Amazing to see the tech improvements. But to also see how excellent of a ball striker tour level players are, even into their older years. Great video.
By far, it's one of the best episodes. There's nothing like a master of the game sharing their skills. If you notice that quick squat before his catapult. That's something to be noticed. Thank you for sharing your experience. That's one of your best days at work, I'm sure.😉
Went to a Korn Ferry Qualifier. Kid from Okla Univ shot -19 in 3 rounds 7200yds. The next round of Qualifying he shot -4 in 4 rounds, missed the cut. To be a PGA player you have to be a witch.
This is hands down the best 2nd Swing video that I have seen. Mark is super knowledgeable, he expresses himself so well and seems like a genuine and humble man.
This was awesome! Mark is a super guy and goes to show how much they knew about their swing and equipment. Hope you have him on more, or others like him. Would love to see him in person at your Dallas store.
Loved watching this as much as Drew. The little nuggets coming from Mark were a great insight into how to play good golf. Would love more videos like this.
Great interview!!! What knowledge. Most players of this day and age want longer and higher just like the modern irons produce. For a guy like me…Marks age group…I have struggled with modern irons. Recently went back to 1986 Wilson Staff blades and it’s like going home. Lower ball flight, no wild distances to deal with. I am now scoring well again. Crazy isn’t it.
There was a golf ball well before the paradigm shift in golf balls (Titleist Pro V1). It was the Spaulding Tour Edition. It was sold in the middle 1980’s, and it was basically a solid core ball as well. The primary user was Greg Norman and he would basically thin the irons shots on purpose to create gobs of spin. Cost him at least one major, the 1986 PGA Championship. Then later, the Strata replaced the Tour Edition. But of course when the Pro V1 because of the large volumes of tour players who played Titleist anyway, the rubber wound golf balls would become obsolete.
Titleist have ALWAYS been the best balls and always will be.......The only reason any tour pro has ever played any other ball is when they are getting PAID $$$ to play it.
just paused video for few minutes, outstanding video, such great content, love it, Thank you guys, my first set of clubs 5 years ago was the Ben Hogen Ft worth black I absolutely loved them when I learned how to hit a golf ball, took 6 months but awesome clubs very bladesh, the 4 iron never got in the bag it was a straight small piece of black metal lol.! years later I game Mizuno pro 225s totally opposite from first set lol !!Thanks again love to see more like this!!
Firstly great video.. what a player. Amazing to see his control with that Hogan, BUT question…there is 3 degrees of loft difference between those heads and the shaft on the Ping is probably lighter. Easily hit a club further?
Thanks for watching! Yes, 3 degrees difference and a lighter shaft. So the increased distance is expected. But the spin numbers and the height/landing angle are what impressed Mark the most. That's where the updates in club design and technology helped in this case
I used to list after the Hogan Apex irons. Never good enough to do them justice. Played Ping Eye 2 Copies! currently transitioning from MP20-MB’s to i230 irons. Very different “feel” but the forgiveness and consistency is impressive. Still get good results from some pretty poor strikes! Hoping they will help me shave the last few shots into cat A.
Great episode, but I'd like to see a little closer apples to apples with the Hogan Apex with the Nippon Pro 105. With the S400 at 132g you are certainly going to have a slower swing speed, lower launch and peak and less carry.
I came to this video in hopes of finding an answer to this question. I am a beginner golfer looking to buy my first set of clubs. I recently talked with my grandpa and he offered to give me his set of ping irons and callaway clubs from the 90s and I wondered whether a set of cheap modern clubs (looking at a nitro set from walmart) or an old set of callaways and ping would be a better
How many in a row could you hit like that? A lot. I watched him on the range Sunday night at 2001 us open. He went all the way through the bag. It was a line of golf balls a yard or two apart of dispersion all the way down the range distance wise, including the driver
@@2ndswing It would be helpful to know that data in order to show how that delta translates into height and distance differences. Perhaps that gets into proprietary data?
C'mon Drew. Just go ahead and accept it. It's time for you and the wifey to move to Texas. It won't take THAT long to learn how and when to say y'all. 🤣
More distance with the game improvement and more forgiving, but he had much more consistent strike with the old blades and more consistent start line with the old blades.
Ironicly I still play hogan 1999 5-p. If Langer can hit the 3 iron he is a way better golfer than me. My back up set is ping s 56. so this video really hit home with me.
I analyzed brooksies non verbal communication and speech patterns. I think that late at night, when no one is around, in his heart of hearts, he wishes he was playing the hogans
I will say that the PING doesn't sound good in this video, which echos my experience. It felt very firm, if not HARD in my testing. The feel alone kept me from going to an i230. (4.6 cap). This is different than the iBlades and the i230 which felt fine for being cast. The i230 do not feel fine.
I have ping clubs, and I actually play decent with it, but it has a 0% forgiveness😂😂,and fucks up my game, and I'm wanting to either get Titleist or Callaway.
You seem inexperienced at golf to be thinking that way. It isn't all about "distance". The newer, modern clubs are consistently hitting higher spin then the old clubs (thus giving more stopping power), and are hitting the ball a lot higher (even more stopping power to hold greens). And are overall a lot more forgiving for thin / fat shots and will get a lot more distance on mis-hits. So the difference in reality is a LOT more then just "5-10 yards of distance gain".
@@enzy6434 LOL are you serious? Did you not watch the video at all? The tour pro had hit most of his shots pretty consistently with pretty much the same spin and with a pretty tight dispersion. Not only that he was able to shape the shots to his liking for both models. My point is that the biggest differential between the two and 20+ years of innovation was the distance. Is that not true? And to be fair to the other guys point, the lofts definitely played a role in that so I guess 20+ years of innovation in the hands of someone who is a good ball striker is minimal to say the least. Higher MOI might play a factor if you aren't a good striker but as you can clearly see in this video, in the hands of someone actually good, it means little or nothing. This is the same reason why you don't see pros playing "super game improvement" clubs on tour. Oh but go ahead and make wild assumptions based on one line of comment.
Mark Brooks wasnt a player i liked, he was little grumpy old school player in his prime had to be to concentrate to compete against top players but very much appreciate his ball striking, shot maker as he wasn't a long player, he knew his game had great short game and good putter, off the course probably great guy

