- Such a tough subject to figure out as you begin to grow a collection of vocabulary on the drum set. In this video lesson I will show you one of the many ways I practice creating a sense of flow in my own playing. I hope you enjoy it :)

My actual hero. Quality world class player and world class teacher.
Thanks so much Brett! That means the world to me
your a class act Mike keep up the good work!!! hey maybe you should look into being a comedian as well???
Please do a lesson entirely on drum-speak, you are an absolute genius at it!
This is so valuable. I usually pick a fill idea, or a few fill ideas, for the genre I'm playing for a certain gig, and just play variations all night on those few fills. Heck! I even do that with my grooves. But we always need that anchor, the thing we know so well that we can always come back to and make it interesting every time.
Omg you really made my day with those onomatopoeias ^^
P.S
It was a really nasty day btw
Haha. That Benny Grebbin' part was awesome. Love you, Mike! ❤️
This is actually the best lesson I have had in my 10 years of drumming.
Barbecue sauce, oh my god, stay right there.
Can't wait to "Benny Greb" during my next practice session!
Don't forget a lemonade and black cherry too
"you just have to do that a couple of trillion times....." .... pretty much nails everything about lerning an instrument.
i've been wondering how to practice this forever, i never knew where to turn to though. you are the ogrelord, mike johnston
always applaud the sense of fun, but also being realistic and encouraging. much applause. owe you a beverage next time you're in memphis.
Hey Mike! Csikszentmihalyi is a human/education psychologist who talks about the beauty and state of flow. Highly recommend! I think you'd find it find it interesting with you're fascination in science
Maybe i dont need all that sauce at the end... just maybe. But im still all for it ! :D
This is so helpful. I've been practicing a tonne of co-ordination and building linear facility over the past year but haven't been able to find a way to practice applying outside of very specific contexts. This exercise is a great way to practice applying co-ordination to multiple musical scenarios and to build on phrasing. Thanks!
That's great to hear Dom!
Up down turn around pick a pail of paradiddles. Love your drum sounds man.
Please let me know when you finally decide to record a vocal-only drum-skat album. And thanks for this flow video. Very helpful!
That's a wrap!
Maybe unrelated to the video (which is great as always), I gotta say your room, video and lighting looks awesome.
What camera is that to your left? That looks damn expensive
dude i don't know what it is, but ever time i watch one of your lessons it just so easy to take in. i like understand it instantly
OMG, this is just sheer skill at both drumming and teaching. I would pay big bucks to have this guy teach me private lessons. When do we start? lol
RUclips should introduce HAHA reaction buttons! Your sense of humor is hilarious!
Oh great! I almost fell off my chair when you did those mouth patterns...and then the Gavin in the end...hmmmmm. :D Awesome lesson!
Fantastic lesson Mike. I love your teaching style.
Do you have any lessons on your site on how to do triple strokes using slide technique? Considering buying a membership on your site. Thanks mike!
These lessons are awesome, but can you do even simpler first examples? It so easy to get distracted by your playing ability and not be able to "improvise" because the example is more complex than my improvising capabilities.
Wonderful advice! Love the examples and insistence on getting the anchor pattern commuted to muscle memory first. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
So excited to try this. Never had it explained like this before. Thanks so much
Another way to learn this is to just listen to a lot of music, you will slowly ingrain those ideas and when the time comes you'll use them. Special recommendation would be to listen to Bernard purdie.
I love mike's vocabulary 😂😂 you are the man! no doubt one of the living legends
mike i dont understand what you saying about 1 like knowing the one is important right so we must always not rush in 1 is that what you explaining here in the beginning of video can you elaborate please Mike
Literally the easiest way this has been laid out with practical practise tips and not just someone gospel chopping all over the place...
I want to bennygreb all day long. But how much bennygrebbing is too much bennygrebbing?
Thank you Mike for the hot sauce and spicy green sauce brother…
Any chance you wouldn't mind sharing what cameras are used in your lessons?
Hilarious and inspiring. A great blend. Cheers Mike!
Mike, you make learning this instrument fun! I swear this video was just for me...missed "Thunder Butter" though... hope it's ok...
