step for step like desmond, abstergo workers etc. (player) does. thats why we have options to synchronize like "dont kill guards for 100% or kill them in that specific way for 100%". when altair etc. dies hes not dying - its desmond etc. that is desyncrhonizing with the ancestor, when he kills civillians we just get a popup that he didnt do that. i personally can understand your feelings, and would prefer not to have those options as everyone thats playing ac isnt thinking that its synchronization, theyre thinking its replaying memories that cant be changed. this stance i saw in the internet and i think it has some base in it.

I do agree that the older Assassins Creed games can be seen as science fiction. And they were much more grounded than the later RPG games which are too much fantasy to my liking.
I would love for the series to return to that more grounded science fiction way of explaining the ISU technology and moving away from the mythological fantasy direction it has now.
And I would also prefer no dialog choices, with good writing!
I might be a bit simple, but I don’t think it belongs in the franchise for the exact same reasons you stated. That we are “reliving a memory”.
I would like to add that I also would prefer that men and women characters fight differently. I think that seeing a slender woman taking down a huge man like a brutish warrior is a bit too much.
I don’t think women characters should be less deadly, or smaller men for that matter, only that they take down their targets a bit more realistically.
But in general, men are stronger than women, so the takedown animations should reflect such things.
Kassandra is a very good example in what I mean. I do not care if she had som special blood or whatever.
The teams making these games are quite big and I don’t see why they can’t make animations, takedowns and move-sets a bit more realistic on this front.
    One can dream…

I agree, with everything you said one of the criticism I have is that the combat is repetitive in the RPG games. In the old games it’s little bit repetitive but the difference is that you kill the enemy few times and you move on but the annoying thing is that AC odyssey ‘s enemies are a joke one time the enemy was close to his death and then all of the sudden the enemy heals himself. Something that I appreciate in every AC games is the music the music in the each game are master pieces