Real treat to have Mark Brooks on the channel. Really appreciate the playing information he generously offered.
Thanks for watching!!! We've got another one releasing today...stay tuned !
This is amazing. He’s calling the shot before he even hits it and is delivering you’ve got to be special to be on tour.

Great to see Mark Brooks and have him share a bit of his knowledge. I rooted for him back in the day, he was a grinder in the best sense of the word.
Absolutely!
This was worth it simply to hear Mark talk about the golf swing. Amazing!
I loved everything about this. Tour ball striking and shot making is next level.... no matter the generation the player comes from.
always loved Mark Brooks swing, super pure. Great video. I also played Hogan irons back in the late 80s.
Always enjoyed watching Mr. Brooks play. Nice to hear his comments.

Your best video ever, period!
Great stuff. I think Dynamic loft would also be a great number to have on screen.
There is no mention of the loft on the old vs. new? The new 7 iron is probably closer to his old 6 (or 5) iron loft.
from what I find:
Hogan apex plus 7i loft: 34*
ping i230 [standard loft]: 33*
Mark is amazing - he has the knowledge and ability of a true master - he talks about playing 25 years ago like it was yesterday
Firstly great video.. what a player. Amazing to see his control with that Hogan, BUT question…there is 3 degrees of loft difference between those heads and the shaft on the Ping is probably lighter. Easily hit a club further?

Interesting that Brooks was the last major winner before Tiger changed the game 7 months later. Great trivia question.

great video. did anyone notice that the club head speed was 3-4 mph faster with the newer club? why?
Thanks for watching! Weight of the shaft and overall weight of the new club is lighter

Way more insightful content than from RUclips pros showing off 300+ simulated yardage.
More distance with the game improvement and more forgiving, but he had much more consistent strike with the old blades and more consistent start line with the old blades.
This guy could get it around. Looks like he still can. Very underated player.
Very interesting video 👍🏼🇺🇸
Hook’em Mark!! NRH says howdy!!
also is it possible to have groves cleaned up or it not recommended
Would love just half his game!!
Mark needs to replace Chamblee on the Golf Channel asap 😆
I'm still using my Ping i3 from 2002. I have noticed guys that I was one club longer than are now even with me or a little longer

If his Apex 99 is stock the 7i is 36*, the Apex 6i would be 32,5* and closer to his new 7i at 33*
So good!
Fantastic a great player

It’s not the club. It’s you. Those i230s are super forgiving for what kind of player they are aimed for.
Huge sound difference between a true forged and a premium cast club head.
Still world class ball striker
Kinda crazy that over 20 yrs of innovation only results in a 10yd distance difference.
Not even that, the i230 is loft jacked, so its about as expected
