    The reason your CPU usage is higher after the upgrade is because the GPU is no longer a bottleneck. Essentially your CPU and GPU are passing operations back and forth - since your old GPU was maxxed out, it was taking its time to finish it's operations and the CPU was just sitting around waiting for the GPU to finish. Now that your GPU can keep up, they're both passing things back and forth without needing to wait for each other. Since neither one is close to 100% utilization, it just means that you have the capacity now to do more complex things until that overwhelms either the CPU or GPU (which you'll be able to tell based on which one is higher utilization).

      The CPU should be idling. If you have good hardware decoder and Nvidia GPU (for VFX), the CPU should barely have anything to do.
      I have a 13900HX in my laptop and thanks to quicksync (hardware encoder/decoder), the CPU stay at like 1.5ghz while playing back high quality 6K 10bit 4:2:2 files.

    I initially bought my 7900XTX for gaming. It's a beast for that, but I'm shifting its role to video production, specifically running DaVinci Resolve. Your CPU is working harder now because your GPU is able to ask for more. Previously, your 2070 didn't ask for the 3600X to do very much because it was too busy trying to process the little bit the 3600X was sending. As you've observed, the 7900XTX can process far more than the 3600X can send. Remember, 50% utilization of your CPU probably means that every core is engaged and you have very little in reserve. Your 7900XTX can handle more, but once you reach 50% CPU and ask for more, the utilization rate will climb fast. As I recommended in an early video comment, you should now upgrade your CPU to a 5900XT, 16 cores rather than your current six, and faster ones to boot.

    Professional programmer and gamer/hardware nerd here. You did well, Brother.
    As some have mentioned, the cpu feeding the gpu is correct. It's always a balance.
    I'll reiterate another comment as well, you can upgrade the cpu to more cores and probably more importantly, faster cores to feed the gpu as a next step if you find the need in the future.
    You did especially well getting that 1kw power supply which future proofs you for a long time.
    Couple key points. VRAM (video ram) on the GPU is probably one of the more impactful stats you are looking for in the future, up to limit of course. You went from 8 to 24, which is huge. I doubt we'll be seeing more on mid tier consumer cards any time soon.
    You can stay a couple of more release cycles behind on CPU than you can on GPU for the best bang for your buck.
    SSD size is largely the only relevant stat going forward, some are faster, but it'd be hard to notice the difference because they are all so fast now. They aren't going to wear out like hard drives did as much in the past, so don't worry. Obviously, you need a backup strategy, but thats a separate issue.
    I would look into building yourself a NAS, it can be done relatively cheap and it'll give you expandable redundant storage for your video files. It'd be a great project for you, and good content for your channel, I'm sure a great many of your viewers would benefit. If you need advice, feel free to contact me.

    I think the 24gb RAM is huge. The 8GB RAM was probably causing the 2070 GPU usage to be maxed out and it seems like the raw power of the GPU is nowhere near being tasked within Resolve. Also, I'm definitely not an expert, but I think CUDA and Open CL are just like the language of the GPU that developers have to use to code their programs to leverage the GPU (and Apple has Metal). So the fact that you can't tick the CUDA box doesn't mean that you're losing out necessarily as long as the developers at DaVinci are putting in the effort to maximize OpenCl and Metal, etc.

      @toastbrot97 2 дня назад +1

      Yeah, that was my guess also. You can literally see the VRAM being maxed out on all the tests he did. And ironically enough, on the RX 7900XTX the VRAM usage seems to only be around 10 gigs, so not even that far over the 8 gigs of the rtx 2070. But that's just the world of memory. It's never an issue until it's full, and then shit starts hitting the fan. If only Nvidia wasn't so stingy on VRAM. And you're pretty much right on the Open CL and Cuda side of things. Altho Cuda refers to both nvidias gpu cores as well as their software. Other than that, it's really just a different language as you said.

    There are some things Nvidia is downright better for because of the CUDA cores and how software is designed specifically to take advantage of them but if a software isn't designed specifically for Nvidia, AMD absolutely destroys Nvidia in price per performance and does not get the credit at all. I just built a new PC with a 9800X3D and a 7900XT (XTX was all sold out D:) and it handles absolutely anything without breaking a sweat. If you do plan on upgrading, I'd probably go with something like a 5800X or 5900X if you want to stick with AM4. The X3D Chips are designed specifically for gaming and fall behind in a lot of productivity tasks.

    CPU's with hyperthreading, like your 6 core 12 thread 3600X, will rarely report 100% usage, because half of the cores are fake. It also only shows the total, but many applications don't scale well over multiple cores so you can be bottlenecked by the CPU on 1 core and windows will still show 10% cpu load.
    Since it's showing peaks to 50% CPU load, you're definitely CPU limited, and upgrading the CPU will result in a noticeable improvement.
    Since your system is AM4 and we're at AM5 now, you need to replace the motherboard, cpu AND RAM. I'd recommend a 9600X - 9950X. Don't get the 3D chips, they'll perform worse and are more expensive.
    If you want to do a cheap upgrade, buy a 5950X and put it in your existing system. It should be compatible with your motherboard, and it is also MUCH faster than a 3600X.