Thanks my friend, that is my goal! Don't worry about TB, she's doing just fine and will be back on the kit soon :)
Whats that snare ? Great sound ! looks like a vintage marching snare ?
yo mike, i wish you uploaded more to youtube, youre so good at communicating what you do! much love
Well I do have a few hundred lessons on my website, lol. So I do make new lessons every week but only so many can be free. I hope you understand :)
totally understand, not only that but what you have put on youtube over the years has helped me massively! unfortunately as a uni student not only is access to a kit an issue but so is budgeting xD i guess i just need to sort out my priorities ;) much love
Hey Mike how are you? Being a very busy person I hope somehow you'll read this. I have a question about the "how to practice flow" video. I'm starting to memorize the pattern you gave, so the next step is introducing the dinamics, right? The question is: Should I pre define the accents and dinamics or are they supposed to come naturaly by improvisation? Hope it's not a stupid question, I just think this exercise will help me alot, I'm a little too mechanic when I play...Cheers and thanks!
nice, just as always mike!
Couple trillion times
Oh Mike, you slay me
Genius stuff Mike
Hey Mike how are U man?

Hahaha @2:50 SAME NOTE!
You know what... I'll just play 4/4 boom-tak another trillion times before going here :x
only guy who preaches what he teaches !
Unbeliavable player, very exotic and logical approach in same time.
I learned soooo much 'about fluidity in playing. His combinations and variations in 6, 9, 12 stroke rolls/fills are priceless!!!
Thanks Mike.
Best regards from Belgrade, Serbia.
Zoran
Hahahah pat boon Debby boon barbecue sauce! 😂❤️
what cymbals are you using?
Im just moderately familiar with Mike Johnson but I gotta say this is a great subject to discuss because it almost NEVER gets discussed. Mike was very fun to watch and he has a great sense of humour as well!!! definately enjoyed this!!!
I ask my teacher how to create a solo section and he kinda told me to build up solo from scratch and learn it by heart......And then I went on RUclips and watch this preaching video (yeah that's definitely not a lesson for ......it makes too much sense for a simple lesson, that's preaching !!) and you changed my understanding of what soloing and certainly drumming too for ever !
Please, and i guess everyone will agree : Keep being you because we need YOU ! (for real, who says BBQ sauce in a drumming lesson right ? )
Thank You bro ! Blessings from Martinique, F.W.I
Toca d+ sou muito fã desse batera. 🇧🇷
Dude!... You're just the best teacher around, period!!!! Thanks for teaching us old school groove dogs new tricks.
Probably the most useful piece of information and encouragement regarding drums I've ever found on RUclips, and the internet. Thank you, sir.
hi Mike, a question... when we re-Orchestre & improvise... do you mean that kicks need to stay kicks or they could be threated as sixteens like others and plays by hands ?
Very clear as always. Let's practice. Thanks Mike! ;)
Glad you like it my friend :)
Mike it's so much fun to watch you play the drums and explain what your doing there! How can somebody be so talented and such an incredible human being?! You are so inspiring man!
Am "afraid" Buddy couldn't've played like than... ; )
thank u man for your lessons
Incredible drummer and teacher, two things that rarely meet. Thanks for your instruction, Mike.
This od insanenly good tip!! Ive watched Daves, Steves etc non of them gave me so much things to Think of and Play to
How is not more popular? I love his modesty, but come on , he is pure fire. Thanks for all the FREE content that you and your crew put out on the internet.
I remember growing up in middle school (8th grade) having stumbled upon Mike Johnston Vater speed chart with the different foot combinations and hand-linear combinations in which I use too air drum in band class on the floor at church, just any where I could practice because I have never physically owned a drumset and yet here I am at 22 years old still using those same combinations. I know I said a lot but thanks Mr. Johnston for always putting out fresh content for drummers through the years 👍
Are you related to Marshall Mathers?
Subscribed after barbeque sauce
Love the comment at 3:40 about creating flow. So true, he just makes it look ridiculously easy
True respect bro and great insight!!! Drums are way of life!!!
That's beautiful and actually it just solved my problem😉
Why is he using a 24 inch ride as a crash?
Iblibli bouu mmmmm !!!! 2:48
hey mike can u do a lesson about how to develop sound? like different sound for different music
Benny Grebbin Benny Grebbin xD
Is the side camera automated ?
Really nice. Thanks.
So sweet....I just got a cavity! On another note, how long have you had the moving camera mount? Adds a nice feel to the feel!
I've actually been using the slider in all of my videos for the past two years. Usually it's on the other side of my kit. Maybe that's why you noticed it this time.
Ah, gotcha. Now I'm going to re-watch those other vids!
You nailed the representation of the playin' without flow. I was laughing to the tears!
👍👍
Best video I’ve seen in my entire life as a drummer. Thank you!!!!
You're such an incredible teacher and player some of your licks have stuck with me for years bro thanks for what you do mike
