No, but seriously, you're not only instantly killing both nerve centers of the crab intantaniously (thereby killing the crab in the absolute most humane way), you also perfectly remove the potentially toxic guts AND bag all refuse in one swift move. You are a MASTER. Thanks again for sharing this.
Agreed. But growth mindset... crazy amount of unnecessary plastic use here. As a long time crabber and someone who cares about the impact of plastics on our oceans, you can do better with the gloves (which you start with and then rightfully discard) and the plastic lined plastic bucket... constructive feedback. Hopefully it comes across as such.
@@ungerroberts Fair point. I suppose one could use compostable garbage bags and re-usable gloves (or no gloves like me). But if you live in a city, you really have to bag the crab guts. The reek from the trash can will gag the entire neighborhood.
I feel a little bit better about cleaning crab after watching this video. I watched 2-3 others that were BRUTAL. I appreciate the warnings you give, and the the explanations on how to be more humane. Thank you.
I watched a few videos on methods for cleaning Dungies since I am unfamiliar. I almost couldn't watch this, but after reading the comments about it really being more humane I watched, learned, and went for it. Worked really well. The first one was a little rough, but the second was clean. Thanks for sharing this method, I would do it again without question. Feels better than boiling it alive.
I respect that you are still learning like the rest of us and tell us new ways you found. I’ve got a job in Neskowin tomorrow I think I’ll throw my surf stuff in the work van and hopefully catch some perch if I have the time.
Just caught my first Dungeness crabs of the year yesterday and cooking them up today. Your method is quick, humane and took less than 30 seconds per crab. Thanks for the video. Can’t wait to dip them in butter or horseradish cocktail sauce.....Yum!
Thank you soo much, youngster! I was not going to make my Gumbo because I have never cleaned live crabs until I found your video!!! Great vid, thanks for sharing your technique! I’m the same, felt queasy about killing the crabs, but put them on ice and was able to clean 5 in less than 10 minutes!
Hay man, Thanks for the video. I just moved to the coats of BC from Nova Scotia and caught my first Dungeness crabs today, I watched your video to see how to clean them, way more simple then I had expected.
I work at a crab processing plant where we kill/clean thousands of pounds of these fellas every day. Everyone who works there has a slightly different way of doing it. Some are more messy than others (since we are processing them en masse, we aren't quite so concerned about cleanliness apart from a thorough hose-down and scrub after the shift is over.) I plan on trying this method to see if it feels more comfortable, since whatever method is used depends on what feels comfortable and more natural for the person doing it.
"i dont like killing fish, killing crab" this is the mark of a responsible harvester. Feeling thankful for the feast, thankful for the crab, not going to harvest more than you need.
This method works great. Don’t need to smash it on the bucket quite as hard as this guy but it’s not hurting anything doing so. Best way to clean Dungeness crabs
I thought I was having a stroke with the pink bucket for a second..lol. But you da homie for this. Limited out on crab yesterday and going to use this method to clean
Wow I've never seen them done like this before i like this way a whole lot better, just trying to learn how to process these for my trip to the crabfest this weekend 🙃
I first saw a product called the Crack & Crab produced in Oregon. A very cool cleaning system but it isn't cheap. Then I saw this video and it saved me some money. I have only gotten to use it on cooked crab but it sure was faster then the normal cleaning. I ground off the lip of the bucket and gave it a bevel so it's thinner. Just a stout bump on the back of the shell and the crab is split. Like most people I know, I don't care for the butter so it isn't a big deal to me. Good vid, good idea and it works great.
Thanks dude. We are camp hosting at Half Moon Bay in Oregon out of Winchester Bay and just got to crab traps. Can you give me any advice about getting the sand out? We did get one crab and it was sandy. How do we avoid sand because it's disgusting! Lol.
This is the way I like my crab, without all the innards in the steamer. Just steam for 14 minutes and add lemon and butter. We usually clean the crab on the edge of the dock instead of the edge of a bucket, so that the organic stuff will sink and provide food to the smaller crab that are there.
Watching this sure made me feel asian... I practically screamed "you're wasting the good stuff!" The innards (tomalley) are only potentially toxic during an active shellfish warning.
I would love to try it with the stuff in there cause I hear a lot about how it has a lot of flavor. How do you cook it, just regular like you would normally cook it???
How long do you boil the crabs using this method when you're ready to eat them? Can you use this same "gutting/killing" technique if you decided to boil them first? -- I'm stoked to try this!!! Thank you
Chad Kinkela I would cook before freezing for sure because when you freeze before cooking the meat sticks with the ice and the meat sticks to the shell.
Cool video! I'm just now researching on how to catch and cook and clean crab. I'm glad I found this video. Can you tell me how long you cook after this process? Do you just throw it in a boiling pot of water? Shells and all? How long to cook it? Thanks a million for your help with this!
Thinking about crabbing soon, do you think with this method I could do this upon catching and then icing them until I get home in Tacoma? Would be a few hours and then cooking them right away.
FISHERMANS LIFE cleaned his crabs the same way , *the ice is a good tip thanks* Thay always take my bait, then jump off at the end *(I might as well start taking my SHARE/LIMIT)*
Great technique! I've never dealt with a live crab before but this gives me confidence to try. Quick question tho: when cooking these newly cleaned crabbies, do you boil them 7 mins. per pound or 15 mins. per pound? (I swear I heard you say 15 mins. total for your 2+ lb. whole crab in a previous video.) Thanks! I'm definitely following you!
ive been looking endlessly for RAW PACK crab for canning...this method of cleaning helps...the recipes from the 1940s are the hard catch...and are not considered safe by todays standards...
So I know they are toxic if they die and aren't cleaned. Did you freeze or boil these guys first? We are getting some crab next month and I don't want to throw them away like last time (our charter didn't inform us on correctly killing and cleaning).
These were alive and once I cleaned them I froze them. I’d advice to do this method then cook and freeze. If you freeze before cooking the meat will expand with freezing and stick to the shells
@@NWF18 so I just catch them, do your method, and freeze? How much time do I have after they're caught to clean them before they go toxic? Thanks for the advice!
