      The refill confusion is with the 5-speed in the Boxster.
      From the factory 986 Boxster service manual: "At 2.25 l, the oil level is 11 mm below the filler opening. Use a bent wire hook (shop-made) to check the level."
      From the factory 996 Carrera service manual: "Filling capacity: 2.7 l. Fill with oil up to the bottom edge of the oil filler opening."

      After making this video, the whole transmission mystery seemed much less daunting. In the future if a broken gearbox comes my way I would happily tear into it for the sake if education. The popping out of 2nd gear thing is certainly something out there, I personally have no experience of it. Maybe you could make a video showing the fix, it would probably be popular. QQ: do your Scotch Brite pads leave any whiskers behind? I need to clean off my oil sump plate housing, and am torn on what to use. Scotch Brite and brake cleaner are my current preference, but those dual yellow/green kitchen sponges seem to be less abrasive / leave less behind.

    Great video Finn, I really enjoyed watching it. I just changed transmission oil on my 996 c4, and accidently loosened a wrong bolt, on 15:48 , there is a bolt on the nose cone, on the right side of your left thumb. I first mistook this as a filling plug. Do you know what this bolts purpose is? Luckily the transmission shifts good afterwards, so hopefully no harm was done.

    I filled my transmission until it start to run out of the fill hole. Has worked well for 5k plus miles. I used Motul SAE 75W90.
    Out of curiosity was the magnetic in transmission already? Would be very cool if it is fitted in the factory.
    Thanks for the videos Finn and I love my T-Shirts.

    • @miketdavies
      @miketdavies 2 года назад +2

      I also filled mine to the level, and it's survived 2k miles of track driving so far. Anecdote != evidence though!
      The magnet should be there from factory, it catches the shavings that inevitably occur from the gear/synchro wear etc. Most transmissions have one or more.

    Hi Finn. Great video as always. I thing I’m missing something. What was your transmission issue to begin with? I mean what cause you to take that bad advise of removing that bolt, and made you go thru all this trouble?

    • @ManinaGarage
      @ManinaGarage  2 года назад

      Hello Meir, it started with the first Durametric episode when I drove to Stacy’s house, someone mentioned that my gear shift throw seemed long, which I mentioned, then I got a message about short shifters and “setting up” the shifter (I mentioned the long throw and what I thought was an issue getting into 2nd and an overly tough time getting into reverse) the advice was to remove the plug, put the car in reverse and then reinstall the plug. That was supposed to “reset” the endpoint of the transmission (reverse) which would then realign the other gears to improve the gearshift overall…… That seemed reasonable at the time. Thank you for watching 🤘😎

    unless i could see a convincing reason WHY that hole could not have been cast into the housing 11mm lower, and so conform with 100 years of transmission oil filler plug tradition, i would consider the 11mm hypothesis the musings of an obtuse, non-conformist.

    • @ManinaGarage

      As mentioned the instruction is in at least one porsche 996 repair manual with included full color diagrams.