    • @toastbrot97
      @toastbrot97 2 дня назад +3

      I was gonna comment that too. It's not that helpful to look at the full cpu utalization in the taskmanager on high core count cpus. It makes more sense to look at the usage of the individual cores.
      Altho the peaking at 50% supposidly showing a bottleneck is nonsense. For really the same reasons you just explained one sentence prior. You can see the cpu usage scale to over 60% at 7:52 in the video, so 50% couldn't possibly indicate a bottleneck just yet. Also as long as the software can make usage of multithreading, which most modern professional programs do, then the cpu usage will scale normally between physical cores and threads.
      The 5950x is a fantastic upgrade suggestion for the platform. I'm actually on the same CPU as casey, and i'm also considering getting the 5950x instead of upgrading to AM5. Considering that it's still fairly expensive in comparison i don't wanna do that just yet.

    • @jayzn1931

      Yes, you need to look at all cores, but what you say is completely wrong about the cores being fake and therefore 50% being the real 100%. Otherwise the performance wouldn't decrease if you disable SMT in the BIOS.

      @ It sounds like you just did that again. It might be possible sometimes that a CPU utilization below 90% still indicates a CPU bottleneck, but it is very unlikely. Only when Casey shows us the core utilizations and we can see for example 4 cores at 90-100% we can be sure about that. What you say can‘t be proven and therefore doesn’t make sense to me. The Nvidia GPU showed utilization in the "3D" section, while the Decode section interestingly was on 0%. For the AMD, the Decode section is not selected in Task manager, so it would be interesting if this time around that is used! But no major GPUs have HW acceleration for 4:2:2 H.265 content, so this is probably the reason the "3D" power was used.
    It's a bit weird though seeing so much better performance on the 7900XTX, as it is not like it's 4x+ the power of a 2070, so I wonder what exactly is causing the difference here.
    The bigger VRAM is gonna come into play of course.
    Also for the CPU, it would make sense to look at the individual cores, you can do that in Task Manager by right cliking on the graphic and changing it to logical processors.
    I was surprised anyway why you ordered an X3D CPU, had never heard they are good for video editing! For games they are great, sure, but they are usually slower than their non-X3D counterparts in producitivity apps, while being more expensive!
    Good to hear anwyway it's going a lot smoother now! I also am thinking about a GPU upgrade and the just announced 5070 only has 12GB still, so I going with a 7800XT is very interesting to me, but just like you, I would have to upgrade my power supply, which makes the change even more expensive, which I don't like. But I am only gaming on it atm so I am just gonna wait until prices get better.
    Oh and also, check your SSD with tools like CrystalDiskInfo or similar. You can actually predict the life span in % and look at individual factors whether it will die soon or not.
    Also, if an SSD has reached its total bytes written, it can still read so you can still access your files.

    Okay, first off, some advice. I would recommend upgrading your CPU soon. If its getting the job done, then by all means, ignore what I'm saying. But your CPU is no essentially not keeping up with your GPU. Your GPU is faster than your CPU is and thats creating, what we call a bottleneck in your system. Its a common misconception that having your GPU at 100% utilization is bad, which its not. That essentially means you're rendering to the maximum capability of your hardware. For a CPU however, since there is a constant stream of tasks to accomplish, having your CPU at 100% is really not great, because your system cannot keep up with the demands of whatever task you're trying to accomplish. It seems here that your CPU usage is still below 100%, but you could get even more performance if you were to do a minor upgrade, maybe to a Ryzen 5 5600x, it should be compatible with all your hardware and you wont need to buy a new PSU or anything, its a motherboard firmware upgrade and you swap it out and it should fix those CPU usage issues you were seeing, while still having your GPU free to do what it is doing.
    Side note, as an RTX 4090 user, you would not believe how many problems I've had with a(what cost me) $1600 graphics card. I've had countless errors with games that came down to buggy driver updates, my monitors do crazy shit that never happened before, like VRR not working properly, one of my display ports are at a lower bandwidth than the rest, not to mention that Nvidia decided to make a GPU that didn't conform to the latest display port standard, DP 2.1 (which the XTX does also btw), and the thing is so fucking big it comes loose in my motherboard every time I move the PC. I hope your GPU is not total garbage and all im saying is, when its time for me to upgrade, im not going with Nvidia again, thats for sure.

  • @technologyanimals
    @technologyanimals 2 дня назад +1

    It's probably due to the lack of specific encode/decode accelerators on your old card that the load was so high. Your new card has those, and the workload is sent to those accelerators and the rest of the GPU is essentially doing nothing at all.

    But golly is the company getting so anti consumer as of late. I rather spend my money on AMD and have slightly worse performance in Resolve than give another dime to Nvidia.
    Fantastic choice with the 7900 xtx
